- Pokemon Competitive Singles has been turned on it's head with the release of the "Hidden Treasure of Area Zero" DLC. Gliscor was perhaps the most powerful returning Pokemon of all. With access to Spikes now, a Defensive typing that makes it hard to pin down, and the new ability to Terastallize, Gliscor had a stranglehold on the tier.
The votes are in and the community has voted to ban Gliscor. How could this happen? This is sane.

Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on UA-cam. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

Tera was always an issue, it removes checks for powerful pokemon. In slower pace games it's not too bad.
For now Europe is save from IRL Iron Mugulis, the question is for how long?

@@owenblount7334 gholdengo is getting weaker with each dlc. I dont use ghold and I hate em, but things like knock off came back. People sleep on assurance. Assurance+rocks can do great damage before teal mask dlc

OU becomes the defacto bottom tier, as every single pokemon is banned from OU for providing a buff to Kingambit when defeated, who threatens Gholdengo.
This just goes to show that Iron Mugulis has infiltrated Smogon. Every day, we move closer to its dystopian vision of the tiering system.

I fear gliscor’s ban will not do much against the hazard problem in OU. Gholdengo will find another hazard setter friend, and while its not too bad without poison heal it will still be an issue

Hammurot and Glimmora are already seeing a boon in usage. I've run into Glimmora on at least 50% of teams I've faced since gliscor was banned. The problem was never gliscor, it's hazards. That's a taboo topic though.
Gliscor's main issue wasn't hazards anyways. It was the fact that the best gliscor answer was another gliscor, which is never a good sign. It led to balance teams turning into pp stalling wars, which is just horrible

Yeah that and as he mentioned, Gliscor has always been an OU staple and has always been strong. Which I definitely agree with. Gliscor just has too much going on at all times, and Tera I think is really what pushed it over the edge. In addition to the shocking lack of Ice distribution this generation, so it can wreak havoc with really any of its sets including some more offensive variants, as it’s sole primary weakness for all intents and purposes is null this gen.

@@TheRealAquazyes it is. Gliscor still has a grand total of 2 answers in OU, itself and Corvi. Banning Ghold only means Corvi's defog can't be blocked, but it still can barely harm Gliscor, now instead of punishing Corvi with Ghold, Magnezone or a Competitive/Defiant Mon will.
The problem about Gliscor isn't that it makes hazard stacking worse (although it does), the problem is that it has no good answers and can always force progress.
That's not to say that Ghold isn't broken, just that Gliscor is broken regardless. Out of all hazard setters, Gliscor is by far one of the least Ghold reliant.

Well yeah they keep banning the good ones! Justified or not, Baxcalibur, Calyrex-Ice, Regieleki (who Teras Ice), Iron Bundle, Chien-Pao, there's 1 Ice type left in OU! They practically set this up for themselves.
The ice types are on a revolving conveyor belt anyways, they always get replaced by that one ice type in the back

At this point I can't help but to think of YGO - Konami and Halq, to be precise. While Halq got banned after years, until then it got several tuners banned which enabled Halq, while it was always obvious that Halq was the actual problem card. We're seeing this very thing play out in gen 9 here, just that Halq is Gholdengo.

That is the problem with Ice types. They either suck or are overpowered, and there is no in-between, and that line is very thin. A line that only the Gen 4 Ice Pokémon sit upon, and Arctozolt.

Honestly this ban just shows how good hazards have become. Which is the fault of Gholdengo's good as gold. Which is wrapping the entire OU meta but everyone loves new toys
Gholdengo doesn't effect hazards as much as you think. If it was done all we would get is Corviknight's defog.

