      @@Ted_Sheckleri don’t think it’s more so about “stumbling into fame” but rather how green people that want to do stuff publicly are in not realizing that fame, no privacy, and hate all come with the package. Watching his videos back in the day he seemed a chill dude, def pretty awkward or on the spectrum, but I’m not arguing whether to give sympathy about it or not. If people stop being interested in your stuff you can take it personally, but its not any of our faults or responsibilities.

    When debt was mentioned right after with living in LA, I now realize why he seemed so bummed. I'd be depressed too if I paid the amount of RENT for studio apartments for a year for the same amount that someone in a small town 20 miles outside Pittsburgh BUYS A WHOLE HOUSE for lol.
    He could've lived in my area for probably 20% of the cost of living of living in LA, and that $200k/year from youtube would've been money in the bank after the first year (first year income buys the house and land)
    He could've done all the same pranks too, there's tons of college on the east coast, sure our weather isn't as nice but that few months of snow/ice can be fun, especially if you find a nice empty parking lot.
    It just seems like Cali is just sucking the life out of people (as we can tell by the growing homeless population.)
    If you're thinking about getting outta that state, think about coming to mine, the grass IS greener on the other side: we have medical Marijuana (easy to get) and firearm ownership is encouraged if you live in an area that doesn't have a police department

    I think he would do great working in producing media rather than making himself the focus of the media. Like if he was a writer for a show, or if he had a minor role on one. You can tell that he's tired of being in the limelight, and he's simply not made to be the brains of a business (no offense). His strengths are his creativity and his sense of humor, and he should play into them. Being self-employed clearly does not work for him, and the fact that he got a job at Amazon seems like a cry for help. That he desperately needs a regular schedule to keep him grounded while he grinds for his career. And this hasn't changed ever since he started vlogging.
    I think the Casey Neistat comparison that you made is very good. Casey's vlogs were so interesting because he did 1000 things in a day and the vlog was a summary of his day. He was running multiple businesses, was very committed to his hobbies, which made the vlogs extremely fascinating. He didn't have to work in order to make the vlogs interesting, he had to keep working and the vlogs showcasing his routine were in turn interesting. Compare this to Andrew's vlogs, where he mostly sat around his house and talked about his life. Instead of doing something cool and filming it, it felt like he was just going through the motions and expected something interesting to happen out of the blue. Ironically very similar to the main character at the start of Fight Club.

    • @helloweeny
      @helloweeny 2 роки тому +4

      Take it you aren't an OG fan of Andrews, his vlog content with Cherdleys is some of the best content on UA-cam ever created. It had a raw honesty even then that was brilliant, and it felt like you really understood Andrew and were rooting for him. I still feel like that about his new content, which no one else is really able to do.
      I'm not sure I get the Casey comparison, feels very apples and oranges. I watched all of Casey's stuff too but... It just got a bit boring and formulaic. He'd fly around to a talk on the otherside of the world, come back go on a run in New York and then eventually talk about something actually very inconsequential. It felt like travel porn but at the end of the day what did you actually learn about Casey and his personality? To me very little, whereas Andrew doesn't do all the filler of traveling around the world and just talks to you and gives you his personality, which is that of a funny guy with insecurities like the rest of us.

    • @mileezy

      As a fan of his stuff, I disagree with the last part. He has more self-awareness than 99% of UA-camrs and is actually honest on camera about the pitfalls of (post)-UA-cam fame and life in general, which isn't always the movie-like facade most vloggers portray. I actually find him and his content way more relatable for that reason.

    • @WSBWallstreetBets
      @WSBWallstreetBets 2 роки тому +5

      @@mileezy Being honest about your pitfalls and dissing yourself is a way of trying to signal self-awareness - but is actually the opposite. • @mileezy
      @mileezy 2 роки тому +4

      @@WSBWallstreetBets I don't think the two are mutually exclusive - I'm assuming you don't watch his content but it's assuredly not a character. He's making content, yes, the only difference is in that content he talks about his struggles to figure out what to do

By going back to a “normal” job this man has grown in wisdom and understanding of what’s truly important in the world and life

    As a fan of Andrew's I guess I'm in the minority who really appreciates the openness he displays on his channel. Success is a double-edged sword and the fact that he doesn't hide who he is on-camera is something almost no other UA-camrs seem willing to do these days. In a culture where fakeness and appearances are rewarded more than ever it makes sense to me that a channel like Andrew's is getting low views, but I'll take one genuine creator I can actually relate to over 10 curated vlog-squadders any day

      @@ilovedagreenday I agree... while I think Patrick did a good job covering the story beats some of the narrative seemed a bit disingenuous. The clips he chose to make Andrew seem 'crazy' / like he went off the deep end felt really biased, Andrew was 100% just fucking around in those

    Andrew Hales is a legend. I looked up to him in college and would DM him with no replies back. He inspired me to me making my own pranks. A few years ago, he ended up replying to me and we caught a skate sesh in Venice beach. He beat me in s.k.a.t.e (what h.o.r.s.e in basketball is to skateboarding). Andrew Hales will always be a legend in my eyes. At the time, I was working with my friend’s podcast that has 145k subs on UA-cam and I really appreciated that Andrew took the time to hangout and skate with me. Godspeed Andrew.

