  • “Haka and hula are a taonga.”
The Manning brothers, Te Awa and Raukawa, are of Māori and Kanaka Maoli (Hawaiian) ancestry and were both born in Hawai’i. They speak three languages: Māori, Hawai’ian, and English, and are the first whānau to represent Hawai’i in both hula and Māori haka.
In April this year, they performed on the biggest hula stage in the world, the Merrie Monarch festival, which is said to mirror Te Matatini. They had the privilege of performing with the children of the original contingency, Awhina i te Kaupapa, from almost 30 years ago.
The Merrie Monarch Festival honours the legacy of King David Kalākaua, who inspired the protection and growth of native traditions, language, and arts.

Quite sad at how short this video is but in that small amount of time you learn so much! I just wanted a nohi especially from the perspective of these tuakana and teina explaining their experiences as Kanaka Maoli+Maaori living in Hawai'i. I love it! Nga mihi nunui mo teenei whakaaturanga
