Great vid! While doing research i read from many sources that i shouldnt use niacinamide with glycolic acid unless they were 30 minutes apart, is that not true?
No, it's not true unless you have pure Niacinamide Powder and mix it with Glycolic Acid in the palm of your hand. But that does not count for any serum. Formulations are stable, and therefore they cannot interact when applied to the skin. So you can use them right after another. You may experience issues because you exfoliated the skin, but it can happen with any other serum you use after Glycolic Acid; it simply means that the active ingredient is too high for the skin to handle. If you do not use Glycolic Acid before, the dead skin cells protect it so that it absorbs slower.
I have been watching your videos all day and have learned so much! Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge with us :) I have been using Pixi Glow Tonic for years at least 1 time a day, I just purchased the Ordinary Glycolic Acid to increase the strength by just a little bit. I am 52 and just started using the Avene 0.1% Retrinal Creme, would I able to use this in this skincare routine? I really appreciate your help, thank you so much.
Well, since you have already used the Glycolic Acid for such a long time, it's unlikely to become an issue since your skin is well adjusted to it. Still, you are new to retinol, and it's always advised to start slowly and build up a tolerance. So my recommendation would be to use it 2-3 times a week and do that for a few weeks and after that increase, it if needed and tolerated 😀 Ultimately, you need to experiment a bit to see what works best for you.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet Thank you so much for your reply! I will follow your recommendation and start slowly with the Retinal. But, is it ok to use the other things that u used in this skincare routine-Hyaluronic Acid, Niacinamide with the addition of the Retinal? Thanks again!!!
Hi there! Would I be able to use any of the cerave cleansers with these routines as I have all the rest of the products but not the, the ordinary squalane cleanser? I find both the SA cleanser and the foam cleanser work well for my skin so would like to keep these if possible.
No, you do not need to wear sunscreen when inside the house. www.abc.net.au/everyday/do-you-need-sunscreen-even-when-inside/12201634 And keep in mind that it is Australia where the sun is powerful. So when living in Europe, the US etc., the risk is next to 0.
As long as it is not an exfoliant, such as AHA (Glycolic, Lactic, or Mandelic Acid) or BHA (Salicylic Acid), it is safe to use. Using those types of exfoliants can potentially lead to skin irritation.
You can use it in the AM when not using Glycolic Acid, or alternate between your SA cleanser and Glycolic Acid. It's best to use a non-exfoliating acid cleanser suitable for your skin type when using Glycolic Acid.
Hello, if I use the squalane cleanser, glycolic acid 7%, hyaluronic acid 2%, and then niacinamide, where in this routine do I use Azelaic acid suspension?
Use it when you're not using Glycolic Acid. So, this can be in the AM or when you're not using Glycolic Acid in the PM. See here: ua-cam.com/video/oRYp_RzqOXk/v-deo.htmlsi=4LwrCP5S9GqWbi4Z and here: ua-cam.com/video/NE3j3LPcaGE/v-deo.htmlsi=PpB2Bc7fVsPrTEPK
Hi sorry I can ask u I hve oily skin which one for my good for my skin I already use niacinamide but only sometimes and on weekly one or two time I used the AhA BHA and I can't use day cream and sunscreen after niacinamide or not please thank u love u video
Yes, you can use a day cream or sunscreen after Niacinamide. (During daytime) And if you have oily skin, I recommend using something light. If you want something that keeps your matt during the day, use a mattifying moisturizer such as La Roche Posay Effaclar Mat Mattifying Moisturizer for Oily Skin. And for sunscreen, I recommend using a light lotion, for example, Paula's Choice youth extending daily hydrating fluid.

