  • As of November 2019, Harley-Davidson made it possible to upgrade your older system to the new 2019 Boom Box GTS on those 2014-2018 touring models. Visiting Harley's website, it seems they are marketing and describing this conversion kit more towards upgrading from the smaller 4.3 non-touchscreen unit to the new GTS unit, but you can upgrade from either the smaller 4.3 unit or the larger 6.5 GT unit. We tell you and show you everything you need to know if you're considering this upgrade. No need to pay a dealership to do this. We've got your back.

    Thanks Ryan. Just did this to my 2017 RGS. I'm very happy with the new Boom GTS since it is fully integrated. It is a little pricey but still cheaper than a new bike. Oh also to replace the switch cap, I only removed the two T25 screws on the switch cover and not the perch bolts.

    If you buy the GTS radio from the HD catalog, (brand new) you don’t need the harness from SoundZ customs, but if you buy the 2019-2020 radio used, meaning taken out of a bike, you will need that harness to work in a 14-18 bike.

    Well sir, I finally got my GTS unit. I spent about a year deciding. In the meantime I watched this video repeatedly. “Pulled the trigger”. An amazing video here. It is very informative. The install went smoothly and quickly. The flash of the radio didn’t go so smoothly. It ended up with DAB, buttons switched on the hand controls, no WHIM or CB enabled. The Harley tech was really nice and we worked through the flash (actually using your paid video on the GTS). The only bummer was that Apple CarPlay work without a helmet prior to flash. The tech installed a firmware update while flashing the radio. According to them (after the fact) Apple CarPlay will only work now with a microphone connected (wireless or wire).

      @sboy1955 4 роки тому

      Yep, If I absolutely had to have the new GTS, thats steep enough to justify trading the bike, ha!
      But in all fairness, when I was looking to upgrade my SYNC system on my F150 (basically same technology), it was quite a bit more. Also, the Sony aftermarket systems being used on HDs are pretty pricey too and they aren't 100% compatible.

    • @jam471975
      @jam471975 4 роки тому +1

      @@sboy1955 The Sony aftermarket systems for HD are pricey too? A complete Plug and Play kit for the XAV-AX5000 is $400 and XAV-AX7000 is $600... how is that pricey, at least compared to the $1,800 HD wants to the GTS? I'm not sure if you have priced out aftermarket double DIN systems in general with AA and CarPlay but $400 is pretty close to the low end of the price range, with name brands at least.
      Here are some Sony kits... fatheadcycles.com/collections/harley-davidson-audio
      But you are right about loosing functionality with the Sony systems... the big one is not being able to navigate the system with the right handlebar joystick, instead the right joystick just mimics what the left does. I would have put the XAV-AX7000 system in my 18 RGS by now if it wasn't for this limitation.

    • @RyanUrlacher
      @RyanUrlacher  4 роки тому +1

      The cons of the Sony XAV-AX 7000 Harley Boom Box Replacement:
      The Sony XAV-AX7000 is not a marine-grade like the Boom Box system is. So, you'd need to be careful if riding in heavy rains and when washing your Harley. Additionally, you won't see your EITMS on/off-screen or oil pressure like on the Boom Box. You'll also only get limited functionality with the use of your control toggles.
      The XAV-AX7000 has a microphone included with a wire that you normally route inside a quiet car. Using this microphone for voice commands or phone calls with the wind and noise would be less than practical on a motorcycle.
      The XAV-AX7000 only has a handsfree profile "HFP" and not a headset profile "HSP". That means you cannot pair a wireless Bluetooth headset directly with the unit, but you can pair your smartphone with it because of the HFP profile. This is similar to the Boom Box system but you can add the additional wireless headset interface module "WHIM" to get the HSP profile. There is no ad-on for the Sony unit to get the HSP profile.
      So, you'll need to pair your wireless Bluetooth headset directly with your smartphone and then have your smartphone plugged in via the USB port to use Apple Car Play or Android Auto. You can then give commands to your phone which will then bring things up on the Sony unit.
      Further, because the unit lacks the HSP profile, you'll lose your Harley intercom functionality and it's not CB radio compatible.
      Remember, that the Sony XAV7000 unit was made for a car and that's why you need to buy a kit or bundle of things to make this conversion possible. There are companies around that sell the bundle.
      Obviously, the Sony XAV-AX7000 is a much cheaper option than the Boom Box GTS if you don't care about the above-mentioned items and limitations.

    • @sboy1955
      @sboy1955 4 роки тому

      Jeff Martinson - Yep, they are less but it's hard to compare dollars because in terms of functionality they aren't comparable (e.g., switch gear, weather proofing, comm, navigation?). Ryan brings out some comparison points above and this video on the GTS install shows this is an easy swap requiring nothing but the unit.

    • @jam471975
      @jam471975 4 роки тому

      @@sboy1955 I just would have not used the word pricey in your original post then, I would have used the word value instead.
      Because for some people who do not use a lot of these functions that you lose they see a lot of value in the Sony. A lot of people don't use a WHIM and I know people who rarely use handlebar controls. And then there's people who value sound quality Above All Else and the Sony beats the GTS in this area.
      But for you, and for me too, losing this much functionality to save that much money doesn't provide a lot of value.

