The very basics ( high level) of how to use a shotgun for a beginner. As with all my videos, I recommend some hands on time at a range with a certified instructor to show you in person, but on a high level, these are the very basics of how to use a shotgun. I should also note because I forgot to mention it in the video, this is a 12 gauge shotgun and the ammo ( cartridges) and put into the tube with the brass piece towards the back, or Butt if the gun.
You should have said that when the slide is pumped after a shot is fired, that it should be done rapidly, and with some force. Doing it slowly like you did in the demonstration could cause the empty shell to not eject properly, or the next round to not chamber properly.
I know this video is old, but it was very helpful to me
Thanks for watching!
Thank you i just purchased my first shotgun. This was very helpful
Just getting into the firearm community finally feeling comfortable and confident with handguns now plan on moving onto shotguns then eventually rifles thank you for this video it was very helpful
Super helpful, I really appreciate the time you took for this. I just purchased my first pump shotgun and wanted to make sure I was good to go before I head to the range. Much appreciated for us shotgun beginners. I always learn something when I watch UA-cam and you did not disappoint
Thank you. Very detailed. Been 25 years since i loaded and shot a gun . With world events like you said , i went to walmart and purchased a 12 guage mossberg. My 1st gun was a remington 870 express shotgun. Nice to brush up my knowledge and will be checking out more of your videos. From Roanoke,Va.
Happy to help! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Yes! Thanks I learned how to use my shotgun and I feel more confident with it. 🙏🏼
Thank you so much for these videos! I watch these to impress my Texan boyfriend who is into guns (I’m Dutch myself) so I don’t look like a total noob when he takes me out shooting for the first time. It’s really nice to know how to handle these guns safely since it’s scary for me. Once again, thank you for the easy explanation!
My husband past away and his shot gun was left loaded with a round in the chamber. I watched this video in hopes of learning how to unload it. I thought it was unloaded ! Thank you for this video. You make it look so simple to unload the gun. Unfortunately I'm still to afraid to try it. I'm a senior citizen. I do wish instructions like yourself. Would let gun owners know that they need to make sure to teach their families how to unarm the weapon. In case something happens to them. I just put the gun away and will ask a police officer to come to my home and unload it for me. So that I can sell it. I don't want to take it out of my house with a round in the chamber. In my husband's defence he had brain cancer before his death so I hid his gun from him. I still can't believe he kept a round in the chamber like that !!
Thank you for this "Basic Overview", it was very informative, so maybe not to basic!
Thx you, I just brought one, and I loaded a round knowing I had to cock it bk to unload it, but wasn't sure about the lil tab on the bottom. You doing this video really helped. I appreciate u taking the time to show beginners to the shotgun world.
Late to the party, but I just purchased my first shotgun! Very excited to take it to the range. Thanks for this helpful video!
Very very helpful. Thank you. If anyone wants to criticize your video, those are the ones that will make a deadly mistake. Fundamentals fundamentals fundamentals
Just bought a remington 870. Thanks for the video. Was a great help
Thank you so much. I recently built a new Timber Frame home in the mountains, and I wenr and purchased a Remington 20gauge pump shotgun for home protection. Your video was a perfect refresher course on how to load and unload. Thank you so much!! 😊
Thanks! I'm taking a class on shotguns next month, so appreciate the primer. I have shot before with my brothers, but it's been a long time. I bought a WInchesterSXP
Guys, the Mossberg Maverick 88 is an excellent shotgun, I live in bear territory, and let me tell you, the maverick 88 it's flawless, and the price is half than those fancy and expensive ones, I paid in my local store for a brand new Maverick 88 12 gauge shotgun ONLY $190. Greetings from Anchorage Alaska USA.
Great video. First time shotgun owner. This helped a lot.
Thanks for the video you know after 20 years in law enforcement and seeing many different things what stuck in my mind and what I thought I would bring to your attention is that that live ammunition should be nowhere near what you're doing to begin with especially when you're teaching beginners
Thanks sir. This is just the basic type of video needed. All this is new to me. Happy new year. Be safe.
Happy new year!
Thank you! Have run pistols for awhile. But just bought a tactical shotgun today on sale. This was helpful.
Very informative vid. Thank you.

I've always been more of a handgun guy, but I just bought my first shottie, very informative video. Thanks.
Ok first off dude, who uses the wussy term "shottie"? You might wanna give social media a pause.
@@PeterGoesINya you sound mad gay.

Shotty is a slang word for Shotgun. chill... Relax!!
white men say "Tranny" short for Transmission
Just got my ata etro shotgun , never though of using fake rounds , to practice loading it , thanks man very cool video and very informative
Pretty solid stuff man, I recently purchased my first firearm (Mossberg 88) and am waiting to pick it up in the shop when it arrives. I tested it out in the range along with the 500 to make my decision. You mention a lot of the stuff the RSO did during my test firing of these guys, solid vid for beginners!
Thanks for watching and glad it was helpful! Check out some of my other videos, which you might find useful as well.
Not bad instruction! Keep this stuff up.

Excellent. Thank you. We subscribed
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks for this video.. beautifull shotgun, Nice weapon..
Very helpful and easy to understand.
Glad it was helpful!
I've watched a bunch of these videos and you explained it the best. Informative, clear, easy to follow. Friendly suggestion - you've gotta work on the camera skills (I know it's not easy since you said you're a one-man show). Angle it up so the gun is center, get closer if you can, maybe use a different surface. I bet you'll get more views and reach more people that way
Very helpful video!
I learned so much for my self defence.
Thanks so much.
Very welcome
Very insightful
Thanks so much. I needed this info.
Glad it was helpful!
Very helpful, Thank you !