I wash my face with Cerave salicylic acid cleanser, and use the Cerave Pm moisturizer. Please give me advice, my skin is begging. It both dry and oily and breaking out. You are the god of skincare i am in much need of advice!
Hey! :) What CeraVe Salicylic Acid Cleanser do you use? The SA Renewing/Smoothing or Acne Control? I shared AM and PM routines in this video if you have bought TO Glycolic Acid, HA and Niacinamide. So, this should help you to come up with a routine. Keep the frequency in mind primarily for Glycolic Acid.
@@isabellasanchez9216 I recommend using a non-exfoliating acid cleanser when using Glycolic Acid. So, alternate between the Salicylic Acid Cleanser and a Regular/Gentle Cleanser :)
So extremely curious. With Hyaluronic acid serum it is recommended to use it on damp face for pure effectiveness . Whereas with glycolic acid it’s best used on dry face to avoid irritation. So how can I make use of both methods of application and receive the best results?
No, it does not matter if you use Hyaluronic acid on dry or on damp skin; it will have the same efficacy. Still, when you use products on "damp" skin, they tend to penetrate better into the skin. Damp skin refers to when your skin has absorbed some water but has been dried off on the surface. It doesn't look much different on the surface alone than dry skin. And after washing your face, your skin remains damp for about 30 minutes. So if you have a Glycolic Acid or generally an exfoliating acid, you want to avoid this since it has small molecules that may irritate the skin more when it is damp. Now, practically, it is only a concern for some people with sensitive skin or if your skin barrier is already damaged. Cleanse face Take a towel and remove the water drops from the skin surface Apply Hyaluronic Acid or Glycolic Acid If you use both, use Glycolic Acid first and layer Hyaluronic Acid on top.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet Thanks so much for getting back to me ❤ How about adding snail mucin into my skincare routine. I'm also aware it's best applied on damp skin. Can I use it in the same routine with glycolic acid?

Hey can we only use the hyluronic acid 2% +B5 and not the niacinamide 10% + zinc 1% ? And thank you so much for your help i was confused for my whole life. Is the Nivea sunscreen effective on the skin?
I wouldn't mix them because TO Ascorbic Acid + Alpha Arbutin serum is water-free. However, you can layer them: use your HA serum first and then apply the other one on top.
Hey! :) Thank you! :) You would need to rewash your face and reapply your SPF and makeup to do it properly. Or look into SPF powders that you can apply on top of your makeup. However, if you aren't that much in the sun, the SPF that you applied in the morning should last you the entire day.

