Always love how Ed's labor is never calculated into the cost. Gives me a chuckle.

That's the mentality of a used car salesman, they only see workshops as liabilities and not assets, Mike's wired to treat mechanics badly and has had to fit a revolving door at every dealership he's run.

That was the premise of the show, to show what a well equipped DIY person can do (they say so several times in the show, and it's also in the Wikipedia entry). If any work was done by an external workshop (paint jobs, machining etc) that was included in the cost.

@@djbowler3333 These two words are alternate spellings with the same meaning. Labor is the preferred American spelling, whereas labour is the preferred British spelling. They both mean the noun and verb form of work.

I did an auto to manual conversion on my Datsun B310 Sunny. This 240z episode actually helped me a bit. I was an easy job. Swapping the pedals and installing the clutch master cylinder was super easy. Just had to remove the block off plate. Love my Datsuns

These are so insanely expensive at the moment. So sad that I sold mine for 3k back in the day.

Great video and just what I needed to motivate me to make the auto to manual switch on my ‘72 240z. I’ve had a 5 speed I picked up a couple years ago collecting dust in the garage. Thanks!

Love this video. I was given a 72 240Z last year and my only regret is that it's an automatic. This video shows me I don't have to live with that automatic, which after sitting for more than 20 years probably needs a complete rebuild anyway. One thing I missed: Is the length of the driveshaft different for a manual compared to an automatic? It looks like he's installing a new driveshaft, but unless I missed it, he doesn't say whether or not it's absolutely needed.

I have a completely restored 240z with a automatic transmission and have found out they are being sold for almost 20 percent less than one that has a 5 speed

Those kind of sports cars always deserved manual transmission. I don't know why they had an automatic option because it just took the enjoyment and controlling out of driving such a beast of a car, especially when it had the iconic 2.4L Datsun L24 I6.

The pedal box on the auto is different than the manual if memory serves. Also, a clutch pilot bushing needs to be inserted into the end of the crankshaft.

If you're gonna do the switch ABSOLUTELY go for a 5 speed. No more work than a 4 and absolutely huge difference on the freeway at cruising speed.

I wouldn't of changed the auto to a manual.
The idea is to make money it's more saleable with an auto as these days not as many people can drive a manual.
And as you can see it's an enormous amount of time and money to change it.

We sell vehicle car, truck, turreted & tracked and jet warbird ex CCCP. Not same as Wheeler dealer TV but buisness work out time spent to work on. If cannot make profit 100dollar hour on vehicle and 300dollar hour on warbird plane & gas turbine helicopter we not repair just break up parts. Good TV show but no good buisness.