Seeing Gliscor getting the axe while Golden String Cheese Man lives makes me very happy I don't play Gen 9 competitive.
In the few times I've played the only new format I care about, being National Dex OU, Gholdengo is a massive frustration so I can't imagine the agony of it staying in the restricted standard OU.
It's like Yugioh's Skill Drain, Imperial Order, and Royal Decree. Completely shutting off 1/3rd of the entire game from affecting it is an astronomically infuriating concept for little to no cost.
There's no reason I should not be able to Leech Seed, Hypnosis, or *GROWL* the String Cheese Man.
I've been saying this since day 1 - Ghold's ability in particular, combined with it's absurd typing, movepool, and stat spread make it an obvious problem. It's apt that you mentioned the floodgates of yugioh, because Ghold's ability, along with a few other such as Arena Trap and Shadow Tag, are all really shitty to deal with for the same core reason - they are inherently non-interactive. In yugioh, like 80% of decks need their spells, and an even higher amount need their monster effects, so floodgating those out entirely leaves the person with what essentially amounts to no recourse and leaves the floodgate user to quickly sweep up after the opponent is forced to pass. Mechanics in competitive battling, like being able to SWITCH, and being able to control the other teams hazards are as vital to being able to *play* the battle as the aforementioned cards are in yugioh.
It’s honestly ridiculous and probably the reason why everyone is switching to play gen 3 😂😂😂😂😂

I'm sure you meant WAS. Gholdengo got banned by the skin of a teeth in BH (41/68. 40/67 wouldn't be enough) at the beginning of this month and... Yeah, it was indeed the main problem alongside Baxcalibur and Bloodmoon, as well as why hazards were opressive. Can't believe I'm saying this but atm NatDex IS BETTER THAN OU.

I was so mad when I got crab hammered by a gliscor. Turns out he got it this generation, and it really threw me off. I already set up a rain dance so my Scizor could tank a fire fang. Then switched in my talon flame, then proceeded to crab hammer it. They gave this thing too much coverage.
If we are going to be fully honest here, the problem has always been hazards being OP. Now that knock off is back, we are seeing them be even more powerful. I was really hoping defog would come back, but it seems they are trying to limit that as well.
The real problem here is Gholdengo, who blocks the most important hazard removal tools in the metagame.
It's not tho hazards have been around for over 15 years with no problem.
And we've always had a check to get rid of them. The fact Gholdengo can block both Rapid Spin because it's a Ghost type and its ability blocks Defog just makes hazard stacking so much easier. I've always said it, Gholdengo has been the problem for Singles day 1.
Hazards aren't op, most don't affect flying types, or levitate, and t-spikes can be absorbed with a switch in, a lot of mons can switch in stealth rocks with barely any trouble, and if the problem is removing them in front of a gholdengo, it's singles my guy, remove the gholdengo, it's usually frail specially, and cam barely tank an earthquake with max EVs in hp

I'm sure the old Smogon CUO (Chief Utility Officer) Landorous-t pulled some strings with his influence to get this one over the line.

How the hell was Gliscor banned but Gholdengo is still in OU??? Its ability makes it the single most meta defining mon. I mean it's Gholdengo's fault Gliscor is banned. If it wasn't for him I doubt Gliscor would even reach OU.
This is a garbage take lmao; Gliscor is literally *THE LEAST* Ghold-reliant hazard setter in the meta since it can just outlast or even 1v1 the large majority of hazard removers in the meta anyway, it's just that Ghold helps it regardless. Gliscor may simply be _the best_ at abusing Gholdengo support, but let's not delude ourselves into thinking that Gliscor itself isn't just way too good at its job in its own right. It puts the likes of Ting-Lu and even Gen 5/6 Deoxys-Defense to shame.

Nah, Lando-T isn't doing that great RN. The lack of reliable hazzard removal is the main reason why Gliscor was so strong.
@@vanjagalovic3621 The reason there's no reliable hazard removal is due to one Gholden pokemon, that I can't for the life of me, remember it's name.
@@HeavyHebi even without Gholdengo's presence, Gliscor still has a favourable matchup against Cinderace and Tusk (two of the most popular removers), while Corvi can be easily punished with either Magnezone or some Competitive/Defiant Pokemon due to how telegraphed it is. Other hazard removers I can think of like Mandibuzz and Galarian Weezing can still lose to Gliscor too, so even many existing options don't all match up well against Gliscor in a Ghold-less meta.
This thing is banned for (many) a reason.

According to Finchinator (OU Leader), Gholdengo will likely be the next suspect they do, and the reason they did Gliscor first was because it received more support for a ban than Gholdengo did on the most recent community survey.
So before you complain, remember, you voted to suspect Gliscor first, and if you didn’t vote, then you should for future surveys, the OU council wants your opinions to help make decisions for the community and for the good of the tier.
But I voted for Gholdengo and am fine with Gliscor 😭😭

Thank you, I'm tired of all the people bitching about tiering decisions yet didn't even try to get their recs. I get that some are busy and all that, but no way only 100 something people had the time to do it when there are thousands of people complaining. And no, I don't think all of the counsels decisions are correct, I just respect the suspect vote results enough (for the most part).

