BMW F30 Engine Mount Replacement DIY - N20 or N26

  • In this video I show you how to replace the engine mounts in your F30 BMW. I do this on my 328i with the N20 engine. This would be the same for the N26 powered F30 as well. This was a relatively simple DIY and did not take a lot of time.
I replace the engine mounts due to the amount of movement the engine experiences under load. You can especially feel it when using the engine start/stop function.
To do this you'll need an engine support bar.
If this is the first video you are catching of mine please consider subscribing. I upload regularly.
    Thanks for watching :)

There are holes on the subframe that allow you to see and feel if the mounts have failed, outside of doing a rock back and forth check. These are fluid filled mounts and there is potential for them to leak, puncture. Great vid!

As an owner of an F30 328i I'm super grateful for this series. I intend to own the car for 150k miles and do as much of the work as I can. Being a SULEV car in Oregon a huge portion of the engines components are covered until 150k miles since they relate to emissions regulations and I intend to try and make use of that warranty.

When you removed the vacuum hose from the engine cover, oil was coming out of the engine cover and hose.. I would replacing your vacuum pump. On the vacuum pump side where the vacuum hose connects (pipe) , there's a one way check valve with a diaphragm. The diaphragm is torn. You can just replace the "brake vacuum pipe" instead of replacing the whole pump. At my dealership, we see this every day. Great video by the way.

Great vid and definitely keep an eye on the engine mounts if you have a lowered car. That harsh ride may not bother you but your engine mounts don't care for it much.

Would a sign of a bad motor mount be a fluid substance such as small amounts of hydraulic fluid spraying onto the lower back left of the fire wall near the left engine mount? I’m also experiencing other mount failure symptoms. I noticed a burning smell but it doesn’t smell like engine oil or coolant ?

I had a bad left hand mount on my E39 530D. Symptoms were engine vibration and noise at low revs in Park & Reverse. In Drive, or any of the other forward gears everything seemed normal.
The bolt was breaking away from the rubber hydraulic part of the mount but no leaking oil.

Would the car make a knocking noise if the motor mounts fail. I have an 08 e60 and I thought my suspension was making the noise, ie sway bar links or something. Two different shops said everything is tight. I did notice my engine cover is missing a front screw and one in the rear and does shack. I’m not sure where the noise is. I next thing are the mounts.

I was really frustrated and went to the dealership with peace driving in mind. I talked to the service advisor and asked them to find the problem at anycost, and replace the part one by one. After changing the control arm again, and also tighten it with a jack-stand on the front wheel that they are tightening (they told me the correct procedure the wheel should be jacked into normal driving condition before tightening things up.)
After that, the issue was solved and the noise was gone for 70%. For the rest 30% maybe i expected to much on my 3 series to run like a 5 series or an e class over bump 😅
