    Anyone who wants to get to know Batman better, but doesn't want to read through piles of his inconsistent 80-year-old history, I'd advice to start reading him from the amazing Legends of the Dark Knight series, which started in the 1989 and exists as a separate continuity, which is not bonded to the main contunity of DC and rather exists in a more consistent, grounded world with no retcons, crossovers, and such. It's an amazing series. My favorite Batman series of all time. I enjoyed it more than his main solo series.

      This is a way better recomendation than the video list. Legends of the dark knight is brilliant. The video list is really weird. I would not recomend the court of owls to new readers, for instance. Strange aparitions is also a strange place to start.

If you are a full on Batman fan before reading the comics (I was, loved the animated movies, series, regular films, etc...) DKR actually isn't the best for new readers. Mostly because it's a deconstruction and writes Batman a bit differently than how he really is. It's really good, but it shouldn't be anyone's first

    • @ccooddyy4765
      @ccooddyy4765 5 років тому +23

      @CJ Phoenix I would respectfully disagree with your opinion. Though DKR is a good Batman story, it still represents Batman differently. This should never be how a beginner perceives Batman. He should not be expected as this dark, gritty, and violent hero.
      This is why the DCEU fails to depict Batman correctly. He is only based from the DKR series and nothing else. Batman: The Animated Series, on the other hand, delivers what makes Batman Batman without driving the story with DKR influence.

      I must agree, DKR is a great read once you get to know Batman a bit better. The first batman comics I ever got was Year one, DKR and The Dark Knight strikes again. The DKR confused me and I didn't realise how good a book it was until I re-read it many years later having read a few other comics.

    • @nikkohewitt8848
      @nikkohewitt8848 5 років тому +4

      @CJ Phoenix I'm not saying it's a hard to understand story or anything, it's just that if it's someone's first comic, that'll be your first impression of who is in comics, which isn't totally accurate. It's not a bad story at all, but it shouldn't be someone's first.

  • @dillonleonard7629

    Hush one of the best Batman story lines to introduce new readers into the comics. It shows Batman at the absolute hight if his game as well as introducing a fantastic new villain. It hits on Batman's origins and the origins of many of his allies and foes. It's my go to story for getting new people into comics. Jeph Loeb is a fantastic writer for Batman and Jim Lee's art is superb, this is in my opinion Batman done perfectly.

More mystery and conspiracy as the plot thickens to create a more compelling tone with a combination of he overall tone and style of the series drawn into the series.

    The Long Halloween is not where the triumvirate of Batman- Dent - Gordon was first depicted post Crisis.
    That goes to the Batman Annual of 1990. “In the Eye of the Beholder”. Written by O’Neill, Art by a young up and coming Chris Sprouse.
    As a deconstruction of Dent, it’s a much, much better take than The Long Halloween.
    Also TLH presents Batman as a pretty bad detective (with, among other things,Calendar Man figuring out the identity of Holiday before Batman so that Loeb could copy Hannibal Lector from Silence of the Lambs?). So I don’t get how TLH could ever be on this list.

    This story arc by Jim Lee and Jeph Loeb requires no prior knowledge of the character and is a complete self-contained story serving as a crash course of Who's Who in Batman's world and offers up a decent enough mystery at the same time.

    I will say reading the earliest story of Batman is a test in patience and testing your own eyes. It is worth it to see how it all started, but because of continuity reboots it suffers from a lot of useless information, if you enjoy it as is thats great, but resetting too much can be an issue.

    The Scott Snyder run volumes 1-10 starting with Court of Owls is the best Batman series I’ve ever read. Consistently amazing, and it’s like watching a movie the whole time. Scott Snyder’s Black Mirror was amazing too. Dark Knight Returns was alright to me, but I didn’t really like the mutant gang and the Batman gang. They got on my nerves. And then the sequel, The Dark Knight Strikes Again is the worst thing I’ve ever read. 🤢
