I am so excited to be joined today by none other than Ed Winters (aka Earthling Ed). Ed is a vegan educator who’s content boasts over 200 million views, he has also hosted numerous viral speeches, debates, and videos engaging in dialogue with non-vegans and skeptics. Ed has delivered speeches at numerous schools, universities, and major companies including Google, he has engaging audiences all around the world.
As an activist, vegan educator and more recently a published author, he is a firm advocate for animal rights and the vegan lifestyle. Ed’s advocacy centres around compassion, empathy, and open communication. In 2016, he founded a grassroots animal rights organisation called Surge. Two years later he launched Unity Diner - a non-profit vegan restaurant in London, all the proceeds from which go directly to helping animals. The culmination of that work is his longtime passion project Surge Sanctuary, which houses rescued animals on a vast 18 acre property.
Most recently, Ed has published his first book This is Vegan Propaganda (And Other Lies the Meat Industry Tells You), which presents an indisputable case for veganism. This is a book that is as much for non-vegans as it is for those who already lead a vegan lifestyle, empowering them to talk more confidently about veganism with the non-vegans in their life. The book explores the effects of animal farming across the globe and how they are rooted in a number of factors that have created our current system.
I am delighted to welcome Ed and find out more about the inspiration behind the book and everything else that he has been up to with his advocacy work recently.

In the past, you'd given me the impression that you were a woman.
I was curious as to why, then, you would sign off as "Klaus".
Odd name for a girl.
(... and now I understand; it's Klaus whom you were addressing.)
Quite right though, "propaganda"... as the Inquisition said about Galileo, Copernicus and Giordano Bruno,

"Project Fear", as Nigel Farage would doubtless have interjected (trustworthy as "the day is long" that he is).

Updated to say "I told you so" after reading the weak, anti-vegan comments, lolol. 😂🤣
46 years vegetarian, 16 of those vegan. I've yet to hear a legitimate argument against veganism from an omnivore. With the information available today, the real question is WHY ISN'T EVERYONE VEGAN?!
I almost went vegan (Mar. 19) but research suggested I try WF omnivore. Results are excellent, so NO to veganism!

@@Alan-rw3ez that's a pretty ignorant assumption. Nowhere was that insinuated. The dude would feel the same eating a WFPBD, they never went vegan so it's intellectually dishonest to say they feel better than something they never tried, and it's not an ethical argument either so it's a non sequitur.
@@80slimshadys I've tried WF diets, with both very low & moderate animal/plant ratios & the latter wins by a country mile. Veganism may not be a diet but it involves adopting a deficient diet, which I don't feel obliged to do.

@@nicksguitarlessons7482 so the people that were vegan in the garden of eden were extremely gullible and completely lacked awareness? That sounds like current vegans. I'd never want to be like that.
My favorite straw-grasping anti-vegan arguments (all of which I've actually been told):
1) Then Vegans shouldn't drive because driving kills bugs.
2) Vegans kill more life in the form of bacteria and waste more water because they poop more.
3) Lab meat is actually more cruel to animals because the animals will never be born and thus never have a chance to have lived.
4) If animals are being used as conduits for energy we could get more directly from plants, why don't we just eat the dirt?
5) Why would God put useless animals like cows and chickens on Earth, if not to be eaten?
6) Veganism is actually more immoral than carnivore, because talking about it just makes other people feel bad.
7) Hitler was a vegan.
8) If everyone went vegan, all the cows and pigs would breed and overpopulate and cause more environmental problems
9) Vegans are ego-maniacs. They are just pushing veganism for their own mental benefit and They think it's cool.
10) Women who swallow c*m aren't true vegans.
(I actually hesitate to post this, because anti-vegans will probably say these are great arguments and try to use them later)
They are trolling, hateful, pos. Ignore the evil apes.
Does give us the heads up though. Some of them make me laugh.
Some solid gems in there. I wouldnt worry about giving them arguments to the world, anyone with half a brain would be ashamed to say these seriously.

