- An overnight in the stunning and remote Derryveagh Mountains of Donegal walking16km with 1,100m of ascent. A glorious weather window after a run of storms brought near calm and clear skies. A hard frost made for a slightly uncomfortable night in the Alpkit Hunka Bivy. Didn't meet another person over the 2 days in this peaceful and life affirming place.

Just Incredible Gerry, stunning footage of the herd of wild deer & Derryveagh Mountains pristine vista's in every direction. Thank's for sharing
Cheers Ashley, it is a beautiful place and feels pretty remote and deer are usually to be seen🦌
You have some of the most beautiful, scenic and spectacular collection of footage in Ireland my friend I live in Belfast so unfortunately I don't get to experience the wilderness like you but I hope one day I can. Your channel deserves so much more recognition and I hope you get it one day!!! Safe travels buddy
Cheers Jacqueline, there is so much to see in Ireland😊 The Belfast Hills are pretty cool too👍 Appreciate your very kind comment😊
Superb video.
You bring the Irish mountains to life in Eye watering colour.
Thank you.
Cheers George, though I just have to turn up and it is all there laid out before me😊
Ooo a bit of snow! Lovely! So beautiful over there! Ireland is such a beauty! 🙏😁🌱
There was only a little snow left from the previous week and we have had so little snow or even cold weather this winter. I have to agree that Ireland is a beauty😊
One of the best yet Gerry, absolutely stunning.
Kenny. really appreciate that👍 it was a pretty much perfect weather window and a fantastic trip😊
Thanks Gerry for sharing another great video! You nailed the weather window perfect☀️
Cheers Paul, it just fell perfectly from Friday to Sunday. It isn't often that happens, especially recently as there has just been no let up in the wind which isn't great for wild camping or filming.
Wonderful to see the hills and countryside in this part of Ireland! Beautifully filmed! Cold night, but a glorious morning! Loved the contrast of the water from the first day to the frozen morning. Beautiful! 👍☀️☀️🥾🥾
Cheers Jennifer, it is a beautiful part of Ireland👍 It was a cold night though it produced a beautiful star filled sky and I had that fantastic frozen morning before the strong early March sun☀ got to work😊
@@gerrymcveigh 👌
That was a great day to touch with amazing mountain views outdoor .
Thank you from Ireland to Sweden👍👍, it was a great day to be out in the mountains😊

Thank you 👍👍😊
Hey Gerry, how are you? Another well presented video with a fab look at this wonderful area. Been there a couple of times so really enjoyed seeing it again... Thank you for taking the time to film. Looking forward to your next one. ATB Tom
This is a fantastic landscape and the views from the top are breathtaking. I like the way you camp without a tent. The next morning is beautiful, but cold with frost. Thank you for sharing🙂👍
Bjorn, thank you👍 It is a fantastic landscape, one of my favourite places in Ireland😊 I love spending the night being able to look up at the stars, if the weather allows, and much prefer over a tent. It was cold during the night and I did feel it though if did give me that beautiful morning so all was good😊
Jeez Gerry you've a heart like a lion, i slept like a log after watching this video made me appreciate my nice warm bed.
No bother to you Gerry class video as always really enjoyed it.Keep them coming would watch these all day.
Stay safe Man....👍👍
It was a great trip and I certainly appreciated my nice warm bed the next evening😊
Wonderful! 😍 Thank you for sharing your camping experience! I enjoyed your video and support your channel with fully watching!! 👍🏻86

Great great landscape! Thx for sharing! 👍
Thank you Armin, it is a beautiful place 👍😊
L75 hello! my new friend that's pretty cool wild Camping bringing your comfortable bed gas stove hehe .thank you for explaining & bringing this beautiful Nature that God created have a wonderful day! Fully watch 100% God bless.
Thank you for watching👍 It was pretty cool wild camping in that beautiful nature😊
Absolutely stunning Gerry. What a spot. I can see why it's your favourite. Love the amount of deer you spotted. Such a remote beautiful area. Loved it. You making me want to do my 1st bivy. Haven't taken that plunge it
You are spoilt for choice up there. Great job man. 👏👏👏🙌
Cheers Martin, loads of deer around the Derryveaghs and usually see then on a visit, or hear them in the Autumn. It was nearly as remote as the top of Temple Hill - I too was looking across to busier summits like Errigal😊 The bivy is fantastic for a simpler and I think more connected experience out on the hills and is definitely the choice if the weather and midges allow it👍 You could camp in a different beautiful spot up there every week of the year😊
Well done Gerry, amazing scenery. Fair play in that cold!
