  • The Oncidium alliance consists of many genera of orchids. Although some of these will not breed together there are many that have been combined to form the group of hybrids available now known as the Oncidium Intergeneric Alliance. The species involved in this have got a great deal of variation not just in the flowers, but in plant size and cultural needs. In this video I will try to get at least a basic grasp in the variety of this group. Please feel free to respond. I hope you enjoy it! ...Wade

    Finally! A grower with valid information, clear explanation and knows what he is doing. These girlie girlies who are more worried about nails, make-up and hair should leave videos to those BOTH men and women who know what they are doing. Thank you Wade! Do you sell on the internet?

    Great video. I always feel like there is a lot of trial and error involved with a new oncidium. I like the thick rooted oncidiums with stiff leaves. The smaller ones really give me a hard time (nelly islers etc). I can't grow them in bark to save my life!

    Hello Wade, new subscriber & orchid collector.....I just received my first oncidium intergenic orchids today from Carmela’s......winsonara rose quartz, wils eye candy, penny candy...mystic maze & bilra Hilo sparkle. All very healthy with firm thick pseudobulbs and green! I searched for care & found your video! They are all in spike flower.....I love them! Should I repot after bloom.....and what about light during winter? I get bright southeast am light, we have a skylight in ceiling so very bright. Should I use grow lights?
    I live in NJ and will check out your online store....very informative video!

      Kathleen I usually repot all plants when I get them unless I know the mix that it’s in is in good condition and works with my watering practices. Since they are getting ready to bloom you can wait until they are finished. For Oncidiums I use 3 parts medium bark and 1 part coarse perlite (my basic Cattleya mix) and then add about 1/2 part sphagnum moss. The moss can be adjusted to suit your waterin style. Please contact me if you need more help. I know most of the orchid societies in New Jersey.

    Hi Wade, what a great, informative video. It is very helpful. Question, how do I find out about the parentage of a plant and what kind of potting mix they liked, to get what the current plant likes best? Please keep teaching, you do a great job.

    • @wadesorchids7219
      @wadesorchids7219  9 років тому

      Susan's prairie orchids Susan, sometimes it seems I don't get a heads up on a post or I just missed yours somehow. My apologies. The American Orchid Society has a program called "Orchids Plus" that is rather expensive at $58.50 but worth the price if you really want to research parentage. Something that works fairly often is if you just do a search for the plant like this, "Miltassia Shelob parentage" You can often find the parents in vendors' info or a post from someone. The other part of your question is the hard one and so many people ask it. I have a standard way that I pot Onc. intergerics. I use a combination of seedling mix and Cattleya mix (the larger the pot, the more Cattleya mix) and add some sphagnum moss. The desired condition is evenly moist. Then watch the plant's response. If you are getting nice, fat psuedobulbs and good flowering it's perfect! There are some that have Brassia prominent in their backgrounds that need to be kept drier. If the plant is really big it is probably influenced by Brassia.

    Hi Wade! Thank you for your informative videos. I just got my very own orchid for the first time, an Oncidesa Sweet Sugar, and I'm over the moon. The problem is,though it has about 10 bulbs it is in a 4" plastic pot that has cracked, and the new bulbs are growing upwards with aerial roots only. I am misting them as much as I can (I only have a basic household humidity environment), but (a) does this plant need repotting now, or can I wait until it is done blooming (it is still growing flower spikes), or should I wait until spring as some care sheets recommend, (b) when I do repot, do I need to tilt the plant so that the new roots, which are in the air now, are buried in the medium, or leave them where they are? I'm afraid they are not getting enough moisture from my basic household humidity, which is 30-50% (pseudobulbs that have roots in the medium have rehydrated nicely after suffering in the shipping, but the new pseudo bulbs with aerial roots only are still wrinkly) and (c) what medium would you recommend for this type of oncidium? It seems to be in moss right now, and I read that plants that are used to moss need to be transitioned slowly if switching media, but in my house plants don't dry out fast after watering (maybe lack of sun?? I have northern and eastern windows, and I am in Northeast US) so I think all moss, or even 50% moss, may be too water-retentive.
    Anyway, thank you very much--your depth of experience shows through your videos, and I'd be happy to hear some words of wisdom!

    Hi, Wade. Really like your videos...This resting period for Oncidiums is only in places where winter takes place, right? I live in Venezuela (South America).

    • @wadesorchids7219
      @wadesorchids7219  9 років тому +1

      ***** What I wouldn't give to see Venezuela!!!! Some of the Oncidiums (even those native to you) take a rest in the winter.... A bit less water and a bit cooler temperature. You can tell if a plant is resting. If it goes for 3 weeks or so without producing any plant growth, root growth, or flowers it most likely resting or preparing to do so. This is for Oncidiums, Cattleyas... most orchids actually. This may not apply to many of the Onc. intergenerics. Hybrids you just have to pay attention to. Onc. maculatum grows as far south as Venezuela and it takes a rest. Many of its hybrids do too but again, you have to watch them. Now I probably have you thoroughly confused. :)

    • @wadesorchids7219
      @wadesorchids7219  9 років тому +2

      I haven't done a video on watering for a couple reasons. Mostly, in a greenhouse things are a bit different than in the house. I wet everything daily after checking the plants and looking for any that might need a "spot" watering. The mounted plants get watered every day.. the small seedlings from flask and compots are watered every 3 days, and about once a week everything gets soaked. It's actually a bit more complicated than that with plants that need winter rest and such. Also, I adjust my potting mix when I repot if I want the plant to remain more moist. The main thing is that I look through the greenhouse and examine the plants before I pick up the hose. Watering, more than any other factor, requires you to pay attention to your plants.

