  • Judy Garland sings Dory and Andre Previn's I'll Plant My Own Tree from Valley Of The Dolls. Have bits and pieces of this session in TJGE vaults, found this bit on a portable hard drive and it was labeled "Planting Trees 1". There are some session sounds before the start on the raw recording but I can't really tell if this is the first take or the mix that was used for the final test recording. Either way, I've made it sound a bit different by adding some bottom to the recording. Can't tell if it's better or just different. Hope you guys like it. I've posted elsewhere on UA-cam Judy's interview about why she left the film, as well as a snippet of Judy's a cappella version of the song.

I knew about the drama of Judy and this movie and the parallels of Judy and the Neely O'Hara character. I remember watching Susan Hayward lipsync for her life to Margaret Whiting's version of this song and thinking, 'I wonder how Judy would do this song....' Well, thank you for answering that question. Miss Garland took this silly camp bit of fluff and made it her own statement. She grabs you by the lapels and makes you listen. I can never multitask with Judy. I simply have to stop and listen. And it's always a pleasure. It was the same with this song. Sorry, Margaret. Judy wins this one.

I agree wholeheartedly, neither can I multitask whilst listening to Judy sing any song. She was never one of the pedestrian “easy listening” singers. She demands your attention but always rewards you for doing so.

Judy is just tossing this off like the dumb little ditty that it is and yet she's still making it sensational, as it was supposed to be in the plot of the movie. One of the things that makes the movie campy is that the Hayward/Whiting version in the movie is totally NOT sensational and an audience of extras has to pretend it is.

the great thing about Judy is her commitment to her material. she gave it her all so no matter how stupid the lyrics and boy are they bad - she makes you feel the sentiment beyond the clunky words.

Despite all the problems around her work in this movie, ending in her being fired, Judy is in strong, R.I.P. top voice here. She always put so much of herself into her work.

Judy sounds first rate and was at the very top of her form! This just shows that with the proper equalization, reverb and pitch control as was used in all of her recordings, she was still very first rate and was not washed up and her voice was not now only just a memory. Her voice here sounds almost as great as when she sang on her TV series! Buzz, you have done another one of your miracles for the world to enjoy. This makes me sad when I hear how great she sounds here because it proves and shows just how great she actually would have been in the movie.🤔😢🤗💌

Thank you, again! In an alternate reality, it would have been fascinating to see Judy finish this role, and have Liza play the Patty Duke character. Neither would need stunt singers to sing for them. 🙂

Wow. That's quite a rebirth to this infamous recording. She sounds great. It's not the melody that is so awful, it's those lyrics. You have to wonder who was it that said: "For Helen's big number, we need a song about a tree. That's it. A tree." Oh dear Previns. "It's my yard, so I will try hard..." LMAO.

I’ve thought that about so many musicals from her time. I’ve read that she was the first choice for so many movies that she didn’t have the time or health to do. Can’t help but wonder what those movies would have been like with her as the star. And what a shame she wasn’t able to do the one Broadway musical that she wanted to do so badly - Mame.

The film version of "Annie Get Your Gun" is mostly forgotten.
The only reason anyone ever talks about it, is the fact that Judy was fired from the picture.
I always wonder whose bright idea it was to have Busby Berkley direct the film.

It's not the greatest song ever written but if anyone can spin gold out of straw it's Judy! She certainly would have been more convincing as an electrifying Broadway star than Susan Hayward and Margaret Whiting did. And she wouldn't have needed that psychedelic mobile that Miss Hayward rather cagily had to negotiate!!!

...true with your comment on the song. The lyrics are silly, and the melody is a patchwork of other song highpoints. Still, hearing Judy Garland sing it...THAT voice, brings credibility. Yes, while Susan Hayward IS a actress of high merit in her own right, she did/does, not seem to be able to fit the glove of the Broadway star (though i do enjoy her scenes w/Patty Duke removing Susans wig). Hey, lighten up about the HUGE mobile. I find its dated distracting presence adding to the movie's visual extremes of the era.

This song has the strangest lyrics. I don't know what Dory Previn was thinking. According to the book Helen Lawson opened in a Broadway musical called "Hit the Sky". " If Helen's show was about "Arbor Day" the "I'll Plant My Own Tree "lyrics would have been perfect. Otherwise, forget it.

    • @charliechilders6630

And the Previns did such a great job for the film with Natalie Wood called "inside Daisy clover"! They wrote their best song "you're gonna hear from me"! Now why couldn't they have written something like that for Judy? 🤔 This song would have been worthy of her talents!😳 However, she makes this song sound great! Like you said, if the words had been different, the melody would probably have been okay.