Hey Wendy! :) The Vitamin C Serum that you have includes a Vitamin C Derivative so you can use it with your Niacinamide! :) How often you can use your exfoliant (BHA) depends on your skin. Some people can use it daily whereas others prefer to use it every other day. No, it's not incorrect. But in this case, it does not make much sense since you are using the exfoliant. The AHA (Glycolic Acid) can loosen the dead skin cells as well as helps it to increase the Hyaluronic Acid. So when using it before, the Hyaluronic Acid (Sodium Hyaluronate) product that you use afterwards can absorb even better into the skin. Hyaluronic Acid also has this ability, but it can not exfoliate the skin; therefore, you will use it the other way around. However, with those leave on exfoliants, it is very tricky, and I am constantly questioning it since I do not know how long it needs to do this, and there is not really a reliable source online. I assume that you will get the best results when using a cleanser with Glycolic Acid with a low pH; leave that one for a couple of minutes and rinse it off and layer your hyaluronic acid product on top so that it can already remove the dead skin cells. In any case, it is best to use it before since it removes the build-up of the dead skin cells.
If you are using them together and you are new to all of these products, then this could certainly happen. Therefore, it is generally suggested to start slowly with these products. So, you could use niacinamide and hyaluronic acid in your AM routine and glycolic acid and moisturizer in your evening routine. But also, it is important to adjust the frequency of your glycolic acid. Start by using it every other day and then gradually increase the frequency if tolerated and needed.
Thank you so much, I actually use the 2% BHA liquid exfoliant from Paula's Choice because the toner from the ordinairy gave me a breakout. Do I still need to skip the toner on the days with retinol?
Hi can I use niacinamide and hyaluronic acid in the morning every day, and retinol at one night and bha in other night (both 1 time per week because I’m going to start)? Do you think that is a good starting routine on serums for AM and PM?
Is it normal to have breakouts during the 1st-2nd week of using the products? I’m currently using the ordinary set and glycolic acid. Using the masque during Tuesdays and fridays, while the glycolic acid during mon-wed-thurs-sat as my PM routine.
It could be purging because your skin is new to all those products. However, depending on how much you use each product and how often you use Glycolic Acid, this may also lead to irritation. Have you been using Glycolic Acid that often from the very beginning?
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet I used glycolic twice only for the 1st week, then 3x for the 2nd week. Currently on my 3rd week with the schedule I just stated. Maybe I should go back to twice/week just to ease the breakouts?
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet the 3rd week actually. The breakout is where I have my acne before using the products, which is in my forehead. Good thing that no acne appeared on other parts of my face. Hello! I'm 21 years old. I've pigmented area around my lips. I want to know which will be better for removing pigmentation. Is it glycolic acid toner or Alpha arbutin serum?
Hi Melissa! Can you pls tell me if my routine is correct 😁 AM Cleanse, hyaluronic acid, alpha Arbutin, and I mix ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate with moisturizer and sometimes sunscreen. Depends on the weather. I live in Denmark, so we don’t have a good weather everyday 😅 Pm Cleanse, glycolic acid ( 2x a week) niacinamide, resveratrol and retinol 0.2 squalane and I mix it with moisturizer. I hope you can help me! I’m new to using all these stuff. I normally just use a serum and a moisturizer. Hope you continue helping other people 🤍 Thanks in advance 😊
Hello Michelle :) The routine/order is correct, but for what are you using those products? Regarding sunscreen, it really depends on what you want to achieve. I know that it isn't widespread here in Europe to wear it; however, I highly recommend using it when battling dark spots or other pigmentation issues. It also can help to prevent it. But SPF 15+ may be enough when not being outside for several hours. 😉
Thanks for the quick reply 😊🤍 I’m using them for acne scars. My T zone is very oily but my cheeks are dry/dull. I watched some videos and I just picked those serums that I think my skin would thank me for. Is it ok to use them? I noticed that on my cheek area I have small dry patches, not that bad. It’s probably from those things I’m using. I never had them before.
@@michellemandia7435 Hm. If you only have acne scars and a bit of dull-looking skin, you do not need to use that many products. Probably the vitamin c, retinol and/or azelaic acid would be enough. But apart from that, you can try the routine you have. And yes, the patches can come from a product you are using, but it is challenging to tell which one it is since you are using so many 😞 And you probably started them all at once, right? 🤔
@@michellemandia7435 Over time you will notice what will work for your skin and what doesn't. Keeping the routine as simple a possible but yet effective is the key! :)
That's difficult because you should avoid using multiple acids in the same routine. After all, that may lead to irritation over time. But what you can do is alternate with Glycolic Acid. So one day, you use lactic acid, the other day salicylic acid etc. Or lets say that would be my recommendation :)
Nothing you can also do that :) The Ordinary recommends the following: "Generally, we recommend applying water-based solutions first, followed by oil formulations, and finally cream/suspension formulas. If you have more than one water-based serum, you can apply based on the priority of your concern (the product that targets the most important concern should go first)." From my experience and from what I have read in my books, Hyaluronic Acid can help to increase the absorption of the products that follow; therefore, I think it's best to use it before. But generally, there isn't any research about it, so there isn't any right or wrong.
Hi melissa! I'm still battling with "maskne" right now, can I use the glycolic acid, niacinamide, moisturizer and sunscreen(AM) at AM and PM everyday until my acne heals and dries?
@@air.ytchannel20 you may not need to use a toner at all. Benzoyl Peroxide should do a pretty good job. But if so use a soothing and hydrating toner that is suitable for your skin type and needs.
Hm, no hyperpigmentation is not the issue. It could happen with Glycolic Acid peels in very high strengths, but generally, no. Still, the issue is that when used too often, you can over-exfoliate the skin, which can lead to stinging or burning, so basically, a damaged skin barrier over time. Therefore, use it 2-3 times a week in your evening skincare routine.
technically yes, practically, the SA cleanser formulation is drying, and therefore it often causes sensitivities on the skin, especially when layering an AHA like Glycolic Acid afterward.
Hey! Can you please tell me if I can use the following PM routine: Cetaphil foaming cleanser Glycolic acid Niacinamide Alpha arbutin Hyaluronic acid *all products apart from the cleanser are by The Ordinary
yes, that's okay :) Edit: Frequency Glycolic Acid: How often you use it will depend on how well your skin tolerates it. Begin with 2-3 times per week. Then, as the skin builds tolerance, increase to every other day or daily as needed (and tolerated).
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet Okay so how long do I wait for the lactic acid to absorb until I move on to adding hyaluronic acid & niacinimide? & Since I am starting out with these products, should I just use lactic acid 2 times a week?
@@Scarlett-w3p I would recommend waiting for 1-2 minutes. Generally, lactic acid is well tolerated, so you may be able to use it daily, especially if you have the 5% solution.