Glad you enjoyed it!

Thank you. I bought a Churchill shotgun without a manual. Getting ready to get training but wanted to get some foresight into shotguns.

Thanks I don't own one but it help to gain the basic knowledge if I ever stumble across one 👍
Ya get one yet
Almost looks like my savage stevens. Thanks!
Love from India🇮🇳🇮🇳
This is super helpful! I needed this as I’m a new shotgun owner. I’ve fired it already but had a terrible experience at the range when I first bought the gun. It jammed on me twice! I’ve been nervous about using it since then, but this has really restored much of my confidence! I’m now subscribed.
Could you create a video displaying the differences between .22, .380, and 9 mm handguns?
hows the kick back was it scary i never shot one
Happy to help!
What if the slide jams, how do you get it un jammed?
Can I store my shotgun loaded for long term without damage
@@m.e.9974 as long as you keep your shotgun in a clean, dry, and uncluttered space, storing it loaded shouldn't cause damage
Thanks!
Welcome!
Thanks.
I agree.....unloaded is safe and always best!!!!
Thank you
Thanks alot!!!
You're welcome!
If you load and unload indoors... do it in the room with the oldest carpet.
Thanks for watching!
Thx for my intro to shotgun
I have an Ithaca model 51 slug gun you cant load until you push a lever right before the loading gate, it is a pain but it only holds two rounds in the tube.
thank You for video .doYou have experience with stevens savage shotgun?
Solid
Oh I just got my first shotgun it’s and SDS Pump Action 12 gauge
Could you do video on how to clean it?
Good instructional video on the basics QQ WHAT DO YOU I MEAN YOU DO IF YOU HAVE AN INTRUDER SINCE YOUR gun is Empty I have mine loaded But not Chamber and Safty on ???
Thanks for the information. The information was great. But, it would have benefited me as a new shotgun owner, if the video showed the gun and not the table. I was really interested in the chambering and removal of a chambered shell.
Stupid question, just bought One. Can you accidentally load the shells backwards? And is it always loaded the same on most pumps ? (Bought a Radikal tactical pump-12 gauge
No, impossible because of the metal (brass) at the base has a small flange; it can't go into the 'hole' where the shells go.
You should be able to empty the tube as well....... without cycling through a loaded chamber.
what's the best option for a beginner, for a firearm
I'm thinking about buying a shotgun
I just order me some fake ammo of seeing this video. Good Video
4 live rounds. 5 blanks.
Thanks for watching!
I have my grandads shot gun. It has to be 100 years old, my question is with a shotgun that old would the carriage release be in the same place?
Slide releases are in different places on different guns, but they will always be near the trigger guard.
Whats the name of the ammo holster
My husband passed in June I've never used a gun let alone a shotgun can you help with instructions on older gun I have round in the chamber are the bullets orange
Orange “might” be a training round but don’t count on it - better safe than sorry and assume it’s live. I’m sorry for your loss btw.
What do think about a twenty ga female gun or not.
What if the shotgun is missing the loading flap?
Not all of them come with one.
Model and the name of the company of this particular shotgun.
Remington 870. Thanks for watching!
@@DuncanMeter Thanks
Buy dummy ammo and dry handle at home
Thanks for watching!
You only mentioned one way to unload. What is the other way?
So the dummy shells don't actually shoot out the shotgun? Wow I'm a dummy
Thanks for watching!
I'm a 51 year old woman and bought a 20 gauge shotgun for home protection and found I have a hard time racking it. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
Hm... is it a pump? I mean honestly best thing to do without someone there to assist you is read the manual, if you mean the forearm on a pump there's using something called the action release and it'll be somewhere near the trigger guard you push it down and then you can move the forearm (thus revealing the chamber) as necessary.... of course following all safety rules such as keeping the muzzle pointed in a safe direction and making sure the gun is unloaded.
@@666Lachrimae666 Ty I found the action release so I'm able to rack it now. My Instructor in Shooters World did not show this to me or tell me there is one. No wonder I was having such a hard time racking it.
@@jenniferjones4249 You're welcome, i'm glad you figured it out ^.\\ Yeah it locks shut once you close the chamber but that's why the action release is there so that if you have a shell in the chamber you can unload it without having to you know.. fire it off to be able to move the forearm again xD A safer way than that though is at the bottom (if it feeds in the magazine tube through the bottom, I think all pumps do) where you would load rounds into the magazine tube you push up that bottom piece up and there's a little bar on the side there that you can push in when you push that in It releases the shell from the magazine tube then you just have to pull the forearm back (with the help of the action release) to eject the shell completely... that's safer than completely chambering and unchambering a shell.
I recently bought my first shotgun so i'm learning as well xD
Bhh
Next time, angle the camera better.
Always keep it loaded, period.
The camera work was bad. The demonstration was at the top kind of cut off and couldn't see and was not close enough. Couldn't really make out what you were doing.
You either failed to mention what to do if my pump action is stuck to the front making it impossible to see into the chamber....or I have the biggest piece of shit shotgun on the planet.
Thank you
Thanks for watching!