Cheers Patrick, that part of Donegal always provides an amazing experience and the cold was worth putting up for to get the clear skies and views😊
Another cracking vid Gerry! I invested in a pair of Down booties for colder camps. They are a godsend for the toes.
Planning on my 1st bivvy camp on Bearnagh in a couple of weeks... fingers crossed 🤞 the weather is kind
Cheers Graeme, I might need to invest in a pair of those booties👍 Slieve Bearnagh would be an awesome place for a camp and I hope the weather is kind too👍😊
Hello! Thank you for the beautiful and relaxing tour. The nature scenery is amazing. Have a nice day 😊
Thank you for your lovely comment😊👍
Hello my friend watching here nice to meet you good afternoon too. Wow! Beautiful and amazing place perfect footages and nice filming I really enjoy watching thank you for sharing have a blessed day.
Thank You 😊👍
Ahh Gerry such a treat to see these wild places in my favourite county. Thanks so much for sharing this natural beauty. Beautifully filmed and presented. 👍
Cheers Richard, it was a real treat to be there with such good weather after it being so poor for so long. Definitely one of my favourite places in all of Ireland😊

It is a beautiful place, thank you for watching😊
Another great video Gerry, thanks for sharing your experience, brrrr could feel the cold 😊
Cheers Mick, I could definitely feel the cold❄😊 though it was worth it for the glorious weather and walking😊☀👣
One of my favourite places Gerry, I always love to get back to the Poison Glen. The view at 4.29 is one I must photograph.
Peter, one of my favout=rite places too👍 it is just totally stunning around the Poisoned Glen and along the mountains from Dooish to Slieve Snaght.
Amazing view and Watching all the way through the end … stay safe … thank you for sharing
Thank you for watching all the way to the end👍👍
Great hike. Thank you for sharing. Wishing you a wonderful day

Many thanks and I wish you every happiness and success too😊
stunning views ,thanks for sharing . Greetings from Northern Ireland
It was a beautiful couple of days to be in the mountains of Donegal☀😊Thank you for watching👍
Cracking stuff Gerry. Also made a trip out to An Port/Slievetooey and Glenlough to enjoy the weather in heavenly Donegal. You ain't wrong about that rare weather window, really incredible, especially now that we are back to getting battered and saturated by more Atlantic stormy weather. Brave to go up on Friday! On Saturday morning as was heading through Omagh I saw the temperature dip below -2.5, so can't imagine how cold it would be up high with a bit of wind chill. Still, cold march has it's positives, no midges or ticks to worry about is always nice.
Cheers😊 I had considered going for a wild camp on Slieve League but working in the morning wouldn't have left me enough time - another day😊 I am sure you had a fantastic experience around Slievetooey, a place that deserves regular visits👍 it was definitely cold on the summit of Crockfadda, though not sure just how cold❄ Great to be midge and tick free though not long left now until their return🦟
I can't really add more to what others have said here, Gerry. I just watched this on a big screen and the photography is magnificent. I can't imagine the amazing Donegal mountain landscape being portrayed any better than you did here. What a fantastic couple of days' weather for you. There are so many stills that could be pulled out and framed through the whole film. That low-sun shot of the Aghlas and Muckish with the sun catching the boulder in the foreground just made my jaw drop, and the wide angle of Errigal through to Muckish with the small lough in the valley below... but there are so many fantastic images. You're a tough soul (as it were) to be sleeping outdoors, up a mountain, in sub-zero....but you got your rewards in the experience that the video captures superbly. Thank you for a beautiful piece of work. I think MountainViews has its winner of the 2022 video award already :). I can't wait to get back across to Donegal now. Not sure about the open-air sleeping though ! By the way, you're spot on about the fact that you could still have the hills to yourself in good weather at a weekend in Ireland....which is very unlikely here in Scotland ,especially with the Munros. You need to make sure you get there early enough before all the parking spaces have gone in a lot of cases! Cheers again.