A hero! To speak out against oppression, creating the change we need with an effect in all aspects of life.
What about the oppression of vegan to people that eat meat, or ex vegans
@@victoria23n veganism is a moral baseline or philosophy against animal abuse. Do you feel the same for dog abusers or women abusers being oppressed? Because people actually made laws against those actions.
@@christianz8020 so you confirm that there is an oppression against ex vegans ,,and meat eater, and they should be compared with woman abusers and punished?
@@victoria23n no, actually woman abusers are oppressors. I was just using logic to identify the double standard of calling vegans oppressors when they merely speak out against violence towards non-human animals.
so wait opression? like vegan nutjobs going to supermarkets and pretending the meat is people and smearing fake blood all over, or protesting outside of meat and supermarkets or all of the youtubers who act like kids or say they want to kill babies or say all meat eaters need to be killed of have vascectomies? lol
What’s interesting is that the definition of vegan doesn’t necessarily mean anything specific except to cause the least harm or exploitation possible. It’s completely adaptable to any circumstance.
Yes it does. Vegan means no animal products. Then what's a word for that? I would like a word for that. Not just for vegan to mean niceness like you were trying to change it to. Some vegans don't care about every issue. Some vegans care about animals more than people. Some are vegans for just health.

@@MindVersusMisery Thank you for the kind words. They made my day. You are right. We are all in this together.
i believe Ed is temporarily living in the US
I often have to question whether many people even have conscience, given how many turn a blind eye towards animal exploitation, it's all about their own personal gain, convenience in their lives. My own father and mother and relatives are an example - they know the reality, but still choose to consume these products either because of a strong personal belief or they find excuses like ''raised locally'' and such...or they simply don't care. When i look at today's society i see gluttony, mindless consumerism with a complete disregard for consequences. It's such a sad and depressing reality, when you yourself are consciously aware of what's really happening, the horrors being commited.
It's hard for people to get past the old "we need meat to be healthy" belief. If you live in the U.S. then I can give some info that could help.
@@suicune2001 True, but there ius definitely more to it. Plenty of people won't change even knowing we don't need to consume animals.
They are not self aware and ironically are also the ones who lie and state animals are not self aware🤣
@@Kristers_K Yeah. Many may not until they realize they are harming their children as well as themselves. I also take note of what illnesses my friends and family have and tell them how eating animals is causing said issue.
But the most effective way I've seen, which is why I asked if you lived in the U.S., is government regulations and reports. Knowing it's bad for you is one thing but knowing the animals have leukemia, AIDS, and other diseases is another. It's also a very different thing when they are shown the very laws that say it's legal to feed animals feces, urine, ground up diseased animals (including cannibalism), antibiotics, and growth hormones.
I like to gross people out with the truth. lol. I also talk about zoonotic disease a lot.
@@suicune2001 I'm not from US, but i get it.
Here in Latvia veganism is a poorly recognized concept, although there are plenty of plant base meat/dairy alternatives and no shortage of grains, legumes, veg..etc.
But when it comes to people...heavy meat and dairy consumers, cancer is rampant, especially colorectal, as well as heart disease.
Everyone on my father's side going back many generations died of colon cancer in their 60s and my grandmother last year at 75...., late stage, just slowly withered away, skin and bones. Grandfather suffered and died with Alzheimer's in his early 60s. He sure loved his butter and everything else.
My mother had a heart attack 2 years ago at age 52. A a heavy ,meat and cheese lover.
it's a pattern that can be seen all over the world and it's quite sad.
Not sure about the goverment here, i'm not into politics, but the practices are the same as everywhere, dairy especially.
As a native Texan, I’m not surprised by some of these arguments at all😐