    Buddy had his 6.5GT swapped for a GTS. Independent shop did the swap and claimed that the SiriusXM module from his old 6.5GT wouldn't work in the GTS. After watching this and looking around the Internet forums and learning that it should indeed work we pulled the card out of his old 6.5GT and installed it in the new GTS. So far the GTS hasn't recognized the card. I know when we installed the cards in several of our 6.5GT's over the years a flash was not required. Does the GTS need to be flashed to get the SiriusXM card up and running? Our dealer here in Omaha, NE refuses to flash the GTS to activate the "old" SiriusXM module claiming that since the MC says it requires the new part number that must be gospel.

    2 comments,
    First you absolutely need the new usb cable. The new cable has a larger wire guage in order to support the needed 2.1A required for Carplay and android auto. Without the new cable you will have instability issues.
    Second, the SXM module has been updated to a new part number from Sirius. While yes the audio will function, the module is not officially supported.

    a few corrections... the USB cable is required... if you don't replace it, Android Auto will not function. The part number given is not found in the retail catalog - it is the part number for the stock cable on 19-20 bikes. Also, the XM needs to be changed as well. Electrically it may work - but the gts radios are coming from the factory with different part numbers, so i would assume there is SOMETHING different...

    Ryan Urlacher This is so timely. If I don’t care about the oil pressure and EITMS system (I can access those with my V&H FP3 if needed), would you recommend the Sony 7000? I don’t ride in the rain much but there are times where it could happen. Does the Sony have any protection at all? I do occasionally wash my bike but always try to use a little water as possible. I don’t want to get the Sony and kill it the first time I ride in a quick rain storm or splash it from the hose while washing. Any thoughts on real risk here?

      @RyanUrlacher  4 роки тому +2

    @Ryan Urlacher I have been going looking at the Sony XAV systems for awhile now to upgrade my 18 RGS, mainly because maps on my GT suck and I would really like to have Android Auto. But I have yet to do it because of loosing some of the handlebar joystick functionality for navigating the UI... on the RGS this is kind of a big deal for me because the screen is further away to reach so I primarily use the handle bar controls instead of the touch screen.
    But now that HD has made the GTS compatible with my bike and Android Auto is coming soon I'm trying to figure out what is the better route now. The 2 issues with the GTS is cost and audio performance... $1,800 is just a crazy amount of money just for a head unit... and the people that have installed the XVA-AX7000 say the Sony sounds way better than factory and is way easier to tune the sound.
    Ryan if you happen to know someone with the Sony XVA-AX7000 it would be great to see a comparison between the Sony and the new GTS unit. Pros and cons of both.
    Edit: I just seen your response to Sir KingaLing
    about this, lots of good info there... it would still be great to see you make a video on this since I'm sure there are a lot of people considering these two options especially because of the cost between the two.

Thank you so much for letting me know that I did NOT have to buy a new Sirius radio for the GTS. Saved me a ton of money! The install was a piece of cake when I followed your video. All I had to do was to take it to the stealership to have it flashed. You do have to make sure the dealer flashes EVERYTHING with the radio; Nav, Sirius, GPS, CB, WHIM, and anything else you may have connected to your bike relating to sound. To give them credit though, my dealer did the flash for FREE!

    I have a 2016 Road Glide that has the boom II system I upgraded to the GTS radio after the install I get no sound or beep coming from the speakers, went to the dealer to get it flashed they can’t figure it out. Put the GT back everything works fine. Any Ideas on what would cause this problem.

      Did the dealership select the correct amp setup when flashing your bike? Did you buy a new in box head unit or one out of another bike?

      D Barnes brand new from Harley and I installed it. Dealer said he was only reading one amp. At first they told me my amp (s) were fried , then went with you need to replace the boom II harness. I told them that nothing was wrong with either of those and I re-installed the GT radio. Everything on the GTS radio at startup seemed to work, including Bluetooth and apple carplay, dealer flashed for the Nav but nothing else and still no sound.

      My name is Frank, so the latest on my GTS install is that the dealer took back the radio and is exchanging it for another. Harley Tech support claims the radio is fine when they hooked up remotely, but they now want me to bring the bike in with the Installed GT radio which works fine so they can figure out why it won’t work with the new GTS radio installed.

    You recommend this or the Sony 7000?

    • @RyanUrlacher
      @RyanUrlacher  4 роки тому +5

      Sam, I just purchased a 6.5 and am going to upgrade from my 4.3 GTS. I see you used the same USB cable which is great to hear (I plan on doing the same). Did you have any issues with the GPS wire and did you have to have your unit "flashed" at a dealership after you installed it? Any information would be much appreciated! Thank you!

      @@matthewdilorenzo6070 if you are buying the unit brand new you will have to have it flashed at the dealer the dealer will download the maps to it.
      I had no issues with the GPS antenna that comes with the you buy.
      I believe the video mentioned that the radio will make a dinging sound until you have it flashed.
      That is 100% correct with going from the 4.3 to the six point 5 radio my unit dinged until I had it flashed but you will not have no Maps until you take it to the dealer if you bought the unit brand new.
      I am mechanically inclined. I had no trouble installing the radio it took me less than a hour. Street Glide you unhook the speedometer odometer all that you'll have some codes you'll have to clear but it's easy just follow directions.
      Even if you don't clear the code that don't stop the bike from going or anyting.
      You're not think of anything else to add on talking text on my phone if you have any questions hit me up there's any typos or weirdness it's from talking text and I'm probably getting a little quick.
