The earliest recorded tattoo was found on a Peruvian mummy in 6,000 BC. That's some old ink! And considering humans lose roughly 40,000 skin cells per hour, how do these markings last? Claudia Aguirre details the different methods, machines and macrophages (you'll see) that go into making tattoos stand the test of time.
Lesson by Claudia Aguirre, animation by TOGETHER.

+TED-Ed would you do a lesson discussing dangerous and/or toxic materials used in tattooing?
+David K Ink used in tattooing is relatively safe. The only problem that arises is if someone is severely allergic to ingredients in the ink, which is why people should test to see if there is anything they might be sensitive to.
If there are toxins in the ink, it would be because of an unprofessional or irresponsible tattooist.
+GirtheAlienGoldfish Another problem with tattoos,regret.

One of the differences between a tattooed person an a non-tattooed person is, a tattooed person doesn't care if you're not tattooed.

+I LIKE FISH STICKS I LIKE FISH STICKS I LIKE FISH STICKS I LIKE FISH STICKS I LIKE FISH STICKS Actually, tattoos are really not very visible on dark skin. So in parts of black Africa, they use a different tactic. They place small things under the skin to raise bumps and make patterns that are permanent. Really.

Black Knight For like your entire body! :D
...and I'm in the process of removing a tattoo. I'm on my 11th session and it's still only halfway done *sigh* Kids, think before you get your tattoos. Opt for smaller size, black ink, and placing them where you can cover them with clothes.
if you use numbing cream it helps. its still pain but it becomes bearable pain thats more similar to the level of pain of getting a tattoo. but without the cream, its a motherfucker. yeah your back is a good place to get a tattoo i have one there as well.
ah yeah you can try one session and see how your skin reacts. laser hair removal is actually worth it b/c if you keep going, the hair stops growing back significantly so you can rid of the hair almost permanently
Or henna
What is the tattoo that you want to remove? is that embarrasing?
Nah got plenty of face tats and I have a wife and three kids
People, tattoos aren't for everyone. But just because you don't like tattoos does not mean that no one should get them, nor does it mean that they are worse or lesser because of it. People get tattoos for different reasons. And just because you can't relate to those reasons does not make them any less valid.
Some people find that tattoos make them more beautiful. And are a great way to put a mark on a big part of who they are or what they've been through. Or as a way of turning something ugly into something beautiful. A friend of mine had a really rough go at life, and dealt with a lot of depression, and ended up with some self harm scars. When she recovered and was better mentally, she hated seeing them because they were a permanent reminder of a bad time her life. So she covered them with tattoos, so instead of something ugly on her arms, she has something beautiful.
Or like me, I've gone through some shit, and I found getting a tattoo when I managed to overcome it therapeutic. A permanent reminder that I was strong enough to endure and succeed when other overwhelming problems came my way.
Plus I really, really like the way they make me look :)

My dad has a small tattoo dot on his chest. When my dad had throat cancer many years ago, they needed to mark a spot for them to send the laser to treat the cancer. The spot was a permanent tattoo, and it’s seen as a sign of dad surviving cancer
A few years later we adopted our dog Bagel, and shortly after adopting him we noticed he has a tiny dot on his chest just like dad does. Further proof that he was meant for us.
Very interesting and Cool!

It's 2019 and people are still bashing people for having tattoos... It's art people, get over it! I honestly don't understand why people care if other people have tattoos or not. Other people's tattoos don't affect your life in any way shape or form.
I Know right
Yeah right !! But be safe tattoos can also have side effects .
It's body mutiliation. I would never hire someone with a tattoo that was visible with work clothes on.

Wow very interesting video. I have started my half sleeve a few years back. Always wondered what makes them stay in the skin. They are indeed addictive and I am planning a large back piece and another half sleeve. Nothing lasts forever and everything fades with time. Its about the journey, the milestones celebrated in ink on a canvas of skin. Its living art and the art and skill off tattooists are improving everyday!
I just can't get enough with your vids... They're just great! Love this one.