The number of bans feels so silly at this point, even if each case by case in a vaccum makes sense, when looking at everything as a whole, there really needs to be a better thought put into the format as a whole, maybe there needs to be a split of OU into two tiers becasue just constantly pointing fingers somewhere and going "this is the problem" over and over and over again isnt actually going to fix the meta.
Well lets be honest Smogon OU is a fake metagame, the Pomemon Company does not balance around 6v6 singles and never will. This is just what's naturally going to happen when game developers and their community are completley seperated.
@@i_like_chomp6382 I think as someone who thinks comp and vgc are both cool but mostly from the outside primarily as a fgc and tcg player, this is the biggest disconnect for me, I see complaints about dynamax is broken or tera is broken and think "thats the game's unique mechanic are you gonna try to spurn anything thats new rather than adjust to play around it while its here? People complained about v trigger in sfv but rarely even considered banning it and that game's lifespan was double the average pokemon gen" but if trying to basically force a game to fit a box it was never designed around, it does make more sense discussions like this would come up, even if I feel "how do we make this game a fun 6v6 singles format" should be a better question than "how do we make this game like some mythical concept of balance from the mid gen days"

If you don’t ban him, then matches often devolve into stalling Gliscor Mirror matches which is normally a pretty good sign that something is broken

I think they're doing too many bans this gen. Something is either off with the pokemon/Terra or the mindset of the higher level players, and I've watched the arc of thought over time and I think maybe Smogon might have gone a bit too far because the game design shifted just enough under the hood and what worked before doesn't work now. My advice is to unban everything that isn't a mythical or box legendary that's currently in Ubers and don't touch it for a block of two or three months. Then when bans are discussed don't ban more than two pokemon at a time, or at least a small set number so the meta players can adjust and have time to look for starts. It's too chaotic right now.

Terra needs a suspect test after the dlcs are done, and then the gen 9 OUBL reset to try out the tier again.
Move pool changes and utility creep made Gliscor straight up better than every other ground type.

I cant believe that gholdengo and tusk are not banned but gliscor is. Ghold is so broken imo, decent alround stats, great offensive and defensive typing, great stab moves in shadowball and make it rain, reliable recovery, pretty good coverage moves even without tera(gleam, thunderbolt,focus blast, psycic), status imunity, setup moves, versitility with its scarf trick set, baloon set or covertcloak set being either defensive or settup sweeper. And it is probably one of the big reasonns why the meta is hazard stacking with HO, imunity to both rapidspin AND defog in a metagame where those moves are somewhat limited compared to before while they have increased the distribution of spikes. If gholdengo was banned i think gliscor would not even be top 10 used in OU let alone be banned. In my eyes ghold is more meta defining then gliscor.
I like gliscore more than the next guy but he probably would have gotten banned without ghold.
Also tusk isnt broken, its the best rapid spinner in the game which is why it sees so much play not because it does something unfair

So what is the philosophy here? Surely all of these bans can't be "overcentralizing", there are more spot bans in Gen 9 than entire OU tiers in other generations.
Domino effect is a thing. When you remove the current broken Mon, the next most broken can flourish and be banned next, leaving the next most broken Mon to flourish and repeat the cycle.

Like its just so stupid. I loved Gliscor as a defensive backbones in my team cause he was just unique (high sustain and great typing, but having to maneuver around ice type coverage) and now hes banned when the root issue that makes him OP is gholdengo? HORRIBLE move from showdown.
Big problem is that Gholdengo blocks all hazard removal and even Court Change, so something that would help is another damage move that clears hazards but one that's Psychic or something. That way, it's impossible for one Pokemon to block all of them at the same time
The question now is how will Gliscor do in UUbers ?
Gliscor is banned from Uubers since it’s usage in regular ubers is higher than 4.52%, not to mention gliscor is actually good in ubers

This gen is all over the place, too many non-legendary new mons are ending up in Ubers, shoutouts to Gamefreak.
It's not Gamefreak fault that people still want to play 6vs6 singles with a shit ton of no sense rules when the game is clearly designed around VGC rules

You can probably beat the likes of Calyrex-Shadow and Mega Rayquaza in Doubles better compared to Singles, but that doesn't make them any less bonkers to fight.
Honestly disagree with the notion that Gholdengo forces you to run hazard removers that beat it. Otherwise we’d see a lot more Talonflame and Iron Treads, former having KOing most Gholdengo even without investment, latter resisting Make It Rain while having superior special bulk compared to Great Tusk. And then Mold Breaker Hawlucha stopped being used as well.

