Your lockers are the wrong orientation at the nut. But yeah to me i had literally the same issue with the same MJ series guitar - turns out the dealer forgot to detatch the trem arm in shipping and it caused damage during! But when all sorted and a new one came, have to say it is a wonderful machine and plays superbly with no issues.
Every Jackson I've owned has had similar bizarre issues (since the 90s). They simply aren't checking these things before they go out the door. Weird buzzes, nut/bridge problems, rattling truss rods... they are a mess.
Same problem with the same guitar here! Got it yesterday and heard it immediately! Also the tremolo mounting studs are not drilled deep enough. The result is that the strings are too high to play the guitar comfortably. So this one goes directly back to the store. Damn shit!!!!!
These gotoh Floyds have a tiny hex that goes into the studs to lock it in place if you want to raise or lower the by the way. If you don’t unlock you might cause damage. I had one of these retrofitted into an older Jackson and that was all new to me. I personally love these trems. They are smoother than OFR.
I had a similar problem with a Dinky which I'd bought used. So don't know if that guitar had been like that out of the box or not. But I currently own one of the Indonesian SL2 Pro's and haven't had any problems with that so far.
Don't know if I can help someone, but what I did was simply take off the locking pieces on the nut, tighten the screws that secures the nut onto the neck, and the problems just magically went away somehow. I watched the video this uploader pasted and it seems that the reason is really because of small imperfections(screws didn't match/nut didn't lock tight enough)that the nut was moving and having the locking pieces rubbing against each other(because some people mention problem will go away when you remove the locking piece.) Though still, it puts a bit of a question mark about Jackson these days. They've been flamed quite a bit for quality control thing. I mean, the problem is so obvious that the person responsible for assembly/set up of the guitar would noticed it immediately during the process. And the fix is just so simple. So you really wonder what's going on behind the outrageous price tag. Other than that though. I pretty much quite like the guitar so far. They used some really good ebony supply that is jet black and free from brown streaks(on my copy). They invented something new on the shark fin inlays instead of the classic Jackson ones.(black binding over the Shark fin inlay on black fretboards.) Tone wise I would say it is about equal/in between the quality of an E-II and original ESP/USA Jackson, though still a bit less equavilent for the asking price. But that is just the recuring theme with semi-highend guitars these days. You don't get that magic tone with TOTL guitars that goes well into the $4000 range. But you can certainly get real close at $2000ish and with a little bit of tailoring they can sit just as well in a mix. And they're perfect for a gig if you don't want to bring your $4000 endgame axe and bang it all the time. I prefer this tone to many of my E-IIs because it seems Jackson's pick up placement is further away from the bridge than ESP and resulted in a much more "ballsier" tone in the mids. It really helps the guitar to sound huge for a lead/solo situaiton.
I think the MIJ Jackson is overpriced when you can get a better made comparable MIJ ESP M-II with no qc issues for less money. Jackson has really lost their way in the last 10+ years
I bought an Ibanez Premium for almost half retail from someone shortly after they got it a few years ago. Their selling was that they "needed money" but when I played it I noticed it was doing the exact same thing. Having used FRs since the 80s I knew what the problem was but when it happened the seller had a look of horror in their eyes when it did it. I acted like I didn't hear it and purchased the guitar. A quick tightening of the nut and all was good. Sometimes the screws just loosen or don't get tightened down properly. QC should easily catch this, I would also hope a reseller like Sweetwater would catch it as well... sad. I had been weighing one of those in white vs an E-II M2 or E-II Horizon II FR II... considering the QC issues I've personally encountered on some other Jacksons in recent years it looks like I'll be going with ESP.
@@MarbsMusic I have about 5 E-IIs, a couple of ESP origianl and USA Jackson in my collection. I'd say, If you're inbetween this guitar and any E-II just get which ever costs lower to you. They're virtually about same level. Only where new Jackson ask for a higher price tag brand new and in short supply. Though E-IIs are running short on supply as well since the factory are less productive these days. On a more detail level as I mentioned, Jackson guitars have a unique mid tone contour due to slight different bridge pickup position. But for majority of the people they will never be that particular unless you do recording all the time. Oh, and another point to note. My copy of MJ Jackson SL2 has one of the most thin neck I've touched among any Jackson. It almost felt like my beginner ibanez.
My Jackson Caribbean Indo soloist had this same thing, i also troubleshooted and heard it from the nut. It seems the new machined nuts have issues in the import guitars. My favorite Luthier filed it down, it was easy and was included in the setup fee (no extra charge). Now it is perfect. I wouldn't let something like that bother you If u have a knowledgeable luthier who doesn't charge for little things. Love your guitar, looks nice and I hope u got it fixed!
Yes it does and the 1996t is an amazing trem i prefer it over even the original ibanez edge and even over my german floyd rose original. At only $150 it's a steal,ad some titanium string blocks and you'll see what i mean. Rad!
This is a very common problem on another of floyd locking nuts, the main problem is that the two screws holding the nut to the neck are not drilled deep enough, easy fix but not acceptable
Gorgeous guitar. These were on my buy short-list. Reading through the comments I see others have had issues with QC as well. Disappointing and unacceptable at this price-point. The inlay rout in the 1st fret looks sloppy too. Lots of filler.
Thanks for sharing. I was looking at the white MJ Dinky. Was trying to decide between this and the Ibanez 652ahm. I owned the Ibanez 752ahm, and it was a nice axe. Just wasn't jiving with the 7 string though. The ibanez new is $500 less than the Dinky.

I have No issue with the Gotoh 1996T trem because it is as good as a OFR for me. That poping sound ma be the string slipping in the locking nut ever so slightly? Those locking pads are on sideways so the first thing i would have done is to turn them the right direction so the peak of the locking pad is running the same direction as the strings.
I don't get this logic, if the MJ SL2 would have MOP inlays and logo, then it would be identical to the USA Select SL2 that is going for $4500. It doesn't make any sense from a business perspective.