'There's no right way to do the wrong thing'. Solid.
Ed is the man responsible for me trying veganism and then never looking back…
Thanks Ed. You do the right kind of activism for us all, for the animals we exploit, and the future of our planet.
@Destro Societ sorry, but you’re quite wrong on many fronts, and clearly don’t understand how veganism works. Many are successfully vegan, but of course it’s possible to get it wrong - same as with any diet. You’re body isn’t starved unless you put the wrong things in it. Living vegan is perfectly possible if you look at your food groups, nutrients, vitamins and minerals.
There’s no reason to eat meat and dairy in our modern world. There’s certainly no reason to eat as much meat and dairy products as we do. It’s out of control and the world is suffering for it. It might not always be easy, but it is worthwhile, healthy and of great benefit to human health and to this world.
Meat and dairy is both exploitative and terribly damaging to the the planet in many ways. They damage human health as well. Major studies have shown this clearly.
With respect, please read more widely about both veganism and about the toxicity of the meat and dairy industries.
@Destro Societ You're the liar. Do you volunteer your time commenting on vegan UA-cam channels to help save vegans from imagined malnutrition? Keep in mind the original post in this thread is one of positivity and encouragement, smeared with your filth in your replies. I'm happy to take any supplements necessary to avoid killing animals, which you of course regard as a huge plus for your pathetic collection of hopelessly flawed arguments for promoting animal cruelty.
Thank you for everything you do for the animals, brother. 🌱
@Destro Societ Let's see, a dietician with a blank single-purpose spamming account... what is the likelihood that I'm going to listen to you and go back to exploiting and killing animals? Joe Rogan, a habitual meat eater like yourself talked about the many supplements he takes. And I'm no scientist, but I believe animals are pumped with hormones before slaughter for your consumption. If you disregard that, then you're being selective and inconsistent. To be sure, you will have zero effect on my stance, because I don't regard you as having any standing, importance or moral backbone.
@Destro Societ Your motivation for being here is surely benevolent... simply to warn vegans about malnutrition. Very kind of you to spend your time in this way. Not kind to the animals, though. So I will continue to be a vegan, regardless of the number of supplements I need to take. Animals flee from humans and try to avoid death. They are torn from their family and treated as objects with no rights or value (other than money for fharmers). None of that means anything to you... in fact, you're here to perpetuate that cruelty. I find it loathsome and despicable.
I'm halfway through his book. He seems most in his element when he's Socratically conversing, but I'm very satisfied with his arguments so far. Peter Singer's moral argument is better organized, and I think more clearly written, but Ed is presenting far better ideas, really locking down the environment and human well-being arguments.
Peter Singer supports veganism as a reason to excuse his Beastiality desires. He is a sick individual.
Who cares, he’s wrong.
...But if your having a heart attack on the battlefield, your meat eating won't help you much.

