  • This video/work was carried out 2 years ago (2016), so the camera, lighting, and narration is a little dull I'm afraid. However, that shouldn't detract from the BIGGEST Redish Motorsport Underside Restoration we've ever carried out.
It was a joy to work on such a stunning and rare model such as this Sapphire Black BMW M3 CSL, and even more so to work with the owner and transform this car into the remarkable condition that it deserved.
We went as far as extending our Underside Restoration to an 'engine-out' job to allow the proper access of the Front Chassis Legs and treat some of the very minor surface corrosion we found from near the AC Compressor and where the Lower Radiator Hose and also PAS Hoses had rubbed on the factory paint.
We spent a serious amount of time studying the original style and finish of the Sprayable Seam Sealer applications by the factory robots to make sure we could replicate this as best as possible.
We also hired a Sikkens Automatchic 3 tool to assess the spectrum range of the BMW Electrophoretic Coating applied to the Body In White (BIW) when it was a bare bodyshell on the production line.
We took multiple samples and came up with an average, and it's a match which is between the factory E-coat and factory Seam Sealer.
This was then used as our colour for the painting works underneath the vehicle once all the corrosion areas had been treated.
We even used Sapphire Black paint sparingly as a dust overspray coat in the wheel arches and battery tray and areas that would have been over-sprayed on the production line by the painting robots.
We did our very best to use every single nut and bolt and fixing and clip available from BMW that would be on show - and even replaced most items that wouldn't even be seen like Propshaft Bolts for example.
Also, all new plastic trays and plastic pieces were used underneath and make a big difference in our opinion.
Many of the original axle pieces of hardware were refurbished by media blasting, powder priming, powder colour coating, and clear coat lacquering them.
Then every single bush, ball-joint, and suspension component was changed for new genuine BMW parts as part of this total refresh.
It was all hand assembled lovingly by the team at Redish Motorsport in 2016.
We spent approx 200 labour hours on this job. The labour cost was very large.
The parts bill was just as large as this M3 CSL also had a new 3-piece exhaust system of CSL CATS, CSL Centre Section, CSL Rear Silencer.
The amazing 'no-expense-spared' Carbon Ceramic Brakes that feature in the video didn't quite fit as planned and went back to the manufacturer for alteration. It's still in the plan to fit the Carbon Ceramics one day so if that happens we'll make another video for it.
