  • In this shop talk video I discuss some of the options when doing a limited slip differential conversion or swap. I take you through the reasoning behind my decision as I've gone through the process of a rear end conversion on my 1978 Datsun 280z. Thanks for watching ... don't forget to subscribe! Stay Classy!!

Another option is an R180 from a modern Subaru WRX STI which are also much stronger than the stock Datsun R180. You can get it with a Torsen or clutch style LSD and a choice of 3.9 or 3.54 ratios depending on the year. The spline count on the output flanges is different, so you will need to get new ones which are available from a number of sources. You also have to swap the input yoke from your stock R180 to mate up to the Datsun driveshaft. Mounting is exactly the same as the outer case is identical to the stock diff.

      What year? Subaru STI R180?

NDM, I was in the same boat. I have a 1972 240Z 3.0 stroker in need of a new diff. I have a 300zxt R200 3.7 LSD diff I thought I was going to put in. But after researching I realized It was too much diff and pain in the ass to make work. I'm going the Subaru WRX STI R180 3.54 Torsen LSD route. Much easier and will work great, so I here. Like the previous comment, Parts are readily available. Good Luck with your build. Thanks for your video, it helped me make a rational decision for a change.

Word of advice don’t buy an OBX diff. I bought mine for $300 and it cost $1300 for a shop to fix it. It had stripped bolts on a brand new one, and casing was 30 thousands off balance.
I could have spent 2k and gotten a true high performance dif :/

Why not go r180 or even getting an s12 solid rear suspension to hook up? If you want to feel the wrath of torque go with a r180 or a solid hf37, if you want to cruise fast go with the r200. Its really what floats your boat man, I just love the feeling of the torque from the slightly smaller gear ratio.

A pretty well priced option is a OBX helical differentail and 300zxt axles.. Fits in the r200 case and gives you CV style axels with a simple companion flange adapter to fit the stub shafts.

@Darius Thomas I bought mine second hand from someone who pieced it together. It consisted of companion flange adapters from modern Motorsport 300zxt (not 280zxt, I was misinformed) and the OBX differentail. You would likely have to get those all separately

@Darius Thomas I believe so, but I didn't buy the parts directly from them so idk

I understand why you chose this route with your build, but when you were researching your options with swapping out internals did you happen to run across any information regarding swapping out internals from a r200 short nose into the s30’s r200 long nose?
My situation and application has me going this route simply because I have a kaaz s13 2way already however I have run across vague information regarding this swap. Just wanted to know if you’ve come across anything along this line?

Does anyone know if a 240sx lsd will work, found one for 150$

IIRC the 240sx diff is an R160, just like the old one in this video.