I think the plan is to just unban 90% of the bans for the DLC, to give everything a fair shot once GameFreak adds everything back into the game. Some stuff like Chi-Yu will obviously stay banned but with 100 new Pokemon added and several new legends/paradox mons, may as well let it become a sandbox and reban everything one by one.
At the moment by a quick count on smogon, there are 31 pokemon in ou and 19 pokemon on the ou ban list. If you see that as 'those are the pokemon that WOULD be in OU and aren't,' then 2/5ths of the entire OU metagame is banned out of it. At that point, that scope of OU being crushed is a sign that instead, those 19 pokemon should be the basis of OU and the format everyone WANTS to play is actually UU. Like, if the tiering system is meant to keep things that are roughly of equal power near one another, it looks like the OU pokemon can only exist when you ignore 19 better pokemon.
Yeah, I definitely think too much has been banned this gen. UUbers existing means there's room for a whole tier between OU and Ubers.

I wonder if the problem is that more/new tiers are needed, with all the power creep and new mons over the decades, maybe OU to Uber needs to be spaced out a bit(if not even the other tiers)
Single's tiering needs an almost complete redesign more akin to Little Cup's philosophy, create distinct format types rather then just throw lvl 50/100 pokemon at eachother.
I think is was a big mistake not retesting Tera. If Tera is banned the meta goes an alternative Route which is more healthy maybe than ban one and antoher mon
Unfortunately this has the side effect of hurting lower tiers a lot where Tera is significantly more balanced. Maybe this means that it’s a mons problem 🤔

Just knock everpokemon starting from UUbers down a tier and let nature do it's job from then, seriously if you need to keep baning pokemon constantly, maybe you are keeping OU at a lower power level than it really should have
Smogon loves to overstep its boundaries as arbiters of the game. This is honestly just another case of that.
Especially if the final DLC adds a decent amount of new stuff, I really feel like they should retest a bunch of stuff. Also if they ever change the rules for Tera, like making it viewable in team preview (like VGC kinda which has open team sheet), then retesting a bunch of stuff would also make sense. Hidden Tera really helps boosting sweepers be that extra bit broken.
This ban was literally - gholdengo prevents hazzard from being removed and sneasler can therefore sweep effortlessly, so we better ban gliscor.

it is pitifully obvious that Gliscor was banned for no other reason than that Iron Mugulis cloned himself 100x and voted all 100x to ban Gliscor. The mug must be emptied and put in the dishwasher. I know it is not his fault his best Ice move is cold water, but that is a fault of GameFreak and not us, bring him to JUSTICE!
I think when the correct play in a Glis V Glis is to stay in so your other pokemon dont get toxiced or Uturned and PP stall the other Glis - yeah the mon needs to be banned. Suspect Gholdengo now?
Gen 9 OU is such a bizarre tier. It's fun sometimes, but the fun goes away because smogon LOVES to ban any popular Pokemon asap instead of adapting to it.

Cool, it is almost as if the community is finnaly realizing that the phrases like "the x pokemon is not problematic because it can't swipe your entire team" and "but there is counter-play" aren't very good arguments to not ban a pokemon.

I disagree. Even with the lower power level of lower tiers, whilst tera is more manageable, it is still problematic. There's just something inherently broken to flipping your match ups at the click of a button and providing not only free turns for set up, but ways for the sweeper mon to overcome its checks and counters.
Tera is just not a healthy mechanic for any metagame, and I find myself annoyed at having to deal with the constant anxiety that any threat to my team could at any moment find ways to circumvent my attempts to deal with it.
Teams are supposed to have bad match ups, and I feel like tera makes bad match ups harder more often than It provides you with ways to deal with them.
Tera preview could circumvent that issue a bit, but it would still lead to constant 50/50s which does not sound like a pleasant environment to play in.

