  • I recently discovered an amazing dessert called MARQUESITAS that are sold by street vendors all around the Yucatan peninsula in southern Mexico. I was visiting a friend in Playa del Carmen and she insisted I try one. I'm so glad I did!
Marquesitas resemble crepes, however the batter tastes more like a thin ice cream cone. That's because they were supposed invented around 1930 by an ice cream vendor in Merida, Yucatan, who wanted to increase his sales during the cold winter months.
The batter is made with eggs, flour, oil, vanilla, milk and sugar. It's poured onto a hot crepe pan and turned often, resulting in a nice crunchy texture. Then you have your choice of toppings (usually Nutella, cajeta caramel, or sweetened condensed milk), fruits (usually banana, mango or strawberry), and topped with imported Dutch Edam cheese, which is called "Queso de bola" (Cheese ball).
