Steve's PLA rations always remind me of my grandfather's service in the PLAAF years back; he was a political commissar with the rank of senior colonel within the airforce. My father told me about how he'd occasionally bring back army rations, which consisted of a large compressed biscuit wrapped in cloth. Luckily for my grandfather, the only real conflict of particular notice was the Sino-Vietnamese War of '79, so he got to enjoy hot meals for the most part. A short story to tell. My grandfather had known an old vet, one who had served in WWII. Some time during the 80s, my Grandfather, the vet, and I believe the chief of staff of the division had accompanied him onto an old biplane that apparently was in storage, essentially letting the vet relive his youth and enjoy the feeling of piloting a plane again. Anyways, midway through flight the engine in the biplane gave out, and the plane began to rapidly lose altitude. Unlike larger aircraft which can glide, a small biplane plunges downward quite fast. The crew onboard got lucky because they fell down over an evergreen forest. The old vet managed to wrestle control of the biplane and landed it square onto a pine tree, skewering it like a kebab. My grandfather and the two others then proceeded to wander the forest valley (known to locals as Toad's Ditch) for three hours until they stumbled upon a small town where they could get picked back up. The PLA rations are really cool Steve. My family has no strong military ties (my great grandparents on my father's side were poor northeastern Chinese farmers), and my father chose to go to college and pursue chemistry rather than join his parent in the air force. You show me things I'd never be able to see otherwise. Thanks.
Thank you Gary, your comment here greatly enriches this video with your insight and that cool story. I'm glad your grandfather and that old vet got outta that one alive! PLA Rations are always such a fascinating subject - I'm always on the hunt for 'em.
Steve! Compressed Hawthorn Cakes or 山楂片are treated as candy and appetizers for children due to being acidic and sweet in nature. One of my fav snacks growing up.
Just letting everyone know he posted on Reddit that he is working on 3 very expensive mres and he wanted to get them perfect and he also has a lot of pre recorded mres for the future so he'll be back no worries
I would recommend sending a bit of their MRE's and such, to a lab. I purchased some of their stuff several years ago that turned out to be positive for lead, the canned stuff was HIGHLY contaminated I used to work for a company where we would deal with hazmat, so testing their stuff was done for shits and giggles at first. It was rather surprising to have found that their stuff was contaminated with hard metals and other things I wasn't able to check for.
That's great. By the time the army could think about a coup it will already be too weak. I wouldn't be shocked if the CCP just poisoned its own people to keep them obedient. Especially lead poisoning does a number on your mental faculties.
I read an interesting thing recently about how while the PLA does do rations, they kind of get less focus because there's a much bigger emphasis on field kitchens and serving hot food fresh to soldiers (it apparently goes all the way back to when they'd use "plentiful food" as a recruitment tool).
Thanks for the insight. I wonder if it also ties into where they'd expect to be engaged in conflict, ie their own land and sea borders, rather than a different hemisphere.
@@CurtExplores Soldiers are not the only people needing MRE though. People working in perilous or mountainous regions with no village nearby, for example could use some MRE.
Now that's a minimalistic ration. Incidentally, this is exactly how I've imagined astronaut food to be like as a child. This 'food' will keep you going, but nothing more - and woe is you, if you don't like onion.

On the box it says "for amphibious operations", which probably explains why the food items are so minimalistic. Chinese military puts a lot of efforts into their field kitchen system, so the MREs are probably considered more like the last resort survival food, not something to be consumed regularly during deployment.
Yeah, but soldiers doing an amphibious operation (one of the most dangerous), aren't going to have field kitchens and are going to need some morale boosters.

Damn. Didn't plan on Steve dropping two new videos so soon. Now I gotta run out to the surplus store and buy an MRE so I can watch this later (while eating said MRE)
I don’t know why, but imo it’s kinda odd that the timing occurred when Steve opens the vacuum-sealed food sounds so… well put. It’s a sequence of sounds and actions that connect so perfectly and seamlessly it should belong to a movie. In those short seconds, there’s an initial setting, a conflict, a resolution and a conclusion. At the start, there’s the hiss made by the package, and the appraisal of its sound by Steve (setting). Then movement gets more aggressive, when he tightly grabs the vacuum-sealed contingent and performs a clean, but at the same time savage, complete ripping of it (conflict), sharply followed by the quick removal of its content, like a starving lioness butchering a zebra (resolution). This then paves the way for a conclusion, at which Steve, finally, ends the narrative by methodically identifying what type of nutritious agent has been discovered.
Nutrient rectangles aren't our favorites, but they get the job done... These rations are only used occasionally though because the PLA has specialized mobile kitchens and cooking squads that follow deployments. Soldiers are usually able to eat hot meals!

I would recommend sending a bit of their MRE's and such, to a lab.
I purchased some of their stuff several years ago that turned out to be positive for lead, the canned stuff was HIGHLY contaminated
I used to work for a company where we would deal with hazmat, so testing their stuff was done for shits and giggles at first.

Never trust any food products from China
I read an interesting thing recently about how while the PLA does do rations, they kind of get less focus because there's a much bigger emphasis on field kitchens and serving hot food fresh to soldiers (it apparently goes all the way back to when they'd use "plentiful food" as a recruitment tool).
That and the fact China are not currently at war anywhere so there isn't a huge need for field rations
in the civil war food wasn't exactly plentiful. being promised three warm bowls of rice every day must've been super appealing.

I've actually had one of those "space food" freeze dried foods. I've no clue if they're realistic at all to what astronauts eat. Tastes surprisingly good.
It’s also unambiguously made of people. At least other countries try and hide it.
Woe is you period. After eating one chances of self influenced injuries increases exponentially.
@@georgebrantley776 depends on the food. Some things don't immediately break apart in space, that's why Astronauts use tortillas instead of bread. In low gravity, breads and cakes would just come apart and gunk up equipment.
Astronauts have a lot of freeze dried food. Which is actually very nutrient rich. As long an you rehydrate it, then it tends to lend itself to a well balanced diet.

Right?
Haha! Entertainment!