    I don’t like the way you Talk about Andrew in this. It feels like a celebrity gossip article played off as “concerned, mini documentary”. Idk man. I think you can do better. This almost feels like you’re just taking advantage of his situation (which I don’t think is as bad you lead to believe in this).
    I’ve watched a lot of your other videos and enjoyed them, but this one I’m not a fan of. Felt like you were using some of Andrews struggles as a cheap form of content. The whole video could’ve just been talking about his successful UA-cam career and that would’ve been interesting enough. Honestly makes me consider if I want to watch your videos anymore.

If he could motivate himself to create more solid and persistent content he’d be a riot again. Andrew has so much comedic talent and potential. I don’t think any other UA-camr cracks me up as much as him. He’s like the perfect dichotomy of monotone yet absurd humour.

    It sounds like he's trying to commit to himself and figure out how shit works there too and his content seems to be reflecting that. that comes first before committing to 'consistent themed content' or w/e for a fanbase, really hard to have the one first before the other, especially when youre at a tough point. 'Fanbase starting to lose hope in him'? health > views.

    Society has hardcoded young people into believing you _need_ to be online, doing a social media job, doing the kind of work hustle we all secretly mock, but honestly, some people just aren't cut for it and that's fine. The introverts, the "jack of all trades, master of none" people, the mentally ill, the late starters etc. The Twitch streamers and the Pewdiepies of this world are an anomaly, not a rule. Thing is, us young people have nothing else going for us out there, it's either an online job or nothing. People like Andrew do it out of desperation, not a choice and it shows. Doing something you don't like, even if it sounds as physically easy as pressing Rec in your bedroom and talk, is very taxing on one's psyche.

      key word is "can." You can have terrible production, but not terrible content. Most people who are percieved to have simple or basic content (lack of editing) usually make up for that with a great personality or comedy (critikal is the best example).

    I feel like I see myself in Andrew and is why, although the pull is alluring, why I've never followed through on building a social media brand. I have the desire but not the work ethic. Or the necessary machismo. I know I'd be able to build an audience but I know I'd be in my head too much over what I know is quality and what my followers would want. Plus, I also suffer from depression and confidence. I'm inconsistent & don't really stick to the same thing too long. I have an accidental career, but I only see it as a job that I've had because it works for me and isn't too tough. Geez.
    I was never a fan of the prank genre so I this might be the first time I've become aware of Andrew but I can 100% understand how his fans are rooting for him.

    I'm not really familiar with this guy, I think I've seen one or two of his videos but I'm not sure. But I can sympathize with the picture of him that's painted in this video. I'm not a youtuber or have social media fame or anything, but I am currently struggling with the idea of getting so far down a career path and just not wanting to do it. I got most of the way through a PhD before dropping out and planning to do something else. After a year I fell back on my degree and just got a job doing that. But I hated it and recently quit. And I don't plan on going back. Right now I am working, coincidentally, at an Amazon warehouse and doing food deliveries. People don't understand when the things you're good at and what brings in the money doesn't line up with what makes you happy. They think that you should just suck it up and just do the thing that you were successful in, in fact you've been telling yourself the same thing for so long. But you just can't do it, you don't want to do it, no amount of praise or money can make you do it, nor can any amount of ire and financial punishment. At the end of the day you just feel like there's nothing out there for you, you were a failure at the one thing that everybody wanted from you and it's 100% your own fault for your stubbornness. So you decide to just burrow into your own little hole, do the bare minimum to get by in society while losing as little of your energy as possible, and focus everything else that's left on trying to figure out what you're going to do with your life.

    This.. i understand a bit of his thought process going from doing what he loves to thinking the all he is qualified to do is an Amazon warehouse job. Because i'm going through the same. Obviously i'm not a youtuber, no, i'm an animator and digital artist. i used to work in a studio, loved that job but couldn't keep up with the horrid working conditions. i thought many times that i'll make and upload Sims4 creator content and maybe get a patreon going, but i've always lacked the will, like... i don't feel like i'd get it easy. So the only way i think i can get a job is if i did any low wage job like customer support, etc. Then the quarantine hit me hard, mentally. i lost me job (minor accounts assistant) and i just... have lost it... want to just be a freelancer like those big artists, but no one likes my works... so yeah, i get his situation. i truly hope he comes on top of it.
