All I have to say is thank you sir this is the video I needed. Going to buy some axles this weekend to start my swap
Awesome! Don’t buy the rock auto ones if you plan to launch the car at all.
You will want the OEM zx axles
@@SpooledUpTV Thank you again man, you and the datsun community are great and I dont launch mine at least not yet but thanks for that info man
Video for sure swayed me to do the CV conversion on my z!! Thanks for the info!!
Ok real question- Anyone have a source for turbo z31 CVs that arent these cheapo rock auto versions? It seems theyre fairly AWOL recently, which really blows.
You can use the 280zx turbo axles as well, and all you have to do is get material and get an adapter machined. This is the route I've gone. 18$ 4140 material on eBay, 100$ machining, and picked up the axles from a pull-a-part for 51$.
Chris Stewart can you send me info on this? D14duarte@gmail.com
How much was the total?
The total was about 169$. Yet there are good options now out there using z31t axles etc. Thats the route I went in the end.
7:15 try to keep the welding surface as clean as possible in between each weld. The benefits are that your weld will be cleaner, penetrate the metals better, and be easier to clean up with a grinder. I find that one of the steel bristles brushes from Harbor Freight work fine.
Awesome! Thanks for the advice!!!
Thanks for the vid. I️ have all these parts just sitting in the garage and haven’t gotten around to installing them. Looks like a pretty simple install.
+Coastalways super simple! Just do it! It’s worth it!
Hey if you still have all those parts sitting I will buy them from you
Adapters use to be sold by modern motorsport, they are no longer around but I do have the adapters on my car and thinking about taking the pieces to a machine shop and have them fabricate something like the ones i have
Awesome video, thanks for the walk thru.
+Kelly Cobilich no problem! Glad you enjoyed it!
Love you video sir. Nice, clean, to the point.
Thank you
Dear sir, my 1971 Z with Rb25det R34 Neo stock turbo currently running R180 rear differential. I am going to LA to purchase R200 3.9 tomorrow. Do you think I should go with vlsd or non lsd?
Nice z... thank you for making the video. I'll be surprised if that weld holds and those cv to stub axle bolts need to be a higher grade and fine pitch. it's not you that's the welding problem it's your welder.
Haha it’s been fine so far! Fingers are crossed. It sits all the way down in there too. So it would have to be weird pressure to break it but I won’t be surprised. We finally invested in a good welder! Lincoln 180hd. I’ll get some practice with that soon! But thanks for watching Man! Also, it’s an R200
I would be worried about binding issue since you can't flip the axle cages like most people do with the OEM axles. Not sure it the axle adapters you used are shorter than the Modern Motorsports adapters but if they are not you might get binding issues. Would love to see an update when you get some more miles on it.
+JT's Garage I was told these were thinner adapters. I can say that the way my suspension sits from being lowered, it would have to bounce up to even come close to binding. Also, went out scooting around the other night and it feels fine. Nothing out of place and feels smoother than the old axles.
I figured I'd have issues in my z31 since it's got an LS in it now and I had the stupid idea of throwing boost at it idk I can do it but I wonder if it's even sensible to swap an inferior irs for a strong solid axle and lose a bit if handling idk my car is just a cruiser and occasionally a race car but idk someone give me their opinion yes I can instal a solid axle but my question is WOULD YOU keep in mind the car will be making more hp the the stubs can handle
Do a follow up after some miles and hopefully some hard launches. Would love to see how these hold up.
+nisssmo 510 on my way to film some stuff!! Will update ASAP! Subscribe to stay tuned!
I have snapped those CV axles with my 72 240z L28 turbocharged engine
Thank you
You’re welcome
order cv joints for r31 or laurel hard top hc31 with inner flange can fit easy
Oh really? Any links?
did you use the washer that came off original? mine wouldn't fit back in after the adapter plate was welded.
hey! nice setup, but where did you find those plates adapters? thanks!
How the cv axle held up so far? Able to launch it from a stop?