Great video! Correction though: The needles puncture the skin at least 1000-3000 times per minute... not 50 times per minute. Really nice video.
As a nursing student who also does tattoos. This is now my favorite video of yours.
A nurse tattooist sounds like a badass combo, I'd probably trust my life on one, and I'm not even into tattoos
i don't get why people who don't like tattoos have to constantly feel the need to talk down against people who do like tattoos. if you don't like it, then fine. but you wouldn't go up to a beautiful mural painted on a wall and say "that is ugly! how could someone ruin that plain white wall with this permanent eyesore!" so don't go up to a tattooed person saying "how could you ruin your body like that! you'll regret it later!" it's their body, let them decorate it the way they want.
Its kinda like breast implants. I don't want females to do it so I speak against it.
omarct what women do with their bodies is none of your business, same with someone who wants a tattoo. let people live.
appleslinky Tattooing is a form of art. However breast implants are not, it's somebody who is insecure about their body. While I don't condone breast implants, I don't condemn it either. People should enjoy life as they see fit and not worry about what others think.
Guan Yu I agree with your points. I feel for omarct to speak against it is rude to those who want the implants done, however. People should be able to do whatever they want with their body, no judgement. I feel you have the right outlook.
Abby what people do with there bodies is our interest as a whole the better thing to say is who cares if it’s not hurting anyone..

Just got a tattoo last night on my back and arm. I somewhat enjoyed the feeling and I thought about this video while getting them
That also explains why you shouldn't drink or smoke while it's healing, there are less macrophages to "soak up the ink". As for these comments, I'd like to express that everybody carries stuff around with them, maybe it's their baby blanket, the locket that their mother gave them... but some people like to travel light and keep the memento on their skins. It's a personal choice and it doesn't make you a better or worse person.
Wow the comments just seem to be filled with people going against tattoos. Its art, not some horrific body mutilation. I have several tattoos myself, some from almost 10 years ago. Im still as happy with them since the day i got them.
Uncle Tom hey I know this comment is old, but as someone who will never get a tattoo I can respect it as an art form. But also a lotta ppl against tattoos jus don't want permanent markings on their body, art or not
Respect is as a time in ur life , no matter if it’s negative or positive . Just like a memory u can’t run away from it
I҉ ҉l҉i҉k҉e҉ ҉b҉t҉s҉ xD
It can also be a family marking as well, for example, some of my family members have a red dot tattooed on them to honor the death of my great grandfather who died from cancer.
Uncle Tom I only saw a few comments bashing tattoos. The rest were about the animation and how informative it was. But you’re right. It’s not mutilation at all, it’s an image or a resemblance that is so important to you that you decide to make it a piece of you.
Always wondered if cells regenerate why tattoos remain in them. Thanks for the clear-up!

This was interesting and informative.
minute 1:00 I used a device like the center right one to tattoo "punk" on my knee when I was 16 :D it really was just a pencil with a sharpened needle on it and blue water colour and I kind of slapped the pencil with another stick. Now 11 years later it's still there. I wouldn't do it again though. It didn't get infected at all but it's just a blurry mess now :P
thats a cool story to share!
That's a great snapshot of the 16 year old who became you. I've always thought that tattoos are like diary entries that take a little more commitment than most. I bet that section of your life is just a little sharper in your memory than it would be had you not given yourself a daily reminder of it.

Good chapter of cells at work.
People seem to be very concerned about getting a tattoo due to its permanence. I have a full-leg sleeve that I am working on and have plans to get more. I have no concern that I will be displeased with my tattoo as I age. The current tattoo that I am working on represents me and where I am in my life. As I age, it will always represent that, whether or not my values are changed or are altered in some way.
If you get a tattoo that means something to you, there will be no regret. Tattoos are beautiful ornaments to one's skin, in my opinion. I know others will disagree, but I hold firm that I have none, and will have no regrets as I age, in regards to my tattoo.
This just made me want to not get a tattoo even more than before