Cheers Jim for your very kind comments👍 I never cease to be amazed that I can spend 2 days in the mountains here and not meet another person, not complaining though😊 Donegal is a magical place, as is Scotland. If the weather is right I think a bivy is hard to beat, being able to stare up at that sky full of stars, feel the cold air on your face and just be more connected with what is around you😊
Wow, simply stunning views Gerry, but I expect nothing less from Donegal. We were in Dungloe on our last visit a couple of years ago before Covid. Letterfrack awaits us next year. I love your videos Pal and can`t wait to see your next one. Cheers Pal 😀
Cheers Martin, Donegal is simply stunning and I hope you have a great trip next year😊
Great captures of the Poisoned Glen and surrounding mountains Gerry 🤗 Oh to be able to move through the land like those deer - so graceful and agile. Some snow, sun and very little wind, wonderful to have had that weather window last weekend. That’s a beautiful lake with the sandy beach and what terrible news about the midges….nooooooo!! Please say it’s fake news 😲 Not that you are looking for suggestions, but I can highly recommend the Lixada Sundick Outdoors Down Booties - about £20, extremely lightweight and have afforded me warm feet this winter in the sleeping bag (to date)! A great Donegal adventure Gerry and lovely to see it 👍
Miriam, you know how beautiful this area is from your travels. It was a glorious weekend and too good to miss in terms of heading for a wild camp - I had been having serious withdrawal symptoms😊 I would love to camp at that sandy beach though I think the window is pretty much gone and the midges🦟 will have the place to themselves. I might look up those booties as it is my toes and fingers that need the protection. It was a great Donegal adventure and here is to more in the coming months for us both👍😊
@@gerrymcveigh I had those withdrawal symptoms too Gerry!! I managed two trips that weekend - Connemara on a day trip and then came back to Dublin and headed to Waterford the following day with the fold up bike and tent....I couldn't resist!! Took the camera but filming two trips in a row was something I hadn't done before - probably wont do it again as the camera became a bit of a chore rather than fun 🤦♀️ So disappointed to hear the midges will be back to haunt us soon..on reflection, some have to deal with a real life war around them. If midges are as bad as it gets for our camping trips - we'll manage!
Another great video Gerry. Perfect weather and amazing views. Beautiful place. You must be hard as nails though stayin out on that frozen rock. Good on ya.
Cheers😊👍 The weather window just came at the perfect time for me and it was pretty much perfect conditions - the light winds, clear sky and even the cold temperatures at night all made the trip. It is a beautiful place and much quieter than the other side of the valley with Errigal and Muckish. A good sleeping mat softens everything😊
THANK YOU for sharing this video
Thank you for watching and commenting😊
Absolutely stunning Gerry. You did well getting out while the weather was fine. The different shots of the deer were class. Your bivvy set up looked perfect. I could never trust the weather enough to just bring a bivvy bag. Do you bring a tarp incase it rains? I'll have to make my way up there someday and spend a few days rambling through the hills. Your footage as always is stunning, fair play Gerry. It was great to see you back out 👍
Jason, it is well worth a trip and is one of those places I keep going back to because of its beauty and isolation. I have a tarp though don't usually bring it. On occasion when I am not totally sure of the weather I would bring tent and bivy as the bivy is so light and small and then have the choice of what to use. It was great to be back out😊
Great video Gerry, I wild camped in poisoned glen a few years ago. That wee beach at the lough looks amazing
Cheers David, it is a brilliant place to walk or wild camp👍 That wee beach is definitely somewhere to return to, maybe with a deck chair and a midge net😊
Wonderful video, so enjoyable.
Ana, thank you for watching and your kind comment😊👍
Hello there. I'm glad to have checked out your channel. Beautiful capture of the sunset and sunrise! That's what I love about backpacking. The views from the cairn overlooking the mountains and that small lake is stunning! Great to get ideas of the trails in Ireland... Hoping to go there later this year :-) New sub from a fellow hiker.
Cheers fellow hiker😊 Totally agree it is about being out there to capture those moments. Lots of hiking here in Ireland for when you come😊 Subbed back👍
Great video yet again Gerry, a stunning place! I took a week off work last year to travel Donegal and it lashed rain, so I need to get back 😂. I just bought myself a pair of RAB Cirrus Boots for the cold feet, might be worth looking into for the cold nights in the bivvy 👍. All the best, John.
Cheers John, you definitely need to go back (in a week with no rain😊) I will look into some sort of cosier footwear for the bivy as I really do have cold toes/fingers👍
Great video Gerry. Plenty of decent info to take from it. There's a lake up there that isn't named on any maps but was referenced in an old fishing book published in the early 90's called Lough Na Sharragh. It's a little bit further south from Lough Mamm. I remember back in 1993 myself and two friends hiked up to it from eastern side up the steep slopes and trudged through some seriously boggy land that also had us up to our knees in it loads of times. The lough was rumoured to have been teeming with brown trout but we got nothing from it. It took us about 3 hours to get up there and about 2.5 hours back. One hell of a trek but really enjoyable. We tried a second time to reach the lough via Dunlewey but we were so unprepared we had to turn back. The folly of youth. I have the hike you just done earmarked for some time in April.
Cheers Chris, I have walked along Lough na Sharragh from Crocknasharragh Mtn on a previous trip and it is a beautifully isolated and remote place. That whole area is fantastic and it does take quite a bit of effort through the bog, though it is all worth it😊 I hope your upcoming trip is a good one😊
@@gerrymcveigh Noticed that Lough Na Sharagh is noted on the maps these days. 😁
Nice sharing my friend and sending my support.