    Hello Wade, I enjoy your videos and have just bought my first Oncidium, so thought I should check your 'library' to see what I could learn about them. My 2 (?) year old Oncidium is potted in small fir bark and looks very healthy, but will watch closely and may put in sphagnum moss as you have, if it starts looking off colour in any way. Do you know anything about Bifrenarias? I bought one on line and have posted a couple of videos on my channel/youtube site, hoping for some feedback. If you have a moment, I would appreciate your comments on what you think the spots on the leaves have been caused by. All the best and THANKYOU for all your invaluable knowledge and advice :). Leah

      +Leah Carpenter Hello Leah! What to do with any new orchid can be puzzling. After seeing too many that I waited on start to decline I've come to a personal conclusion that if you are not sure of the condition of the root system and if the plant is actively growing it is a good idea to at least take it out of the pot and look at the roots. Waiting until signs appear on the plant can cause a severe setback and sometimes a loss of the plant. As for Bifrenaria - I have Bif. harrisoniae. They grow basically like a Cattleya and like a slight reduction of water and a bit cooler in the winter. They almost always put out only 1 growth a year and when late fall approaches the growth is matured and it is ready for a rest. I will try to check your video on the spotting issue.

    • @leatherbyleah
      @leatherbyleah 9 років тому

      Thankyou Wade for your advice. I took it and had a look at the Oncidium roots (and the Bifrenaria, just because I was curious) the Onc. is fine, but the Bifrenaria .... rotten roots and quite a lot of fungi covered bark. So pleased I had a look. I went out on a limb and planted the Bif. in tumbled quartz rock. They seem to grow in rock crevices and the media won't break down - so I am giving it a go. Will be watering it a lot I guess, but I am happy with that.

    Hi Wade, Love your videos. I have a question about the yellow ends and brown spots on tips of leaves. When mine have this I panic that it has a fungal or bacteria infection, but yours have the same thing and you say it looks like a healthy plant and you don't mention the problem. Am I overthinking this? Should I be worrying?

    • @wadesorchids7219
      @wadesorchids7219  7 років тому +1

      The yellow ends are either from older leaves that are dying as part of the natural cycle or a lack of humidity. The spotting is a fungal problem but not a serious one. Some plants are more prone to it than others but it is not terribly harmful. I find mine get it because many of my plants are getting pretty high light. I am not sure why this association occurs but I'm certain that it is caused by the light because if I grow a particular plant in more shade it doesn't get the leaf spotting or at least not as much. I wouldn't be terribly worried about it though. Hope I've helped.

    • @wadesorchids7219

      Kristina Way orchids usually do very poorly in self watering containers. Whatever you use in your media that would absorb the water is going to keep it too wet for them.

    do you have a potting vid on omcids/ miltass/ miton/ brassia// please...
    i tried to use spag moss but it started to rot the roots... are all your omcidiums in spag or bark a bit confused
    how do you water these plants.... from overhead on just the moss.. how often etc...
    do you pack the pots..?
    i live in Australia... and am not sure i am doing the best for mine.... the bark media was not keeping them hydrated at all....
    any help much appreciated

    • @wadesorchids7219
      @wadesorchids7219  6 років тому

      I use a mix of 3 parts bark, 1 part perlite (that is my cattleya mix), and 1 part cut up sphagnum moss. As you get used to this mix you can adjust the amount of moss to suit your culture. Also, if you have a plant that is potted and dries too quickly you can add coarse sand to the top and water it in. The sand will give the water more surface area to adhere to. Also, I use styrofoam peanuts in the bottom for added drainage. If you can't get them, stones or any inert material will work. Good luck!!!

      Hamim CHOWDHURY I use a MSU formulation and it does a good job. Fertilizer is the last thing to worry about. If a plant looks healthy but won’t flower it usually means it needs more light. Also it seems strange that products with calcium are promoted when many areas have excess calcium in the water to begin with.

      Hello dear
      Greatly responded so quick ! i appriciate friend .
      most of the orchid youtuber's
      hardly discuss academic . I do not know why ?
      they either keep quite with no reply
      or missfeed info which is risky too.
      Althouh your growing and mine are not same with many reasons starting from weather up to support by family and ecomony!!
      Still we are very close to basics and can share a lot .
      You mentioned :
      "not blooming might one of the cause more calcium accomoletions ? "
      If i take your point .
      how to reduce .
      Mind you
      i flash each after 48 hours from each feed .
      i useally feed 200-230 ppm at growing season addetive my CalMag / Cal Nit / Epsom salt / NPK 30-20-10 or 21-21-21 NPK added with Maxicrop sea weed twice a week mix with my feed about 40 ppm which further rises up to 200 withbcal Mag
      or Cal nit alternatively
      and i also feed
      Sea wesd extract and Orchid Focus grow and bloom from same brand at different time .
      In addition
      the slow releaae fertilizer like Osmokot is in pot busket always !!
      I grow out side with 70% black Net UV protected .
      Now
      how can i ensure
      so that
      my plant blooms as like yours and your catsm is mind blowing ,
      So what is your next tips which you think i should be following ?
      by the way
      my growing media in
      1. rock with clay pot
      2. Bark with coconut chips
      3. Spagnam moss and bark mised up
      followings are my line up media for my all plants !!
