Had heard that the Biomaster is a noisy filter. So, good idea to get up closer to let us listen to it. You opened the cupboard door and immediately I could only hear music 😂 Played that part of the video back, and yep, music. No noise then? Only music? A musical filter?😂
I love using the cheap airline tubing, not only for feeding rings but I will also use a three arm connector to add a suction cup to corral my floating plants and keep them exactly where I want them.
For anyone wondering, the new spraybar, prefilter bar and inlet all also fit on the old biomaster. So if you struggle with flow with the old model, you can upgrade it quite cheaply with most of the new parts.
Ok Matt.. I have the same filter it is about a month old. I have the clear spray bar, but it has regular small holes. And my pre filter has less and smaller holes. So that's a bit disappointing. It is very quiet though! Also, what kind of pipes are you running? They look much nicer that the black bulky ones that came with. Great video! Love the new fish and the suspense was really good!!
That Biomaster 850 has a very good design, especially for when you need to clean it. The FX 6 is a brilliant filter but a pain to dismantle to clean it. I think your onto something with the mixing of media. Very good idea Matt. Those Cara's are lovely and your tank is looking very nice 😊
What a coincidence I just rigged up a "floating plant holder", for lack of a better term. I used gel super glue, some suction cups and airline tubing. Seems to be working well so far. Tank is looking nice keep up the good work!
Hi Matt - I’ve heard floating containment called a “boom”. Just got two Biomaster(2) Thermo 250’s and liking them a lot. Keen to try mixing and matching the foams and media. Looking forward to seeing how yours perform.
Amazing zebra cichlids! Love that they can literally change their stripes 😂 also… better get that flamingo cup back before the next video otherwise there will be outrage…. 😂
I have also noticed the noise Biomasters can make. From my experiemtation, it seems that the little feet that go underneath need to be on a hard surface. If you put the filter on foam or directly on carpet you will get lots of noise. You can get a ceramic tile to go underneath if you need to make a hard surface. This reduced the noise to the point I could sleep in the same room with no issue. I have also noticed that my cheap Eheim stand seems to amplify the sound, and Matt doesn't have this, so the quality of the stand might be important.
i got a Bio Master Pro Thermo 850 (1) on sale from Oase direct this summer, right before they announced the Bio Master II. But having seen this, i must have gotten some transition kit, because the pre-filters are all 10 ppm (which at the time surprised me) and the pre-filter rod is the large-holed formed plastic one. The spray bar, which I am not using anyway, is the old version: just the plastic pipe with holes drilled in. But i also got the foams and the helix media as well, which i really like. Kinda funny, that was back in August, I may have had one of the first new style pre-filter setups.
Hi Matt, i'm now setting up a new tank after being 10 years out of the hobby, it's running in at this moment. I get a lot of usefull info from YT, i think your channel is one that works very good for me, i like the way you present your info. What i find interesting is that nowadays there's a lot of aquaria wich dont have a lid covering them. How do you experience that in your home environment, does it moisturise your house/does it vaporise out a lot? Hopefully you can give me some info on how you experience this. Many Thanks, greetings from the Netherlands!
I bought recently a biomaster 250, and it had the new designed spray bar, and the outlet spray bar is similar to the new one, it's clear but has small holes, not thoes slit things
When you were changing the foams on your pre-filter, I was wanting you to do half the blue ones and half the orange ones. You are probably right though to see the difference with a full change.
I got a (breeding pair) of ivanacara adoketa this week from fishkeeper. They are fantastic fish! Put them in a black water set up and dropping the ph in the hopes they start breeding, there showing the right colours so 🤞
...or, you could just put a pre-filter sponge over the inlet of a far cheaper filter for a couple of quid? 😂 I like this filter. I think Oase are moving the game onwards, but I don't agree with anything you said about media (surprise), plastic media is only worthwhile when it's in constant movement. Plastic is a terrible home for bacteria otherwise. The 'clogging' you point out is food and more surface for the bacteria. A good quality Sintered Glass media is superior to all other media types, including ceramic. Pretty fish though.