Can anyone help me or point me in the direction for upgrading the CV axles on my 280zx?! Also, excellent video! Long live the Z!
did you ever figure this out? I know the N/A zx has 4 bolt companion flanges, the turbo has 6 bolt companion flanges. so you cant do a turbo cv swap, but the z31 has 4 bolt companion flanges. I am currently trying to figure out if its the same length and bolt pattern
@@andrewreardon2056 my 280zx is the turbo model. So I have not been able to find a way to upgrade my CV's. Unless theres a companion that converts 4 bolt to 6 bolts
I used this set up on my 240z with a kaaz lsd and 275/60/15 hoosiers and I brake these axles all the time around 500hp ls1 6 speed 🙄
Yea, I’m my later video I discuss the rock auto axles suck. Get OEM turbo axles
@@SpooledUpTV If youre still keeping tabs on this-
I know you were making over 500 whp at the time, do you know how much torque? Also if you know, what kind of driving were you doing that was breaking these axles? Was it anything in particular, such as hard launches / power shifts / track use- Or would they just let go while boosting down the high way? Thanks!
Ok were did you get the adapter?
Can you send me a link to those billet bracket for the axles? Thanks
Where you get those solid u-joints. Cool Vids
The Adaptors are not available anymore. Do you have any info on the part?
CJ Cave on Facebook makes them. Hit him up
So how hard was that nut to get loose on the back of the wheel hub?? Looked easy but i have my doubts lol
Wasn’t too bad
Great video on the Z31 CV axles installation NEED YOUR HELP looking for the steel adapter plate like in your video can you send me the link or info on where to buy it please
A gentleman on Facebook named CJ Cave made them. The link to his Facebook is in the description! Good luck man!!
Silvermine motors makes them and are readily available
Would the cv adapter plates they sell on zcardepot work on these cv axels??
Is there adapter you can buy then just buy z31 axles to bolt on ?
Plus when you removed that 27mm axle bolt it came right off. Those have a torque of 230ftlbs and they don't just spin right off like yours did. The you used the old nuts yikes!! did you retorque to spec or just use the torque gun?
Again, love the input. It was taken apart previously. Then put back together to shoot the video because I forgot to film it. Also, I torqued to about 6 Uga-duga... is that good enough?! I would have went to 7 but I was afraid it would be TOO tight!
@@SpooledUpTV he called it a torque gun. Can’t take him serious after that lol
So whats the difference between left/right axles???
Just a little length
Yes all the turbo axles are the same, except the shiro special has different length splines and aren't exactly compatible.
na z31 axles have the same bolt pattern as a 280zxt axle but apparently are longer and not compatible with S30 swaps. Never tried it myself though.
+ThatKoukiZ31 awesome! Love the info!! Thanks for stopping in!
Is this using an R200 or r180? Where'd you get the adapters?
+LardoRetardo r200. The link to the Facebook of the guy who makes them is in the description!
Got any info on where to find these adapters? The link provided doesn’t work anymore. My wife and I have a 280z with an ls1 in it and I’m sick of breaking half shafts all the time.
Hit up CJ cave on Facebook. Also, find OEM z31t axles. The ones from rock auto and autozone are garbage
SpooledUp. TV I got in touch with him and will be getting a set of adapters on soon. Also found out he’s fairly local to me so that’s even better lol. As far as the axles go I don’t even know where to begin on where to try to find them at. Got any ideas?
Facebook groups for z31’s is where I found mine
Could you supply the info on the OBX LSD? I can't find them any more. Maybe I am looking in the wrong place. I am wanting to buy one.
I bought mine used but if you can find any for a Nissan r200 on Amazon or eBay, that’s the one
@@SpooledUpTV They are gone!! Yikes!! Not in stock anywhere. So if you see a used one please hit me up. Thanks. Keep up the great zideos.
@SpooledUp.TV The link says that it has expired and wont take me to the Facebook page. Tried to just go straight to Facebook but that didn't work either. I want these adapters. Where can I find them?
Look up CJ Cave on Facebook. He is the guy who made them.
Thank you. I caught up with him.
Do those fit a Subaru r180?
Dose any one know if this set up will work for 280zx ?
Very helpfull! Thank you
+BoostMonger no problem! Glad I could help!
will this be the same process for a 240z?
I’m pretty sure. It’s all dependent on the spine count inside the diff. I’m pretty positive they are the same.