Honestly I think Gholdengo is the issue and not Gliscor, As Gholdengo provides the environment that Gliscor and other trap setters to work.
Due to all the usage Rimbombee rose up all way from the lower tiers into OU, Because it has sticky web. Gholdengo's impact has caused a trash pokemon to become OU.
The same happened to Blissey with Bloodmoon Ursaluna. Blissey isnt bad but you saw a usage increase due to Bloodmoon ursaluna.
When the indigo disk drops they should unban everything. If current OU staples fall so be it, there have been too many bans this gen when I think there are clear answers to many of our problems, they've just been sent to ubers
I like the part where gholdengo said "IT'S GOLDIN' TIME" and proceeded to gold gliscor out of the tier
I think it's just difficult to balance a fair and fun metagame when power creep has gotten this crazy. They're doing their best, and I can respect that.
Tera isn't directly the cause, but I think it's important to say that ice type coverage has gone down in value becuase the vast majority of major Pokémon with ice type weaknesses (and not uncommonly 4x weakness) use Tera to remove it. Tera is the problem imo. It's just hard to have an answer to some of these when you can pivot to a whole new set if weaknesses and keeping a stabs or even gaining a new one
I think the “he’ll be back in a month anyway” comment relates to Gholdenego. Its a very popular opinion that he enables Gliscor to spike stack, even if Gliscor doesn’t have any really bad matchups. “Gliscor died for Gholdengo’s sins” is a very popular sentiment. When the cheese man is banned, Gliscor could be freed.
When are we just going to recognize that Terra is the problem?
Tera is indeed the problem, although it's effects are far more subtle than Mega, Dyna, or Z crystals
The ability to alter your type and gain/boost STAB changes how each pokemon can be countered, and the ability to change type midgame is historically proven to be enough to push pokemon to Ubers (Greninja and Cinderace before G9)
Many pokemon are balanced by their bad type with 4x weaknesses on many such as pseudolegendaries or ones with powerful moves and abilities like Spore or Poison Heal

I can't believe crygon hasn't banned the gold man yet. I don't follow stupid ass crygon rules, but while playing gen 9 random wifi battles, gold man is absolutely on way too many teams, is so useful that I'm shocked it wasn't banned in the first month.

I'm just surprised nobody decided to use Mamoswine to deal with Gliscor. I've looked at the OU list and Mamo would absolutely shred halve the list with a scarf set, don't even get me started on life orb or god forbid band.
I even did some calcs and if you give it brick break + Adamant, a scarf set is garanteed to 3 HKO Baxcalibur, while it can only 2 HKO with glaive rush, wich it doesn't use thanks to scale shot.
I know Terra's can flip the situations, but unless they use a ice or ground terra, they will be smacked around, especially if Mamo uses an offencive terra.
Mamo would be nice, but a scarf set just isn't powerful enough especially since Tera is a thing and Gliscor can just Tera into a defensive typing and tank ice moves while also knocking off that opposing pokemon's item. And other defensive mons like Alolamona and Milotic are amongst plenty of teams rn so Mamo would have a tough time using a scarf set. And it isn't fast enough to use other held items more effectively out of some niche items like sash rocks mamo (but at that point you're better off having a more reliable and durable rocker on ur team than mamo)
@@MikaleMahoe that is correct, but Mamo can also terra and while most would use an ice terra, if you use ground terra instead it wil guaranteed 2 HKO terra gliscor and defensive Milotic. it wont hid Aloma that had (4 hit with terra and scarf eq), but you can use a strong electric attacker for that.
the point I mostly tried to make is that mamo won't be easily switched into and it will dent the enemy team, it's mostly used to force switch-ins so other teammates can abuse it.
also to note even without scarf a max speed adamant mamo still outruns the most common gliscor, milotic, alomamola and other defensive mons, the scarf is mostly to revenge kill offensive teams.
Mamo is too prediction reliant and also dies too quick to spikes and rocks itself.

Main reason I stopped playing Gen 9 and started playing Gen 3. Whats the point of building teams only for main cores to get banned. I am actively being punished for not Running Gholdengo or Great Tusks because they have decided that they are the centralising Pokémon, meanwhile other viable pokemon like Gliscor/Sneasler are constantly threatened to be banned.