Overall, I’m happy with my Biomaster, but I have a fairly persistent sound like a piece of debris is rattling in the impeller, I’ve tried cleaning everything and it still comes and goes. I started a dialogue with Oase, but haven’t had the time to close the loop on it. I really like having the prefilter and internal heater 👍🏻
@ I’m in North America, I called them today and got a hold of someone quickly, they asked me to send them a video, they were not able to determine the cause, so they are sending a new impeller assembly to see if that’s the issue. Overall, good customer service experience!
I know the feeling 🤷had a plant delivery yesterday so thought I’d plant and distribute them around my tanks today, then Mark up loaded his so found myself watching both of you in the background all day lol 😂 while doing my fish tanks, just sorting out some brine shrimp 🦐 for my apistos..the more tanks the more I’m kept on my feet.oh looking 👀 forward to seeing your garage build 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Matt, have you watched what PondGuru suggests to set up the BioMaster? He uses 10 ppi for the prefilter. Then, since the water goes from bottom to top of the canister, he puts 30 ppi and polishing foam in the bottom tray so the water is super clean before it reaches the trays above that are full of ceramic media. It sounds very logic. What do you think about it?
Take some of what pondguru says with a pinch of salt. A lot of his videos are purely based on increasing flow rate and selling his own products whilst knocking down everything else.
Ive never seen zebra acara before. The color change is so cool. Good pick and i see why you didnt pass them up. You ever going to tell what they cost you?
I think they have redesigned some of the sizing on internal things so I would be dubious of it fitting. That being said 90% of the cost of a new filter will be the motor head so if you're looking at replacing that it's probably worth just getting a whole new one to be honest.
Clear spray bars yes but not the elbows over the top. These elbows will catch less muck and provide way less friction than the ribbed piping that fluval uses.
Hi, I have a question. I'm new to the hobby (and I've got you and MD to thank for it) and I joined a second hand marketplace group on facebook, in which I have read from a lot of people that the biological media in the filters should never be exposed to air. Your method is clearly different, so I wonder if it's a different type of media we're talking about, or if they're simply wrong (we're still talking about random people on facebook vs a professional, so I trust your opinion much more, obviously)
Zebra Acara - never heard of them before but I certainly want them now I've seen them. You never did give a price other than to say they were the most expensive fish you are currently keeping. I wonder if they are as prolific as Blue Acara, if they are you could make a bit of a killing if they breed as readily and frequently as their cousins.
Oh boy... no flamingo cup? I'm outa here! 😆. Now it has become a thing and you need to keep it up. Make it like where's Waldo and long time viewers will know to search the background looking for the infamous flamingo cup!
I'd love your opinion on 'bio home uitra' as produced by UA-cam bloke Pond Guru. I've watched many of his vids for years and he's convinced me that they are the best media to use in any filter. If you haven't seen any his videos, please take the time to go and watch one or two of his older posts that compares plastic with his own created ceramic stuff. Thanks,, loving all your vids, bring back flamingo cup 😘
I tried to buy one ( flamingo cup )so I would be able to start stockpiling my stuff But my wife took it away since that's her favorite animal And refuses to give it back
What fish do you think would suit this tank?
A nice shoal of cardinal tetra?
@@FishShopMatt Cardinals were my immediate thought to go with the history with MD. 😄
@@FishShopMatt but headstanders for uniqueness would be my final answer.
Hyphessobrycon amapaensis!!
Gastrodermus guapore
No flamingo cup 😮 I was out shopping and saw some which I bought. I had to convince my partner they were essential for fish keepers 😂
That's amazing! I may need to get some spares hahaha
😅😅😅😅
@@FishShopMattI was thinking of finding you a small white elephant cup and sending it to you!
😂😂😂😂
XD

