If anyone does want to try this challenge themselves or have any more detailed questions, please send a reply since I made a lot of the current routing and have a great deal of knowledge on this category
What's also really hard is playing through every level in the game completely melee-only (except when you have to fire a gun just to progress, like when you get the Scatter Gun, or the 40 guards at drill platform mission). If you use Hero Mode and have unlimited Dark Jak though, you can get through boss fights easier.
I'll be the technical speedrun nerd and elaborate on a few things and post some fun facts: At 1:28 Mar's tomb skip is performed, which is one of the oldest major skips in the entire Jak series, discovered around 2008. This act of "skipping into a later mission" and then the game just giving you everything is something we've been looking for for a later mission in the game for YEARS. The jak 2 speedrun is 54 minutes for an any% run, but could go down by as much as 40 minutes if we could skip into a later mission into the game. It's quite convenient the game just gives you everything though, it works in Jak 3, where multiple skips into later missions have been found. At 9:50 before the hover glitch was discovered in late 2014, we actually just reached the hut with something called an "extended frontflip" which is just the act of cancelling a jetboard trick with a frontflip for a little extra height. You can barely make it to the hut that way. At 10:25 the invulnerability glitch is pretty straight forward. You pulled away the jetboard on the exact frame as Jak was dying, so Jak is dead but you can still move around, which means he doesn't take any damage. Great video though :) feel free to reach out if you have a future challenge in mind for Jak 3.

Its hilarious. About 2 months ago I was playing this game and said to myself "it'd be cool if Gamechamp did a challenge for this game. You can't do orbless though so what would she do? Gunless maybe? but that sounds kinda hard if only for the Tomb boss fight." I uh didn't realize I wished this into existence.
I came to Gamechamp's channel (a while ago now) for the game challenges, I stayed because of her mad skills. And her voice and sense of humor which are also top notch. And I really want to read that fanfiction now should I be worried
That was way more technical (and still quite interesting) than I had first anticipated. Though in case anyone good at video games decides to attempt a glitchless "least amount of gunshots" run, good luck recovering the seal piece from the water slums.
@@sutfolsemaj I named that mission because it is one of the most memorable and frustrating ones, but yeah, it's not the hardest one to do without guns :)
@@DominoPivot awwww I just got baited haha totally respectable! Honestly I don’t even remember the last time Ive done the mission, I only ever do the speedrun route for fun now
Game: "Okay, it's time for a gun tutorial. Press R1 to shoot, can you do that?" Gamechamp: "Oh well! Never mind that! Now I have a *reason* to go out of bounds! dt/dx(a-b)^2 sqrt(t+x)! That's the scientific formula opening a path through the fourth dimension! Now I just walk through the walls!"
That was awesome! :) I loved breaking jak 2 when I was younger. Since you mentioned Jak 3, not sure if you will do anything with it, but if you do.. When you "broke reality" that can also be done in Jak 3 relatively easily, but it happens later in haven city. If you go to the new district, and then go down the elevator to the sewers, and then go right back up, and go to the right I believe it was and hang the corner, the loading just breaks allowing you to use a zoomer to fly into infinity. Not sure if it can be used for anything, but I figured I'd mention it.
This whole time when she wasn't streaming, I assumed she was just resting after the last video. Turns out she was actually beating the laws of physics to death with a hoverboard.
I'd love to see Jak 3 next. Not because speedrunners have done it, but because they haven't! Also the Sly 1 coinless video needs a Part 2 as the route has changed drastically, plus I'm pretty sure there's a working 100% Coinless now.
I used the Tomb of Mar glitch to help me when I ran into a issue that prevented me from finishing the game, and I needed to start a new game. So thanks you for helping me skip hours of gameplay that I’ve already done (sort of).
the best part about this is that the detour glitches to get to the mountains for extra metal head gems is actually unnecessary. When you get to the first gun course and it tells you to "fire the scatter gun", you can pull the trigger and immediately punch to interrupt the shooting animation. No bullet gets fired, and your ammo count doesn't drop, but the game registers that you pulled the trigger and lets you continue with the training course. The training course itself is entirely possible without using the scatter gun, and the next mission has plenty of metal heads to get your final count. That being said, the method VG used is far more entertaining to watch lol
7 months late, so actually when the jak community was helping me make this category possible, focus was more so on "how do we make this possible?" and once we found a solution that also happened to be fast and easy we stuck with it. Its still the fastest known route for skullgems for gunless. Sure it was a "challenge run" but it turned into a mix of both speed and a challenge run. :p
@@Raosal1 Thats a fair point, At the time of this comment I hadnt taken into account that while it may be easier to melee past the gun course and do the following mission, its quicker to fly to the mountain than it is to fly to the next sequential mission. The only distinction I would make is the difference in difficulty. I attempted the glitch for a few hours after watching this video and sadly its outside my skillset lol. made it around the load barrier once, over about 4-5 hours but failed the dismount from the zoomer. But getting the gun shot glitch is something i did in like 5 minutes of trying it. I wanted to see how many missions were beatable without guns lol. So for the time being if I ever do my own runs ill have to take the slower more accessible route lol Part of me still wonders if we will ever have a day when an "all missions" gunless route becomes possible. from my own tests its only about 15 missions that "seem" impossible atm, but im no glitch hunter, so my word means nothing lol
@@22pepperjack I think thats awesome you gave it a shot. All missions gunless would be interesting, scrolling through the comments on this video its a pretty common thing mentioned and honestly I don't know. First mission that pops into my head early game is "destroy eggs at drill platform" you have to use a turret gun to destroy the eggs. Dark bomb doesn't work and neither the square X uppercut spin. Even if you somehow make it to the end gate the mission isn't counted as completed game doesn't let you leave, but who knows maybe there's a way.
@@Raosal1 yeah, any mission with the gun turrets seems auto locked. The only thing that potentially comes to mind for the drill platform eggs is maybe a deload similar to the training area points at the start of Jak 3. I don’t have the skills to perform the infinite hover (nor do I remember if you have the board at that point) but maybe? Idk lol. the rail sections with the gun ship later on I think are similarly locked by inactive gates. I need to go back through at some point and get a list of the levels that likely can’t be done yet. Could be interesting to work on those levels and maybe solve it lol but only time will tell if it ever becomes a thing.