Thank You👍
Looked like a seriously epic location and really impressed with your rucksack size considering it's winter
Donegal is epic and the Derryveagh Mountains even more epic😊 I think the rucsac is 48litres and still had plenty of room inside👍
Thanks for sharing magnificent trips
it is a pleasure to go on these trips and share them, thank you for watching👍👍
Was absolutely expecting a video from yourself considering the lovely weekend we all had , and you certainly didn’t disappoint!! Midges 😳 NOOOO , my life’s bane 🤦♂️ certainly another lovely sign of Spring is the frog spawn , love watching the little tadpoles in their little ponds !! Beautiful area Gerry , you captured it beautifully and really portrayed a feel and vibe to the place as if we were there with you . A very enjoyable hike and bivvy , a chilly one for sure . PS you didn’t see a drone on the church ruin by any chance? Asking for a friend 😁🤣 ATVB Colin
Cheers Colin, couldn't resist it after so many weeks of poor weather. Yep the midges are staritng to return, not much cold this winter to keep their numbers down I think. It is a brilliant area for walking and wild camping and one that I have been visiting for many years, mostly having the hills to myself on all those trips. I didn't happen to see that lost drone though I am sure your friend is doing fine with the replacement😊
Gerry I've came to the conclusion, you could sleep on a washing line 😴 🤣 Another fantastic video, such views and wildlife ya can't get much better than that 👏
ATB
Stuart
Cheers Stuart, that sleep mat is great and provides comfort and warmth even when on bare rock, which was by far the best place to bivy up there. I don't think I could have gotten much better than that😊
I feel it in my fingers, I feel it in my toes :) the cold is always round me, everywhere I go :) ... Great video Gerry lol you're a bivy legend :)
Cheer Merky👍 I now have a pair of down booties so hopefully wont be feeling it in my toes😊
You must have ⚽⚽ of steel to even contemplate bivvying at this time of year 😆 Seriously impressed 💪
I've only made it up there the once but just for lunch before returning to the car. You had the perfect day and it's made me hunger for a return trip. Thanks for sharing 👌🙂
Cheers Niall, I think it was balls of ice by the end of the night❄😊 It wasn't too bad with a good sleep mat and sleeping bag and wearing all my clothes, including gloves and the 2 pairs of socks😊 I am looking forward to the longer and warmer evenings though👍
"Stunnin' stuff" for sure Gerry. Deer, frogs, midges and "tuna" all in a freezer 🥶. I see you got rid of the baby food. Ya couldn't be doin' with that in those temperatures, and the price of it 🤣. A brilliant video Gerry 👍!!
The baby food was a one off purchase and to be honest the noodles and tuna are cheaper, more filling and taste better👍😊 Even though it was cold it is great to see the longer evenings and Spring starting to appear after the rubbish Winter we have had to endure. Thanks for watching😊
@@gerrymcveigh I hope to back out soon. A knee problem and COVID have been conspiring against me. I need to get my act together very soon!!
All the best on your recovery👍
Amazing views, thanks for sharing. Enjoyed the video 👍
Cheers, it was a great weekend and the views were pretty cool. It is really only with that northly wind that it all comes into sharp focus😊
That was just absolutely fantastic!!
Cheers John, it was great trip😊 I had been waiting weeks for the weather to calm down and it made for a fantastic couple of days👍
I wonder what happened to the derelict church seen right at the start Gerry? The structure looks sound. It looks as if there might have been a fire at one time.
You certainly got a great weather window! And you had the place to yourself! You are the man Gerry!
Tom, here is some more info: www.welovedonegal.com/old-church-dunlewey-poisoned-glen.html
I had it good with the weather, the landscape and the isolation😊
Very nice video Gerry. You may not be aware but I took a stroll with you through the Derryveagh Mountains. I skipped the over night as it looked a wee bit chilly. As always, beautiful views, crisp images and subtle editing👍😁.
Cheers Aidan, I hope you had a great trip. It was a beautiful weekend weather wise, with great views in the northly air.
Great video. I like how you keep things simple, using Lake water and sleeping beneath the stars..well done 👏
Cheers Paul, simple is best for me and there is nothing like sleeping under the stars⭐️ in a bivy😊
Great video gerry, keep them coming. Don't suppose you want to do a bag dump video ( what you carry on an overnight wild camp)??
