  • He’s one of the toughest players to don the black jersey and during his time as an All Black, Wayne ‘Buck’ Shelford, of Ngāpuhi descent created a legacy that lasts to this day.
His actions on the field left a mark on every game he played and during his time as captain of the All Blacks, the team were undefeated for 19 games from 1987 - 1990. He's the only Captain at present that can claim that title.
One of Wayne’s greatest achievements during his time as an All Black was the vital role he played in the revival of the All Blacks haka which is now performed in all matches, and has spread through all of the franchises including the Black Ferns, New Zealand Māori and male and female sevens teams.
Years on from his playing days, Buck Shelford continues to have a strong impact on the rugby world, particularly the presence of Maori as players, coaches, staff and governance. He’s overcome a number of hurdles throughout the years and come through it all stronger than ever. His name will be known for a long time and wherever you go in the world, there’ll always be someone who wants to ‘Bring Back Buck’.
    This is his story.