Hey! :) Overall the routine looks good😊 Keep an eye on the frequency of Glycolic Acid. If sensitivity occurs, give your skin a break and use it less often.
And how often you use a Salicylic Acid product will depend on your personal tolerance for these products. Start with 2-3 times per week and adjust the frequency according to your skin's response. Niacinamide can be used daily. And yes you can use it after Salicylic Acid.

Hello, Exfoliating acids are generally used before Hyaluronic Acid (serum). But if you only use it on your nose it may not matter that much. Also, some toners contain Hyaluronic Acid, but they are generally used before since they usually have a smaller molecular size of Hyaluronic Acid or Sodium Hyaluronate to penetrate the skin. They do not tend to sit on top of the skin surface as most Hyaluronic Acid serums do. And not sure if you need to use the moisturizer in the morning if you have an excellent hydrating sunscreen or moisturizer with SPF. A great affordable sunscreen would be COSRX Aloe Soothing Sun Cream. And do not overuse Glycolic Acid; not sure if you need it at all. Maybe once or twice a week is enough for your age. You do not have that much build-up of dead skin cells, and you can easily over exfoliate your skin. So be careful.

@@HaziAutos No, it's not necessary to use a serum at night with Glycolic Acid toning solution. Yes, Amino Acids hydrate the skin so you are fine to use them after Glycolic Acid.
This was helpful. Thank you, lovely !
Glad it was helpful!🥰
Great explanation ❤

Hm, I never tried any of their products, but also they are not available in my country.
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet thanks for replying

Hi melissa, can i use other Toner after glycolic such as SKII Petera and Lotion?
As long as it is not an exfoliant, such as AHA (Glycolic, Lactic, or Mandelic Acid) or BHA (Salicylic Acid), it is safe to use. Using those types of exfoliants can potentially lead to skin irritation.

Hi thanks for advice. I have moles on my neck and under arms. Can I use Ordinary acid on it.
Not sure about that; probably best to seek advice from a local doctor.
Can i use glycolic acid toner and cerave blemish control gel together??
That is too much and will become irritating over time. So if you want to use both use them on different days.
Cleanse face
Take a towel and remove the water drops from the skin surface
Apply Hyaluronic Acid or Glycolic Acid
If you use both, use Glycolic Acid first and layer Hyaluronic Acid on top.

However, if you aren't that much in the sun, the SPF that you applied in the morning should last you the entire day.

The Vitamin C Serum that you have includes a Vitamin C Derivative so you can use it with your Niacinamide! :)
How often you can use your exfoliant (BHA) depends on your skin.

@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet Thanku❤️
Hey Melissa! I've always put on the hyaluronic acid before the glycolic bc I would apply it to damp skin after cleansing. Is my method incorrect?
Hi iam using plum glycolic acid toner nicinamide serum hylronic serum then mouistriser on pm but i got pimple
How about the ordinary vitamin c serum and retinol?

Is it normal to have breakouts during the 1st-2nd week of using the products? I’m currently using the ordinary set and glycolic acid. Using the masque during Tuesdays and fridays, while the glycolic acid during mon-wed-thurs-sat as my PM routine.

@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet I used glycolic twice only for the 1st week, then 3x for the 2nd week. Currently on my 3rd week with the schedule I just stated. Maybe I should go back to twice/week just to ease the breakouts?

Hello Michelle :)
The routine/order is correct, but for what are you using those products?
Regarding sunscreen, it really depends on what you want to achieve. I know that it isn't widespread here in Europe to wear it; however, I highly recommend using it when battling dark spots or other pigmentation issues. It also can help to prevent it. But SPF 15+ may be enough when not being outside for several hours. 😉

Hii can I also add salicylic acid and lactic acid to this routine aswell ?
That's difficult because you should avoid using multiple acids in the same routine. After all, that may lead to irritation over time. But what you can do is alternate with Glycolic Acid. So one day, you use lactic acid, the other day salicylic acid etc. Or lets say that would be my recommendation :)

Hi Melissa. Have one question what happen if use hyaluronic acid after niacinamide?
Nothing you can also do that :) The Ordinary recommends the following:
"Generally, we recommend applying water-based solutions first, followed by oil formulations, and finally cream/suspension formulas. If you have more than one water-based serum, you can apply based on the priority of your concern (the product that targets the most important concern should go first)."
From my experience and from what I have read in my books, Hyaluronic Acid can help to increase the absorption of the products that follow; therefore, I think it's best to use it before. But generally, there isn't any research about it, so there isn't any right or wrong.

