  • When football owners get involved in football decisions, things can usually get very weird. And in 1985 with the Philadelphia Eagles, that's exactly what happened, when Eagles owner Norman Braman cut a player while on vacation... without telling the head coach about it

The only good thing Norman Braman did was keep the Eagles in Philadelphia. He’s the reason the Eagles didn’t really try to keep Reggie White. Buddy Ryan frequently referred to Braman as “the guy in France.” Mike Quick got a golf bag when he retired. No clubs-just the bag!!

Braman was a lousy owner of the eagles 🦅-his logic in cutting the backup quarterback from the roster made no sense! The coach had a right to be p****d about it!! 😢😢🏈💥😟😟😟

Braman's biggest crime was not being willing to pay Reggie White. I'm not an Eagles fan, but Reggie was worth far more to the Eagles than any amount of money and it was all downhill for Philly from there until they hired Andy Reid. Do I think the Minister of Defense would have won a Super Bowl in Philly? No, and I'm glad he got out of there and got a ring, but this was a huge mistake on the part of the Eagles front office.
Braman wasted Randall Cunningham, too. He was Michael Vick before Michael Vick.

@@andrewpadaetz5549 He never worked in football again period and he never talked about the play either, so we never really know what Bob Gibson's (that's the coach's name, NTW) thoughts were looking back when he made the call for that play. Oh, and if you're wondering what exactly he was doing between 1968 and 1974 as his Wikipedia page doesn't list those years, he was actually an offensive backs coach for the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL (I had to go to Pro Football Reference to find that out).

The one thing I’ll say in Braman’s defense is the NFL reduced roster sizes from 49 to 45 in 1985. HST, the execution was horrible.

This is not how to handle a player cut. Why Braman thought going behind Marion Campbell's back was a good idea is a mystery to me. Braman being on vacation in France didn't help matters. The Eagles could've easily kept Pisarcik as part of a 3-man QB room.

Braman and Wolman two of the worst Eagles owners. Kinda tough to tell who is worse cause Wolman was the one who gave incompent coach Joe Kulharich a 15 yr contract and Braman cheaped out of what could had been an Eagles dynasty not resigning the likes of Reggie White, Seth Joyner.

I think one big factor was that Campbell was a coach that Braman inherited from the previous owner (Tose), not a guy that he himself picked, so he didn't feel nearly as invested in Campbell's future. Long term, it probably would have been better for Randall Cunningham's development if he'd sat most of '85 behind Pisarcik, rather than starting early and developing a number of bad habits that Buddy Ryan just encouraged - not going through all his progressions, etc. On the other hand, Campbell definitely had pressure to win sooner rather than later - again, inherited rather than chosen coach - and the team that Vermeil had left him was old and not that good by the time "Swamp Fox" took over in '83...Pisarcik simply wasn't going to get them over that hump into the playoffs (see his '84 performances), while Randall had the raw potential for greatness. So, while the way it was done was completely unacceptable, the decision itself wasn't necessarily a objectively wrong one.
I'd also add that Braman's view that personnel was a collaboration between coach and owner would cause increasing friction into the Buddy Ryan era - Braman thought that's what he was getting, a shared system, while Buddy had a very different view. That's part of where the "Guy In France" stereotype for Braman came from - Buddy, for all his shortcomings as a head coach, knew very well how to work the media from his time as DC with the Jets then Bears, while Braman both was still learning and in some cases just didn't seem to care how he was perceived.

As a Canadian and CFL fan of a certain age when the subject of Joe Pisarcik comes up, I always wonder how he ever made it to the NFL. Undrafted, then plays three years in the CFL where his numbers aren't terrible (except maybe for 2 TD passes to 9 picks in 1976) but aren't particularly noteworthy. (Google cflapedia and his name if you want to see for yourself.)
His teams went 6-10, 6-10 and 2-12-2 in his CFL years, so it's not like he led teams to better success than his personal numbers would lead you to expect.
There is a lengthy list of QBs who put up far better CFL numbers, went to the NFL and never did anything but hold clipboards there. Pisarcik went from CFL also-ran to NFL starter over the course of about ten months. How does that make sense?