Nice idea on the suction cup!!!
I had to look it up. PPI stands for "pores per inch" and is a measurement of the number of cells in a piece of foam.
Interesting! That makes sense though!
I scratched my chin and guessed pores per inch! Now I've got big head syndrome and I'm strutting around like a genius! Thanks 😅
The flamingo cup is lost, we are in defcon 4 ladies and gentlemen I repeat defcon 4 !!!!
Cool new fish. Love the bold stripes!
Noice, because of one of your videos I'm trying the tannin water now. I like it so far, I hope to bring in some shrimp TY
Love the new fish. Oh an Matt it's all your fault - I how own a flamingo cup!
Hahaha you're amongst a few people who now own the flamingo cups!
@@FishShopMatt A small but elite group who knew what to look for on Amazon lol. I thought it's be perfect for working with my tiny Nano tanks
I see, you live in a nerdy household. Love it!
I’m loving the upgrade to the tank! You always know how to create the perfect environment for your fish 💯 Thank you for sharing, Matt!

LOVE the sign next to the tank!
These are on my short list too! Such awesome and amazing fish. Ivanacara Adoketa for the win 🔥🔥🔥
I love Adoketa! They change stripes based on their moods.. and add lid cos they are good jumpers! Lolx
Great video. Love watching the tank evolve.
I've kept fish for quite a while and I learn something new from every one of your videos. Thanks Matt!
That's amazing to hear, thank you! No one in this hobby will know everything, we are always constantly learning from one another.
@FishShopMatt You know A LOT! 😀
Harry potter cup, and Game of Thrones sign post. You're such a nerd. I knew there was a reason I liked you.😅
The cut to the foams on your fingers gave me a good chuckle. Great video, as usual!
Another great video, keeping my fingers crossed for a big mbuna tank in your garage 👍🏻
Beautiful fish... perfect for dark water tank, would love this set up its amazing ❤
You are super lucky to get them. Its very very rare and expensive where I live. Hopefully they breed for you Matt🎉.

a brighter coloured tetra is my vote, Serpaes would be good, or red phantoms - be a nice contrast to the others, show them up more too 👍

Just like black phantom but in red 😂❤

With the new sponges I’m guessing you could put a mixture of normal sponge and carbon sponges so best of both worlds
Matt, have you watched what PondGuru suggests to set up the BioMaster? He uses 10 ppi for the prefilter. So, how do you tell how to propagate a plant? Like, which ones are stems and can be cut+replanted, which ones do you split the roots on etc.
Ive never seen zebra acara before. The color change is so cool. Good pick and i see why you didnt pass them up. You ever going to tell what they cost you?

I'd call it a fence
So how much did the new fish cost? They are quite beautiful and interesting.
So they currently range from around £40 to £75 each depending on size and quality.
Must git some carbon fome next time I'm out and git it a try 😉 👍
something bright, yellowy orange would be good
Do you know if the new filter «head» fits with the rest of the stuff from the old biomasters? I would love that air trapping feature
I think they have redesigned some of the sizing on internal things so I would be dubious of it fitting.
That being said 90% of the cost of a new filter will be the motor head so if you're looking at replacing that it's probably worth just getting a whole new one to be honest.
@ never mind looks like oase is selling a new head plate to retrofit original biomasters😄
A small group of Columbian Tetras would look great 😁
Probably a bit too feisty? but a small shoal of Rosy Barb would really pop
Fluval have had clear plastic spray bars for years
Clear spray bars yes but not the elbows over the top. These elbows will catch less muck and provide way less friction than the ribbed piping that fluval uses.
blackwater ❤
Agreed!
I tried before with George Farmer as do you think Oase will do an update kit so we could update the original biomasters
Do you have any sparkling gouramis? We just got our first trio and they're making that clicking noise at night. It's hilarious lol

What is breakdown rate of the plastic media into microplastics, and can that harm the fish?
Hillstream loach
I have the thermo 100 will there be foams to buy for that model?
ohhhhh nooooo the flamingo cup vanished now it seems world will come to an end :D
Geophagus winemilleri and electric blue acara or thread fin acara
ZEBRA PLECOS!