Should i use the toner every day? I heard it caused hyperpigmentation if its used too much
Hm, no hyperpigmentation is not the issue. It could happen with Glycolic Acid peels in very high strengths, but generally, no. Yes, that's fine. Hyaluronic Acid can be used daily however when using Glycolic Acid, it mainly depends on your skin tolerance and needs.

How can I add mandelic acid in this routine????
I recommend not using multiple AHA products after each other as it can lead to skin sensitivity; it is best to alternate.
AHA = Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid and Mandelic Acid

Can you please clarify my one doubt ...after cleanser i only use glycolic acid on face after that can i apply moisturizer (aveeno moisturizer)....please reply ..thank you in advance
yes, of course.
Can you check my skincare routine or make any suitable adjustments? Thanks
Hello,
Exfoliating acids are generally used before Hyaluronic Acid (serum).
@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet okay thank you so much for the reply, I really appreciate your help.
Do not use a foaming cleanser instead use a gel cleanser. Foaming cleanser is actually very harsh to our face.
@@MedusaCharms honestly the time I wrote this comment, my skin was superrrr clear. I shouldn’t have messed with it. Ever since I started paying attention to my skin and dabbling in skincare, my skin has gone downhill and is now frankly terrible 😂😂

Hi
Can we use glycolic serum during pregnancy?
My recommendation would be to ask a dermatologist or doctor for the best advice :)
Thank You so much❤️

Hello Melissa😘
Hello 😊
What will happen if i use glycolic acid everyday?
In the beginning, there might not be much effect, but over time, it could cause serious irritation as you progressively affect newer, healthier skin cells.
Hi can you please help me 🥺🥺
I am struggling to choose correct scikcare. I am 19 y/o.
I am a college going student now. I have selected a skincare for myself. Can you help me by saying if that is good for my skin or not . My skin type is normal to dry. I really want clear skin 🥺😭 bcz of sickness I am suffering from acne 😓
Am

Paula's choice BHA exfoliant
Hyaluronic acid serum ordinary
Niacinamide serum ordinary
CeraVe moisturizer
Nutrizena sunscreen
Pm
CeraVe hydrating cleanser
Glycolic acid ordinary

CeraVe moisturizer
For body I am using
Dove body wash

And Bodyshops body yogurt
Should I change the products or the sequence to get my desired skin?
Please help me please😭
Well, this is really not a good choice and will irritate your skin over time as you are using too many acids.
Since your skin type is dry, I suggest using the following products:
AM (daily if tolerated):
CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser
The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid Serum
The Ordinary Niacinamide Serum
Nutrizena Sunscreen
PM:
CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser
The Ordinary Glycolic Acid (2-3 times per week, wait 1-2 minutes before applying moisturizer)
CeraVe Moisturizer (use a bean-sized amount)
PM (Once a week or every two weeks)
The Ordinary Peeling Solution.

No serum for pm?
And should I stop using Paula's choice BHA 2% liquid exfoliant?
Thank you so much for helping me 🥺🌸 you are really a kind hearted person 🌸❤️
@@HaziAutos No, it's not necessary to use a serum at night with Glycolic Acid toning solution. The solution is very potent, so it's important not to overdo it and slowly build up the skin's tolerance over weeks. After that, if needed, you can add a serum. Skincare takes time, and it's important not to overwhelm the skin.
Also, it's recommended to use only one exfoliant. Since you have dry skin, Glycolic acid would be the correct one to use. However, if you have oily skin, you should use Salicylic Acid.
I'm glad to be of help! 😊

I thought your skin was supposed to be damp before applying HA
No, it's a derivative that they are using.(Sodium Hyaluronate) So it does not matter.
