- Views of Amtrak's James Whitcomb Riley or Cardinal on the long gone C&O of Indiana line over Cheviot Hill in suburban Cincinnati. The diamond scene is Cottage Grove, Indiana where the C&O of Indiana crossed the B&O line that the Cardinal has run on since 1986.
I’ve been waiting my whole life for video of Cheviot Hill. Thanks for posting.
Dad was a C&O “Hogger” out of Peru, IN. He often took me on frieght runs to both Chicago and Cincinatti. He often let me run locomotives if train wasn’t extremely long. At age 10 or so, he let me run trains both up and down the Cheviot Hill. Never forget him showing me how to govern the speed (air brakes) using the feed valve (located behind and below) the control stand. Was not legal with FRA but was the safest easiest way to control speed without “pissing” the air away. The engines we had at that time, were not equipped with dynamic braking. Also, the sand control was a long handled, spring centered toggle switch and on way back up the hill, in pouring down rain, he gave me a thick rubber band to tie the sand lever open so I didn’t have to hold it the entire time. I don’t remember the speed limit on the hill but we were only going about 25 or 30 maybe. Probably about 10-15 going up. Boy! Those were the days! Tracks I hear have all been pulled up. What a shame.
That was the view from my apartment in early 78. Shortly after that the line was closed. West side has never been the same.
I grew up in South Fairmount. Great footage. I watched the Amtrack come through there.
there are train tracks that go next to Nutrien Cincinnati Phosphate and ends just after new haven road but used to go over the great Miami river and can't find any photos of that specific bridge at all anywhere
The tracks in this video are part of that same line. I know there's a Facebook group for the C&O of Indiana where you might find pictures of the bridge, funny enough, as I'm sure you know, they only took the deck off that bridge and left the supports.
@@tommyw.9424 I have tried looking up the bridge to find old pictures and find nothing on it at all, or why it was taken down
My god!! This is some rare footage here! Thanks so much for sharing this 😎
Ikr! Loved it
Holy cow!!! C&O Footage!!
That is so cool. Takes me back to my childhood!
I rode the Cardinal from Chicago to Cincinnati in December 1973.

They had a dome car with that consist.
