Would you believe me if I said, someone told me to bomb bases in sim for stock grinding? I'm primarily an ARB player, I did try sim a few times and liked it, but RB is more comfortable with kb+m, and this guy just casually tells me to go to sim for stock grinding. And when I ask "so you think I should be forced to play sim to stock grind so I can play ARB?" he just hits me with "skill issue or something, idk".

I'm still more frustrated about the AIM-9M than the AIM-120. The AMRAAM is tough, but you can at least see/detect it coming, the 9-M has been straight cancer form the get go.

I got it to work up to a 3v1 with some okay positioning to reduce the different launch angles. Anything beyond that and its just too many targets for my lizard brain

Btw have you tried the SMT on sim? Its radar is way better than the su-27 radar, I like to play it more than the su-27 in air rb, idk how it is on sim

    • @albatross8868

Smt radar is marginally better with the downside being the airframe it is on. The smt has some of the worst flight performance out of all the top tier fighters. Combine that with the worst in class fox 3 and you end up with a very lack luster contender. I've used the base su-27 primarily with good results in both BVR and WVR as people are still adjusting to fox 3 style combat. I'm using a lot of rat style playing once the lobby fills up. I am no simplysinful thought that's for sure

From personal experience id take the base su-27 over the smt just from missile count. 27sm should have an improved radar but they just copy pasted it from the 27. Hopefully that gets corrected

I know it is kinda nooby but I love to fly out my Swedish Gripen against US players on the red side and I think that the M2k 5f is on the same level as the gripens, if not even minimal above with its 6 ARH missiles and the MAW system. But the only M2k that I have is the bullshit event one at 11.7 (which I think should go up). There fore I'd like to know, from someone with more competence, how the Gripens are in comparison to the M2k 5f , so I really would love a video about that topic.

Seems like sim turned out to be more interesting than I anticipated. Squish, what do you think about the fact that gaijin could potentially nerf notching in the future? Currently, war thunder has some basic code that shrinks the doppler filter width when a target is illuminated against the sky (it might only be for medium prf radars and there might be a specific number of degrees that you have to be looking upwards but I can't quite remember). However, war thunder doesn't currently account for signal to noise ratio and other mechanics which would reduce the effectiveness of notching especially at high altitude. Personally I think that a change like this would totally fuck air rb but I'd like it if the radar gunsight wasn't glitching around at 300m.
Also, the r-77 is currently underperforming in the drag department. Irl the waffle fins actually produce less drag at high speeds than conventional fins and bleed less speed in a turn at the cost of high transonic drag. The current r-77 drag seems too high overall and should probably have close to as much range as the amraam (at least) at high altitude under ideal launch conditions but it should still have higher drag than the amraam due to the larger diameter (fins aren't everything).
I'd also love another mirage fm video if you aren't sick of performing the fm testing.
Edit: I forgot to add that irl the amraam supposedly has the ability to only use it's radar at the last second if you maintain a tws lock all the way to the target. The target's rwr would only be spiked for 1-2 seconds. Would be fun as a us main and totally not op
edit 2: Just found a bug report about the r-77 drag that was rejected because the in game info it used was datamined. Also gaijin doesn't model variable drag coefficients unfortunately

The issue in WT, like in DCS is, if they chose to make missiles perform correctly down low, they will be stupidly overdone up high and if they perform correctly up high, they will be shit down low. Noone on public market was capable of creating proper dynamic aerodynamics and environment.
Most of the missiles i see in WT are done for high alt perf (as they are comparing them to real life info which is in 99% high alt), R-77 range is correct, its speed bleed isnt in turns, but straight line, it does reach 80km high alt high speed. Issue for R77 is, there are actual britsh documents giving amraam A/B 110+KM range high alt high speed and 80km mid alt mid speed range.
American 120 tests are often with rather conservative alts and speeds and russians in most manuals i saw are using really high alts and closure rates for fox1s and public R77 info is high alt high speed so their ranges looks good on paper but not when you shoot amraam in similar environment.
Given everyone shoots R-77 from really low alt and speed and everyone is shooting 120 at mach jesus, obviously it will be bad.
If you look at R77 DLZ chart that flies around on internet, its range down low is absolutely abysmal. to match Amraam, you have to shoot it at alts of 12-14km, not 3-5. I havent seen a single video of anyone doing it yet.

@@honzavasicek Yeah I'm aware of the difference between western and Soviet testing methodology. I'd assume that some of the reason for that difference would be that the soviets were more concerned about how good their numbers look for both internal and foreign affairs.
I found a reddit post comparing the straight line performance of the new fox 3 missiles on reddit recently. Launch conditions were 33k ft M1.45 and it appears that r-77 straight line drag/range is correct and slightly worse than the amraam which is much better than how the r-77 performs on a live server. So it appears that you are correct about r-77 performance under ideal conditions. I think that the main reason that the amraam performs better under these conditions in game and in real life is due to the sustainer.
In regards to the simulation of bvr missiles in public games at different altitudes the most likely culprit for this discrepancy is simply cost. I have no doubt that simulators created for the military have actual engineers working on the code. As a chemical engineer I can tell you that an aerospace engineer that knows how to code should be able to model complex aerodynamic equations that use variable coefficients for things like drag (which war thunder does not). The problem is that this level of simulation requires immense cost and time to implement. I find it unlikely that gaijin's missile/radar guy would be highly competent at physics, math AND coding without some sort of bachelor's. At minimum he would need to be experienced in multivariable Calc and matrix equations and research the physics part on his own to be able to implement the equations in code functions. You would probably need to pay 6 figures in the US to attract an aerospace engineer.