What if Ed is actually Jesus and he’s come back to test humanity on their compassion?
The second coming of Jesus will not be a soft spoken man making youtube videos. He will come back to judge the people of the world.
I understand that you want to praise Ed for his ideals and personality, but can you avoid blasphemy while doing it? Don't equate being vegan to the perfect holy righteousness of God. And I also understand that you think being vegan is a moral imperative but don't put words into God's mouth. If you believe that Jesus supports veganism, back it up with Scripture. Just because you think something is right doesn't mean you can use the name of God to promote it.
You could have maybe said something like "Compare your compassion to Ed's and see how you measure up". No need for sacrilege.
The first time Jesus came to Earth, He established a new covenant where people can be forgiven of their sins because He took them away on the cross. Here's some Scripture about the actual second coming of Jesus:
"“So if anyone tells you, ‘There he is, out in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Here he is, in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.
"“Immediately after the distress of those days
“ ‘the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’
“Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other." Matthew 24:26-31
"The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells." 2 Peter 3:9-13
@@Liana-vf3bd unlike scripture, veganism has loads of evidence to back it up. The bible, and God fearing people such as yourself may believe you can save the world which is your right, but vegans actually can save the world.
Jesus has been trying for 2000 years and there have been thousands of wars since in his name.
If you are a real, caring, and morally sound individual, you will see that causing suffering to beings when you don’t have to is wrong regardless of what you believe happens after we die.
@@BlapwardKrunkle I'm sorry, but I'm a bit confused. I have no idea what part of my comment warranted any part of your response. However' I'll try to address all of your concerns.
"unlike scripture, veganism has loads of evidence to back it up."
First of all, why are you making that comparison? I never said veganism didn't have evidence to back it up. My comment about using Scripture was in relation to proving that Jesus supports veganism (which is what the original comment implied), not the benefits of veganism in general. Of course if we wanted to argue the merits of becoming vegan in general, we would discuss things apart from Scripture. If we want to discuss God's character and lifestyle on earth, then of course we would use Scripture.
Secondly, that false statement would have never crossed your mind if you actually did research into the evidence behind the Bible. If you want somewhere to start, I'd recommend the book' Evidence That Demands a Verdict' by Dr. Sean and Josh McDowell. I never claimed that veganism lacked evidence, so I don't know why you would attack the validity and reliability of Scripture unprompted.
"The bible, and God fearing people such as yourself may believe you can save the world which is your right, but vegans actually can save the world."
I never said anything about being able to save the world. I don't know where this statement came from. On the contrary, if anything, I'm a liability to the world. I don't have the right to think I can save the world because I most certainly can not. The only one who can accurately say they are the savior of the world is God Himself.
I'm pretty sure that your statement about vegans being able to save the world was hyperbolic, so I won't dwell on it any further.
"Jesus has been trying for 2000 years and there have been thousands of wars since in his name."
Trying what for 2000 years? I'm don't think you understand what Jesus set out to do.
Even though we have all done evil in our lives (ex. lied, cheated, stole, insulted others, etc.) and therefore deserve death, God, the Creator of the universe, took on human flesh and came to Earth. We killed Him on a cross, but He used our evil for good. He willingly sacrificed His life as a substitute in order to save us from our sins. Everyone who puts their faith in God is set free from sin and forgiven! What's more amazing than that?! If you want a more detailed explanation on what Jesus accomplished on the cross, the youtuber Mike Winger has a great video about it called "What Romans Really Tells Us About the Cross and How it Saves".
In Matthew 20:28
, Jesus says "just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
And I don't know what implications you are assigning wars being fought in Jesus's name, but Jesus Himself told us that we should expect there to be wars before the second coming.
"You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8All these are the beginning of birth pains." Matthew 24:6-8
If I missed your point with that one, I'm sorry. I'm not really clear on what you were trying to imply by talking about wars.
"If you are a real, caring, and morally sound individual, you will see that causing suffering to beings when you don’t have to is wrong regardless of what you believe happens after we die."
Yeah, you can be vegan no matter what religion you are. Again, I don't know what this is addressing. My comment was not at all against veganism, it was against sacrilege. You can be vegan without being sacrilegious.

I will give a new argument. Humans have the wrong gut for a plant based diet. To prove it i will challenge earthling ed to a bare nuckle boxing match. Will he take the challenge? I will prove earthling eds weakness.
He could be as weak as a soggy toothpick but he'd still be right...
Our gut sure looks like it is made for a plant based diet--Human stomach acid is 4-5 pH (Carnivores pH 1), we have a relatively large cecum (Carnivores small to non-existent), we have carbohydrate digesting enzymes (Carnivores don't), our small intestine is 10-11x our body length (Carnivores 3-6x), we can't detoxify vitamin A (Carnivores can), our esophagus is narrow and can't stretch (Carnivores wide and elastic), our saliva is alkaline (Carnivores acidic), we have molars (Carnivores don't), our jaw goes side to side (Carnivores can't). And the strongest, biggest land animals are all herbivores (Elephant, moose, guar, horse, gorilla...).