I don't think you can get past the tutorial in Jak X. I recall one of the sections being a race where you have to lay a bunch of landmines to not get blown up by a stream of missiles. I'm pretty sure there are too many missiles to tank, and I don't think there's enough healing to survive even if you had turbo from start to finish
10:50 I believe what happens here is you splat outside of the death trigger, and reenter gameplay passing through it, so the game thinks you're dead while still having full control. If you notice, the health bar on the hud disappeared when the splat occurred, which usually happens when you fall into a pit like that.
“Sorry, Gamechamp, but I expected you to do this challenge in Jak 1 before Jak 2.” Is what I first thought, but I then idiotically remembered that Champ already did an Orb-less run of Jak 1, which didn’t even have guns in the first place.

"If it goes bang bang, we're not allowed to bang bang" -GC3K, 2021
The physics breaking in this episode is so strong that I genuinely had to watch this multiple times to understand anything that even happened
The Luigi fanfiction is coming...

"Super duper fancy walk of the ledge super uppercut super duper trick" is exactly how I understood these moves as a kid.
This is already one of my favorite episodes, all the fakeout “mission fail” moments and insane flippy tricks along with Jak 2 apparently being the most broken game I’ve ever seen in my life was a lot of fun to watch
*about to go to sleep after getting home from work*
*Gamechamp uploads, immediately taps video without a second thought*
I appreciate this one a lot, this series of games was part of my childhood, nice run Gamechamp
I’d love to see a Jak game pacifist run. Especially one of the future games with all of the civilian lose buttons walking around
@@SirBlackReeds There’s that but maybe I should have specified the request to be maximum percent haha. I think the real fun of the challenge would be the races through town and missions like that
idk if that's possible. You have to kill Gol and Maia and the lurker at the end of Mountain Pass nomatter what in Jak 1, you have to kill Kor, the Metal Heads in the escort mission, and Krew nomatter what in Jak 2, and you need to kill all of Errol's minions during the final boss and Errol himself in Jak 3 nomatter what. These are all based on Jak speedruns, btw.
It's always a good day when a new VG Myths episode is up
Its hilarious.
I don't know what will come next but I fear it might blow my mind again. Well done Gamechamp. You never cease to amaze me
Oh hey, this was posted more or less right as I'm getting deep into the series again. Really excited to watch!
your humor throughout is hilarious, and really shows you understand the game very well
Also. The ammo is made from Eco, plus the orbs have become quite rare. It is my belief the guns are actually made from the Precursor orbs
I don't fire a single shot in that mission. You can jetboard through the entire thing if you're really, really precise.
@@sutfolsemaj I named that mission because it is one of the most memorable and frustrating ones, but yeah, it's not the hardest one to do without guns :)
You also can Dark Bomb the water, which kills the robot and jet board through the water all the way over. Easiest way to beat it imo
@@Jackdude345 Yeah, but that's the kind of hack for people who are bad at videogames. Totally respectable people, but that just wasn't my premise :P
@@DominoPivot awwww I just got baited haha totally respectable! Honestly I don’t even remember the last time Ive done the mission, I only ever do the speedrun route for fun now
In this video, a wonderful lady teaches us that my favorite childhood game is held together with the glue from a single purple glue stick
Me: sees "Can you beat Jak II"
No. No I cannot.
I love how almost the first half of the video was entirely dedicated to skipping the gun tutorial.
Sick floppy tricks are the secret to immortality, look at Tony Hawk he’s been through madness and is still going
Game: "Okay, it's time for a gun tutorial. Press R1 to shoot, can you do that?"
Gamechamp: "Oh well!
I love Gamechamp videos. The dead rising, rockman, and the pokemon videos are my personal favorites
This whole time when she wasn't streaming, I assumed she was just resting after the last video. Turns out she was actually beating the laws of physics to death with a hoverboard.
What else is new?
"Sick flippy tricks are the key to immortality"