I tried using the link to FB to buy a set of weldable adapters. Could you put me in touch with the guys who built you a set?
Look up CJ Cave on FB
SpooledUp. TV what’s the thickness of the steel adapters? I am going to have some made as I can’t get in touch with CJ.
I would say 3/8” or maybe a bit bigger.
Have you applied alot of torque on these yet to see if they hold up?
As much torque as I can give it. Lol so 450 ft/lbs

look right? I have a 78 280z longnose.
They say they are caged? is that true?
Those are what I have I think. They are a tripod style. Unless they changed something
You seriousely trust that weld job? By the looks of it I'd say you have about as much penetration as using bubble gum. Hopefully you put a good bevel on the mating parts so you can get some penetration. But personally I'd a had it tig welded for the simple sake of safety.
Not sure it’s a safety concern. Also, it’s very beveled. There is penetration then some additional added on top. Thanks though they have been holding up amazingly!!
Nice video. How are they holding up now?
Don’t do it! Get OEM ones lol
@@SpooledUpTV Hahahahaha!. Noted.
@@SpooledUpTV how did the welded adapters with stock flanges hold up?
Everything else has been fine. Even with my poop welds
@@SpooledUpTV Did you end up getting a set of OEM turbo axles? if so, did you have to shorten them at all?
LSD in the future? Thanks for the videos.
Yes, it’s been ordered. I’ll have videos on the install ASAP! Thanks for the support!!
I hate to ask but do u have a link to the obx lsd that fits? I want to check it out and read up. Thx again.
Any nissan r200 LSD should work from all I read.
Did you fill your diff yet
+Fuelocity nope, gonna send it! That’s why we have a spare!
How do you get ahold of the shop for these? Phone # doesn't work. Thanks.
Message CJ Cave on Facebook!
Silvermine motors makes them also
Silver mine stole the design. Support cj cave.
I tryed emailing and messaging cj cave and he never answer. Thats why i ended up using silvermine.
you think it would work on my 510?
+Yamazoku Garage that’s a good question. I honestly am not sure. Maybe reach out to Troy ermish on Facebook or something. He knows 510’s pretty well!
www.modern-motorsports.com/z31-half-shafts.html
They sell the correct width for a 510
Is there binding issues under full compression?
+Richard Retrotation I haven’t had any yet. But I haven’t driven a ton. I’ll let you know if I have issues.
Thanks. I'm looking to do the same w my car.
+Richard Retrotation do it! Was super easy. I was worried about it and siked myself out. Totally worth it and easy! Go for it!
Yeah, Man. You got me psyched. I'm going to dig out my parts right now and see what else is needed. Thanks.
+Richard Retrotation no problem! Glad to hear it!!
Little coke problem there?
Duh! Can’t you tell by my girlish figure?!
Was this on a r180 or r200?
Looks like there was an R 180 on the bench but I couldn't tell what was in the car.
R200. The bench is a 3.9:1 out of an s130 which is now getting the LSD. One in the car is 3.54:1 factory diff. So both r200
sounds like a new nightmare.. tell me i'm wrong
What do you mean?!
Need help with my 280z 1976!!!! Anyone???
What do you need help with?
SpooledUp TV I need help to see what shocks I need and a fuel pump and this be my first project car!!! and I have a 76 280z
sup dude i need your advice. the mounting bolt for my car center member seems damaged or bent and it just free turns when i use a socket wrench to take it off. how can i take it off? any idea?
Sounds like it could be stripped out. There are a few techniques. I would say google for the steps that seem to work best for you! Keep me posted on if it comes out well!!
Did you ever get a LSD in the Datsun?
I sure did!
@@SpooledUpTV OBX? Video? I am excitedly awaiting.
It was an OBX. I didn’t make a video :(
It's* COLD!!
It's = it is. Its = the next word or phrase belongs to it. : /
Aww thanks!! You da best!! 😍 hahahahahha
FIRSSSSSSTTTTTTTTTT!
+James Heischman atleast you aren’t Leigh!
Nice job. Cheaper is always better
I ordered the same adapters and just finished welding them up last night(i didn't make a video though). Now I just need to get the rest of my Z finished.

+Brian Ebling awesome dude!!! Glad to hear it!
Good info.
