  • Plant-Based vs Regenerative Meat | COP28 Debate
This conversation is from COP28, when PBN Founder Klaus Mitchell (on the side of plant-based) spoke to Seth J Itzkan from SOIL4CLIMATE (on the side of regenerative meat) about why industrialised animal farming is destructive from an environmental standpoint.
Advocates of regenerative meat (whether they realise it or not) often use it as a halo effect to justify consumption of ALL animal products. This is because regenerative meat is not an accessible option. It is merely a fairytale and a pipe dream. Regenerative meat is also not sustainable or scalable.

@@garry8390If you were vegan you would not eat animals. Veganism is about trying to cause the least harm towards animals, it is not a diet alone.
Other than that your health will detiorate on carnivore. Like a cat or dog your heart, kidneys, joints will stop functioning properly after a few years and you will end up with diabetes on top of your heart propblems. Humans are starchivores, not meat eaters.

A plant base diet won’t fit absolutely everyone.
      Much less a carnivore diet.
The point is that it is sustainable and perfectly safe to recommend to all people based on how well on average the diet holds.
Moreover, this matters not regarding the ethical points the world view sustains, it has practical application considerations, but the moral views stand beyond that.

I am sorry, I do not know, I am not a nutritionist or doctor or Diabetes specialist. I am not giving advice. If anyone wants to start any type of diet change, it is always best to consult their GP/doctor of some kind. Especially if they have any health condition.
I am simply saying when I went vegan my type 2 diabetes reversed itself.
This is obviously not possible for those with type 1. And I don't know about the other types.
Sorry. It also depends, different diabetes specialist and nurses all have different options. And at the moment for years now they have all been saying it is the carbohydrates you need to watch out for as they are the ones that keep your Sugars up. But I have no idea what about being vegan helped. I just know that that in less than two years of being vegan I went from having out of control blood glucose, on insulin, to reversing it. The only change was the diet.
So it may not be the whole vegan diet. It may be something within it. I have no idea.

Almost all of the top experts I have been following agree that the consumption of both meat and dairy guarantee the continuation of diabetes/insulin resistance, but that also minimizing or avoiding processed oils is important.(This includes all foods with processed oil in it, like vegan meats, all deep fried foods, almost all commercial salad dressings, etc.) A WFPB no-processed-oil diet has been proven to completely reverse T2 diabetes and even restore the health of T1 diabetics to the point where they can eat fruits and carbs in moderation.

The meat and milk from animals that rely solely on grazing ("regenerative") provide just 1% of the world’s protein. FCRN
If everyone in the US switched from grain-fed to pasture-fed beef, because they grow more slowly on grass, the number of cattle would have to rise by 30% and the land area used to feed them would rise by 270%. - Environmental Research Let.
Even if the US felled all its forests, drained its wetlands, watered its deserts and annulled its national parks, it would still need to import most of its beef.
Grass-fed cows’ diets contain more cellulose fibre compared to grain fed, requiring more fermentation to break the grass down, causing two to four times more methane to be released from the cows directly. Methane is much worse for global warming than carbon dioxide (CO2), as it has about 25 times more warming potential than CO2.
Plus, they take longer to grow and reach slaughter weight so they live longer and therefore have higher overall lifetime emissions. Plus, they require around 41 percent more land than grain-fed cows. Cows alone are responsible for 70 percent of deforestation in Brazil, so choosing to eat grass-fed beef will further exacerbate this destruction.
When it comes to the environment, grass-fed beef is not the lesser of two evils, and if you truly want to eat a sustainable diet, a plant-based diet is best as it produces fewer greenhouse gasses and requires far less land and water.

You're right, "sustainable" animal farming can only exist if industrial farming is there to make up for the rest of the demand. Anything else would require a 95% reduction in meat consumption if not more. If you eat only hunted or grazed animals you absolutely rely on everyone else continuing to eat factory-produced meat and to suggest others to follow their example is wholeheartedly dishonest.

Excellent points, except methane is 130 times more potent than CO2 while it remains methane in the atmosphere (8-12 years). The lower number is popularized by ag-funded organizations like FAO to deliberately dilute its contribution. Methane degrades into CO2 after a decade, so after that it only contributes GWP of one, but since we don't have 100 years to slow climate change before we start triggering tipping points, and since radiative heating is based on current gaseous concentrations, the short-term GWP potential is the only one we should be considering. You also didn't mention nitrous oxide, which is in animal urine, which is 265 times more potent than CO2, or the respiration of the animals, which are both considerable and often overlooked end products of animal agriculture.

The only place for beef cattle that isn't extravagantly wasteful is on marginal land. That's because fertile land can be used much more productively for plant agriculture. Unfortunately marginal lands tend to be fragile and are marginal because of adverse climate conditions like drought, so they aren't really suitable either. The beef industry exists on subsidies, and governments only subsidise it because people, like this bloke, mistakenly think it's necessary.
It's going to take a while to educate those people when the beef industry is actively engaged in green-washing and defending the indefensible.

To quote, "I assure you there are dozens of papers which make it perfectly clear that animal source protein and particularly animal fats are much better for you." Yes, there are dozens such papers, but then there are meta-analysis studies that clearly show that a plant based diet is healthy for all stages of the lifecycle. Heme iron, hydroxyapetite in milk animal protein are all easier to digest with less waste and not irritating or toxic. As well as having a _very long_ laundry list of nutrients that don't exist in plants. Retinal, Cholecaliferol, Taurine, Carnitine, Carnosine, Glucosamine. Many of which have hilariously powerful effects in clinical settings and in personal experimentation