My favourite quote.
Finally. Jak II as it was meant to be played.
4:54 You had me so hyped to see an incredible speedrun trick too! 🤣🤣🤣
Beat dark souls without turning the console on.
"Now this seems impossible, but thanks to a trick used by speedrunners...
...all we have to do is buy the game on Steam because according to the all-knowing PC master race, a desktop is legally not a console."
@@spectrasoulfaire215 there really is a loophole for everything.
@@Faux_Sunlight yeah but now you have dark souls on pc
Gonna have to do some Quantum shxt.
"We'll have to get reality to exist again" that's deep bro
So for the time being if I ever do my own runs ill have to take the slower more accessible route lol
Part of me still wonders if we will ever have a day when an "all missions" gunless route becomes possible. from my own tests its only about 15 missions that "seem" impossible atm, but im no glitch hunter, so my word means nothing lol
We're now to the point with patreon that I was convinced this video's ending was a fakeout due to how much time was left afterwards...
The jokes in this video are gold 10/10 would watch again
Yo, you are such an awesome content creator! You make me laugh; i’m sure you hear this a ton, but all of your hard work towards sticking to the absolutely bonkers challenges you set out for yourself is really amazing and i’m always left in awe
now to the question everyone has on their mind: has the slowest chess game been actually going anywhere?
Yes, they're starting to go towards midgame
if your looking for ideas, 'destroy all humans' is a game series that exists. the challenge surely writes itself.
Ah I see, the aim is to specifically kill every human you come across.
(That could actually be quite hard.)
This classic game breaks absolutely beautifully lol, makes me kinda wish I still had my old PS2 and copy to go back and mess around in it. Was a great part of my childhood, very nostalgic watching the vague suggestion of physics that is the vehicle system in Jak II.
JAK II!? WOW, YOU'RE TACKLING MY ENTIRE CHILDHOOD!!!!
That being said, this is an absolutely wonderful video and you did your very best on this! I remember your Darkest Faerie video as well, so this is a very nice treat! :)
The centipede chase was such a nice throwback to Crash Bandicoot.
This trilogy was my childhood I'm glad you're doing a challenge on it
oh my god this one is even more broken than usual
Gamechamp has become a speedrunner of time to use speedrunner tricks at this point, always great to hear "is optional in speedrunning"
Haven't seen much of Jak outside of what she has uploaded.
But can we take a moment to appreciate the animations in this game. The movement is so stretchy and bouncy. I Love it
The Jak games have some of the best-feeling movement in game history. :>
"Can you beat Jak II with no guns?"
The answer: "Well, no. Definitely not. Absolutely under no circumstances. But actually yes."
I would say that this game is held together with duct tape, but it appears to be barely held together at all.
speedrunners: boosted uppercut

I’ve never tried to do any glitches before. Seeing these done is so jaw dropping. I love these videos!
Every time she says CHASM I die inside
Lova ya gamechamp!
Same.
I've had this thought for both Jak 2 and Jak 3. I just like the idea of being able to beat them as if you were Jak from the first game.
I was honestly expecting a run through all the game's missions without guns like in Ratchet Gladiator, but this'll have to suffice.
Great work Gamechamp! Happy JakMonth
Man, I've been thinking if this is possible in this game and the sequel. I've been trying to see if we can beat Jak X combat racing without using eco weapons. If I make progress I'll let you know gamechamp!
10:50
I believe what happens here is you splat outside of the death trigger, and reenter gameplay passing through it, so the game thinks you're dead while still having full control. If you notice, the health bar on the hud disappeared when the splat occurred, which usually happens when you fall into a pit like that.
I was looking forward to this, especially for the sewer level
Jak 2 game developers: sooo, how much of the game do you intend to play dev intended?
Gamechamp: *no*

“Sorry, Gamechamp, but I expected you to do this challenge in Jak 1 before Jak 2.” Is what I first thought, but I then idiotically remembered that Champ already did an Orb-less run of Jak 1, which didn’t even have guns in the first place.
