Correct me if I'm wrong: You don't necessarily need a JR pass if your there for five days mostly Tokyo. Also you can do without the Suica card and just use cash of your credit card, yes?
Yes, you dont need the jr pass if you are only going to be in tokyo but the suica card is highly recommended as it means you dont have to buy individual tickets each time you want to use the subway. Despite japan being a high tech country, many places do not take credit cards hence having some cash on hand is always recommended.
Hello. I have both Pasmo and Suica loaded in my Apple Wallet on my iPhone. Should I remove one and just keep one on my iPhone? How does the subway reader know which card to deduct the subway fee from? I'm afraid that when I tap my iPhone on the subway reader to enter the subway, the gate may go up because I have both in my Apple wallet. Please answer if you know the answer.
Hi Mary, according to Apple, the first card that you add to your Apple Wallet will be set as the default card. Any subsequent cards you add can also be set as the default card but you will have to do this manually. Only the first card you add, whether Suica or Pasmo, will be automatically charged when you tap. Hope this clears it up!
Great video, thank you! 😊 I'm curious for the iPhone Suica - if you don't have a Mastercard or Amex to use, is it possible to activate it with cash at the machines in the station? I know you are able to place your phone on the machine and load using cash like a normal physical card, but I haven't heard of someone doing this if they didn't already have the Suica digital card "activated" before going to load.
thanks to your question I learned something new today! Indeed you can recharge your Apple Suica by using Cash (in Japanese Yen). The machines as you mentioned are found in major subway stations and you just place your device on it, select the amount you want to charge then insert the bills into the machine. You can place your iPhone or Apple Watch on the reader and the card will be recharged. I think i will make a quick guide on this as many people have come to me for help since they only have Visa cards.
Arigato. I am planning on purchasing a Japanese kitchen knife from Asakura. When I leave from Haneda, I can pack the knife in my check in luggage correct? I just show my purchase receipt at customs?
When i bought my kitchen knife from japan, there were no questions asked as i had placed it in my check in luggage but i was asked for the receipt when i landed in my home country, because they saw it when they scanned my luggage.
Hi! I'm currently planning out my trip for December. Like you, I prefer Air BNBs to Hotels. I received some messages stating they needed a copy of my passport. Is this necessary? Just making sure before I do so!
Hi Brittany, before the covid pandemic, i had travelled to Japan numerous times and stayed at airbnbs without requiring to provide any type of identification. However, i did searched on google and it seems that the Japanese government had introduced new Airbnb laws where the Japanese owner must obtain the guest’s IDs and for foreigners this usually means their passport info. I totally get how you would feel uncomfortable about this so i would reply back to check that the document is being requested by the Host and not by any other company/person. I would also ask how your information will be kept and processed, then see if the Host is OK with you giving them a physical copy of your Passport upon check in. It might be a good idea to check with several different Airbnb hosts to see if they all ask for the same thing. I too am usually paranoid about who has my info especially when it comes to something as sensitive as passport info.
Thank you so much for your fast reply! I appreciate the research and information you've provided. I'll go ahead and ask my hosts if this is something that's "normal" and why some require it and others don't!@@excitedwandererjapan
Thanks for letting me know, it seems that due to many scammers imitating their app, they have decided to remove it and now the only official source is their main Visit Japan website. Here is the link: www.vjw.digital.go.jp/main/#/vjwplo001