The Fault in our Stars? Soul? Inside Out? that’s the closest i can think of without violence, betrayal, lying, cheating..
but you also have to take into account that a story needs some conflict, that doesn’t mean that it’s harmful, it’s about how the characters handle that conflict like for example in Zootopia, Legally Blond, A Dog’s Journey
i can’t have oats, bread, flour, gluten, yeast, bananas, avocados, peppers, avocados, coffee, potatoes, rice, carrots, melons, nuts and some seeds. i’m not going to survive off of beans and blackberries.
It sounds like you have food allergies. That would be a gut health issue. The gut lining has leaks due to lack inflammation lack of good probiotics, etc. It is a condition called Leaky Gut.
A friend of mine became allergic to more things, until he seemed allergic to everything. Lived on chicken, oranges, and rice, but then...that was no good.
Saw a Functional Diagnostic Nutritionist, and they said no preservatives, need trace minerals, enzymes, fiber, inulin, and had to rotate certain foods in and out of diet...
And detox for heavy metals/pollutants...
Did some genetic tests too, I think.
Functional medicine or Integrative Medicine or wholistic doctors may help.
Takes time. But now my friend has put on weight and is fine.
It's ok if you can't survive off of plant foods only, veganism means you reduce animal suffering in all reasonable ways.
However, this isn't an argument or excuse for 99% of people that eat meat for pleasure
None of those things are nutrient-dense or bioavailable. Get some organ meats in your diet instead.
One thing vegans/vegetarians need is B12. Only found in meat.
Many plants do have protein, however.
I think brussel sprouts is one of them. Which are better when broken down into small leaves, spiced/buttered...
Wild rice is better than brown rice.
Buckwheat is Not wheat, candy very nutritious.
Beans (legumes) have a wide variety and recipes.
Purple carrots and purple garlic are more nutritious.
There are many varieties of every leafy green, herb, spice, root, and plant.
They provide different vitamins, enzymes, minerals, which are used by different organs of the body. Plus pre-biotics/fiber which are important to maintain probiotics and remove toxins from the body.
Avoiding GMO, along with the pesticides that are sprayed on them, preservatives, chemicals, BPA, will help to heal the digestive system.
Meat is hard to digest, especially by a compromised gut lining (and therefore) immune system.
Need more minerals/trace minerals, too. Magnesium Glycinate, zinc, K1 & K2 to absorb/direct calcium.
Agricultural methods have changed, so you have to supplement. Sad, but true.
Unless you are Seeing Functional or Integrative Medicine doctors that know how to implement wholistic principles...diet/detox, nothing will improve.
Drugs have side-effects.
They are only a quick fix to manage a long term problem, usually to lower dangerously high/low levels. Eventually, the Functional medicine doctor will take you off all drugs, in order to get a baseline.
They will do 'challenge tests' and rotate food groups.
Traditional Medicine is at least 50 years behind other branches of healing/corrective medicine such as Functional/Integrative/Wholistic, which seems to find the underlying cause of each condition. These may become inter-related, because body systems work together.
The body has an amazing ability to heal itself through various built in means.
Give it what it needs, and keep out what it doesn't.
Traditional Medicine doctors aren't even taught nutrition anymore! Especially in relation to Physiology.
Big Pharma funds many medical programs and research, so... Doctors are encouraged to write at least 3 scripts, and work with salesmen to make more profit.
There are many cures/treatments, but if your insurance doesn't cover it, they will say - No cure.
We eat way too much wheat and meat. Due to the jacked up growing methods there is twice as much gluten in bread than at any time in history. It makes it hard to digest heavier foods, such as meat.
The meat animals we over breed are not fed right, either. And they are stressed, with toxins/cortisol from stress in their system. It's passed on to us. Another possible cause for anxiety.
Industries make this our food supply. Farmers don't eat what they ship to market, they keep better options for themselves.
We don't have a high energy lifestyle, or struggle to stay warm. Yet we eat like we do!
We don't need all this meat, pollution, suffering as a norm, and ignoring it in a foggy, delusional, complacent state.
A little, eggs, butter, milk, cheese. A humanely raised, quick kill of an infrequent, occasional bird/animal. Nothing goes to waste.
That is all we need.
The more we kill, the more indifferent we become.
To everything and everyone.
It is a power grab by oppressive regimes.
Robber Barons in the US drove every type of Indian tribe off their land. Europeans were still using firewood, and horses for transport. Not obsolete, then. Could have easily learned and integrated best practices.
Instead, we decimated over a Million buffalo. The passenger pigeon and many other species - extinct.
Apparently we were never too concerned about meat, as we were Killing.
We had Victory Gardens while killing people in wars, then.
Totally sustainable. interactive community outlets. Less crime.
So excessive meat consumption is toxic and inhumane.
It's really an Industrial problem.
If there is no demand/acceptance, it will not be profitable.
Vote with your purchases.
Consumers have clout.
If we don't eat animals the animals will eat us.
the cows we slaughter will eat us? the pigs we slaughter will eat us? the sheep will eat us? will the chicken eat us? will all these other things eat us, or is it just us that unecessarily slaughter our fellow animal?

