What did it cost me to buy a New Look GMC bus?

  • This is the story of my first bus purchase. Unit 6738 is a 1972 New Look GMC bus I bought from the now defunct Campus Bus Service at Kent State in 2002. Even then this was a great price for a fully operational transit bus. I doubt any New Look has been available since or will be going into the future at this price. Of course the easy part was buying it......

    Hi I'm a former Transit Driver from Bpt Conn. You have to of the Best Busses GMC has ever built. The old Look and the New Look. Good Luck on your progress ... Just a little tip. When driving the two busses when turning the wheels do the push and pull method work's much better!🎉

    Campus Bus Service - the beginning of my part-time city transit driving at both Garfield Heights Coach Lines, North Olmsted Municipal Bus Lines, CTS & RTA. I enjoyed driving the 61 series buses during my employ at KSU. The 61 series and the 71 series later were great additions to the fleet and I am thrilled that you purchased one to save it and restore it. I've often thought about buying a GMC TDH4523 and painting it into the blue/gold paint scheme. They were great buses to drive and served CBS well. Congrats on saving a part of Kent State history. Best wishes in keeping them running. 👍🚌

    I enjoy your videos. Let's see--$753 to buy a bus, $110,000 to construct an awesome building to store it in. I'm going to build my shop first, then buy a bus.

    GMC New Look buses are getting rare in this day in age.
    Illinois Railway Museum acquired a 1966 GM TDH‐5303 bus for their collection in 2001. After 10 years, the management decided to cannibalize it for parts and got scrapped. It was in great condition.
    I hope that you'll get it running someday.

      I visited that museum for the first time a few years ago. I didn't realize they had such an extensive collection of transit buses. I was pleasantly surprised to see an articulated Twin Coach being from my neighboring city. While it's a shame to see any bus scrapped at least it was used to support other buses. I hope to revisit their museum in the future and maybe see a bus or two running.

    Wow, how cool! I used to drive that bus often for Campus Bus Service. How nice to see it again. Still looks good after all these years.

    Man, finding a running bus in this shape would be awsome. I'm still looking down here in Texas. I have found a couple of buses I like, but they aren't 521 dollars, yeah getting them back up in running order and safe to drive could get expensive. I wonder if an upgraded engine trans would be a way to go, at least you would be able to keep up with traffic.

    I spent many years on those Campus Loop buses, they’re why I fell in love with the Screaming Jimmys. I was sitting at a layover as a passenger at the ice rink on a bus and we got rear ended by another Gillig Campus Loop. They never called it in, but that New Look took it like a champ, didn’t even have a dent.

    Back in 2009 Edmonton Transit System replaced their fleet of New Look to New Flyer DL40’s and DL60’s. The New Looks for a time were white with yellow and blue accent stripes until they had the New Flyers in silver and blue and matched the GMC buses accordingly until their discontinued service. The GMC’s have some nostalgia to me but they don’t have the power and speed of the New Flyer’s Cummins Diesel.

      @Unit2345  3 роки тому +1

      Never had RTS's. The Gilligs came in the late 80's and stayed until the bus service shutdown in 2004. I don't think any were retired before that. As the last of the New Looks were parked they picked up some used Gillig's from Austin, TX.

    • @Unit2345

      Not 100% sure. The throttle pedal is frozen so at least that needs to be replaced.

    • @MichelleV503
      @MichelleV503 Рік тому

      Check out the Bus Grease Monkey on UA-cam and his separate forum. He goes through a lot of critical safety issues related to restarting those old Detroit Diesels. The throttle pedal being stuck down is connected to the injectors being frozen wide open. The engine could runaway and catch on fire if done incorrectly.