Cheers Adrian and thank you for watching and commenting. I don't carry that much in my bag though could try and mention it in a future video, though it is hard enough to keep the length down below 30 minutes😊
@@gerrymcveigh good man gerry. I was hoping to take up wild camping and was just wondering what gear to use.
This area looks awesome. Have explored the Sperrins quite a bit and will be giving the Derryveagh mountains a visit very soon. Thanks for the videos. :-)
Mike, definitely worth the travel. The Sperrins are grand though they lack the more dramatic found in the Derryveaghs.
@@gerrymcveigh I agree, my sister in law was around the Derryveagh mountains this weekend and the scenery is awesome looking.
Gerry I'm in love
I have been having a love affair with the Derryveaghs for many years :-)
😎❤️
Cheers😊👍
Absolutely fantastic hike and video Gerry. Glad you got the weather for it. One day I shall conquer the poisoned Glen without rain ;-) ps missed your traditional closing map at the end as I tend to do some of your routes. What was the name of the lough on the devlin river? I’m in the blue stacks next week and got a feeling it maybe a wet one! Fingers crossed!
Cheers Pat, it was fantastic weather and there hasn't been much of that over the last few months. Viewranger has now gone and I used Outdoor Active for the first time on this trip and am still getting used to it, it seems to put my walking into a straight line so that is something I am going to have to figure out.The lough with the stunning beach was Lough Agannive. Hope you have a good trip to the Bluestacks😊
@@gerrymcveigh Thanks Gerry. I thought it was Agannive. Strangely I’ve saw a couple of references to the same Lough name just across the road opposite Errigals north side. Looks like some spot but unfortunately the midges will be moving in soon as you say!
I shall be plotting with outdooractive this weekend. All going well it will not be in straight lines ;-)
@@gerrymcveigh ps I too just had the same problem with outdoor active so it reminded me of your post. If you click on the little icon that looks like a small magnet and shaped like a “C” it will allow you to plot freely. Hope that works for you! The icon is originally called “trail network” but will change to “ free routing” once you click.
Have clicked on it and hopefully that will records all the twists and turns😊
nice spot to camping. i like it, stay connected with me :)
Thank you, it was a beautiful camp spot😊👍
New Video! Valuable footage! Smooth and entertaining! I stayed up watching. Did you use the ending video promo from utube at the end
Thank you for watching👍 I don't use the ending promo.
Nemmuh jukok esongai...
derryveagh is gods country :)
Cheers Marty, I would agree with you 100%😊
Fantastic video Gerry. Wee question if you don't mind. Is your mat the SynMat 7cm?
Cheers Shane👍 It is the 7cm, very comfy and a great insulator💤
I need a new sleep mat. Since I hit the 40's I feel the cold more camping...lol
Is it the one with the intergraded pump?
It is 👍
It is👍
Gerry, we're planning a hike around Derryveagh in a couple of weeks time and was wondering what it's like setting up a tent (small two man Vango) near Slieve Snaght. More specifically what's it like at the two lakes either side of Slieve Snaght? The ground looks very rocky so not sure tent pegs would be suitable. What do you reckon. Thanks.
Mike, the area around Lough Slieve Snaght is pretty wet and rocky though I have camped there before and Miriam Kennedy has a video of a wild camp there if you check out her channel. The lough in the col to the west is pretty wet from memory. Lough Agannive a bit further NW has a superb beach with stunning views to the mountain tops, though may be midge prone in calm conditions. There are a couple of loughs on the top of neighbouring Drumnaliffernn Mountain where wild camping would be possible. Plenty of choice😊
@@gerrymcveigh Gerry, you're a legend... thanks a million.
@@WalkTalkBrew As Gerry says Drumnaliffernn Mountain has a few good loughs that are quite well drained and offer good shelter, was able to get two tents there on flattish tussocky ground with room for one or two more. It had rained heavily earlier but the ground was not too bad, just make sure you bring a groundsheet just in case. Just be prepared for a lot of condensation (and midges) that tends to get trapped in the more sheltered loughs. Generally the Derryveagh mountains are super wet lower down but dry out a good bit when you get higher. Slieve Snaght top itself has some flattish areas and water sources which look great if you can get a day without the high winds.
@@iwasapirateonce1639 thanks for the advice, it's great getting knowledge from others... we've got a few ideas now, but you can never tell until you get on the ground yourself.
@@WalkTalkBrew No worries at all, been in the same position and found Gerry's videos invaluable, not just for planning routes but picking out wild camp locations. That day in the Derryveagh mountains was quite worried cause it was chucking it down, rivers were flowing everywhere and the wind was howling, had no idea where I was going to camp, luckily from watching Gerry's previous trip + google satellite maps had a hunch of a few locations and a couple turned out suitable.