But non vegans are the ones eating sausages right?
The only argument against veganism is that you don't have to exploit animals to consume them. If I die from a heart attack, why would it be unethical to consume my body?
Ill put that solid argument with the 'Alone on a desert Island tho?' one :D
You’re a human, and generally culturally your relatives would prefer you had a culturally appropriate funeral and/or burial.
Industry: forcefully inseminating, taking babies, imprisoning
People: do you think farm animals are happy?
What a joke.
Be healthy. Eat steak and lift weights.
The reason to eat meat and it’s associated fat is that it is the species appropriate diet for humans. Some people can exist on a vegan diet, but no society exists or has ever existed on it.
The Paranthropus did exist on a vegan diet but they went extinct.
i love ed!
Interestingly that person was right…Ellen White long declared that Meat eating makes one more Aggressive and Stupid…
Here's my reason why I'm not vegan, I'm weak, I suck, The Taste is too good that I'm too weak to stop, I'm a hypocrite, I can't help myself. I've watched many of Ed videos and Joey Carbstrong's videos and I'm trying making the change but I just haven't been able to do it.
Don't try to "get rid of meat" at first. Try to find as many plant based options as possible. They have to be things you actually enjoy eating. Eat more and more of these plant based meals. Get rid of all of the animal based food you don't love. If there is anything you feel like you can't live without, like chocolate or pizza, be vegan except for those foods. Going vegan was hard for me and it took me more than a year to do it and these is how I did it. Remember that a mistake yesterday doesn't justify a mistake today and try your best.
You become a vegan slowly, not overnight.

True about the argument being more politiced there, I think that goes for a lot of discussion and probably has to do with the pigeonholing that is so prevelent within US politics and society more broadly

The question on weather you are vegan or not is ultimatly an ethical discussen, a philosophical argument with many aspects but it comes down to right and wrong, it comes down to morality. Is it wrong to take a life or cause suffering to support your own, in an age where it is not a necessity anymore for most people. My question always is, how relative or universal is morality?
The Texan's argument about bloodlust is probably a bastardization of the idea that wild dogs or hunting dogs (and probably other carnivorous animals) will develop of sort of bloodlust when they taste their first fresh kill. I think even domesticated dogs are like this if they kill a cat or something. They become more aggressive and start seeking out other things to kill.
Dogs are omnivores, but true
Bloodlust is a complete myth. I have hunting dogs that do crop protection. They won't kill anything unless they're told to do so. Imagine if police dogs had to be euthanized every time they took down a criminal. It's ridiculous.
I think there is some truth to the "blood lust" argument, in the sense that it does seem to make people more aggressive, of course you could also make an arguement that it makes people move overweight, less athletic and thus less able to fight. Whether the removal of that aggressive component could make a population so weak and feeble that they would fail to be able to defend themselves seems particularly silly especially in light of the fact that our current defense is based almost entirely on technology (not a lot of battles are decided with hand to hand combat anymore)
