BMW F30 (2012-2018) 3 Series Driveline Vibration Solved!

- In this video, we are showing the proper diagnostic steps to isolate the source of common vibrations and shimmies caused by driveline components. We will show you how to inspect a flex disc, aka a Giubo. We will take you through the detailed process of inspecting the driveshaft, aka propeller shaft, and show you how to identify a defective u-joint that may appear to be a good one. These diagnostic steps and inspections apply to most European vehicles that use driveshafts with integrated u-joints and have Giubo-style flex discs, including a wide range of BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volkswagen, and Volvo models. This specific vehicle in the video is an F30 generation (2012-2018) BMW 3 Series that had a driveline vibration felt through the chassis, seat, pedals, and steering wheel at speeds as low as 25mph! If you have been stumped as to why your European vehicle is exhibiting these shimmies and vibrations, this technical video is worth the watch!

Hey Dimetri, Just wanted to thank you for your awesome video and it's helped me a lot. How you explain everything and show what your talking about in detail was awesome. I'd buy you a beer if I could. Cheers mate. Vince
Very Useful Informative Video ..
Hi Dimetri, thank you very much for uploading this precious video on you tube. It has increased my knowlwdge on trouble shooting drive train vibrations. I am going to use this info to solve my mercedes c200 vibration. 😊😊😊
Glad we could help! We wish you many smooth miles in your C200!
Great job on this video!!
Thanks for the kind words!
Thanks! One of the best videos on this topic. Did you ever feel like a "kick" while accelerating, potentially related to a worn Guibo flex disk?
Thanks for the kind words! We don't remember feeling a "kick" or any delay in the engagement of the driveline. It was only the vibration issue covered in the video.
I have a 330e from 2016. I have almost identical vibration issue. Comes in intervals, as a low level hum/rumble vibration/noise. Something is there at 35-40mph, goes away and then comes back at 70-80 mph. 4 sets of tyres, new front wheel bearings and alignment done. No change in the vibrations. Just ordered a new propshaft from Germany after watching this. 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
Wow! Let us know how it turns out!
Did it solve your vibrations!?? I have a 2015 550i with same symptoms
Is the issue got fixed after changing the prop shaft.? Thank you
We are swapping prop shaft this weekend, as well as changing the diff. Oil. I'll leave a post here if I remember 😊
@@singleplanediscovery3475 hello, is there any new?
Its same problem with my f10 520i. Like, i feel vibration from steering wheel & cabins. Smooth but disturbing. From cold start until I drove it, I checked to bmw services and they told me that my car have no problem. So weird
@alphacars
Thanks for the video! Just got my driveshaft out from under the car(rear one) - how did you disassemble the long part from the short part..? There’s no nut keeping them together like on older BMW’s… thanks for any pointers
I did not work on this car, but believe that they are held by an internal snap ring and you would pull them apart to separate them.
Same issue, came off the splines a little bit, then stopped, any luck with yours?
Hi, I’ve just dropped my propshaft and tried to split it. The shaft has pulled out about half way, but it feels like it’s being stopped by something. It doesn’t have the big nut like some of the other bmw propshafts and looks similar to the one in your video. I did notice at the end of the shaft it has a clip looking piece, but haven’t got that far with mine yet. Any help on how to remove the shaft fully will be much appreciated!
Same here, any luck?
Same issues in my 2017 320d F30 190 hp. In January 2023I booked a check in BMW service here in Italy.
We hope you get it sorted!
They told me I must replace the dual mass flywheel. I'll let you know if this will fix the vibration. They excluded drive shaft or engine mount failure. I'm not 100% persuaded..
Was it the drivetrain?
Dual Mass flyeheel and clutch replaced. Vibration didn't change. Vibration pulley seems ok . I'm going to find a non official service. Now 221000 km.
@@sergioborghesan6318 sorry to hear that. 2018 320d 160k km, going from service to service… new brakes, new engine mounts, they say the car has no problem…
Also I have some vibrations on my F11... Those are present during the accelerations and at constant speed of 130-140 kph... I suspect the rear shaft rubber joint. I have also the engine mounts gone (I feel it, this is my third 5er), thing that makes the vibrations also worse...
Salut , am aceleasi probleme ca si tine ,ai rezolvat?
Hast du problem gefunden?
Changing the engine mounts and the differential joint the problem has gone!
I replaced my carrier bearing and guibos and that fixed my issue.
What were your symptoms, what speed? What bmw?
@@hanynowsky 50mph+ I had an annoying vibration in the floorboard
@@jeremywhite845 same as me. Thanks 🙏
@@jeremywhite845 did u feel in when driving slow too?
Hi I have a f30 rwd with 49k miles. When accelerating normal it’s fine. On hard acceleration it vibrates (the rear tunnel)
I also have this issue , did you resolve ?
I also have this issue. Noise is right under the console. At high rpm’s. Do we know what parts are right under the console that go bad? 2015 335i f30

Servus , haben sie gefunden die virbrations?
hi ? can u help me pls i have Vibration of my car Bentley gt 2013 v8 when i drive my car arond 40/ 45 50 i feel Vibration >
Our service team would have to see the car and do the diagnosis. If you are local, you can contact them through the website www.alphacars.com
Hi...what mileage was the F30 at?
This one was at 100,000 miles
I have a 2008 528i that it seems like the car is I’m vibrating and wobbling from the front end at speeds over 40 mph..not sure what’s going on. Any help would be appreciated
Call us at 978-263-9000 and we are happy to discuss your service and diagnostic needs! A specialty shop will be your best help. If you're diagnosing this yourself, start with a thorough visual inspection of all front end components, and ensure your wheels and tires are all true and balanced. Without seeing the vehicle in person, that's the only general information we can provide as a starting point.
@@AlphaCars what is a prop shaft?
@@AlphaCars question..I had my passenger side of my car jacked the other day..other down..I went to move the tire from the 3-6 position again the tire moved like the other side was off the ground..should that happen..really appreciate your help..peace!

Hello, can someone help me. I have a 2012 F10 BMW 528xi it's drives smooth until I drive over 60mph than it vibrates like crazy.
Rear differential bushings
i got a 2014 328d on 270k bmw in canada just quoted me 1800 CAD just for the part. Found a used part with a warranty ordered it from US for 260 $ waiting for the part
to arrive. so all I’m saying is never actually buy the parts from Bmw it’s self at this point there is so many used parts with warranty available on internet even though it’s harder to work on BMWs compared to other vehicles it’s nothing impossible i’ve been doing pretty much everything myself in my underground garage 🤧🤧
milage?
This one was at 100,000 miles
So the remedy was replace anything related to drive train 😂
Great question. The approach is, as a first step, to inspect everything and, given that the vehicle had 100K miles replace worn parts. Most of the time, it will address the vibration concerns. While it made the car drive better, the vibrations were still present. So, this video describes the additional diagnostic work, the drive shaft U-joint inspection, that was done by the shop. In this video, we show the specific issue with the U-joint that caused the driveline vibrations. Thanks for asking the question.
