- John Barry Prendergast, was an English conductor and composer of film music. He is best known for composing the soundtracks for 12 of the James Bond films between 1962 and 1987. He wrote the scores to the award winning films Midnight Cowboy, Dances with Wolves and Out of Africa, in a career which lasted over 50 years.
Born in York, North Riding of Yorkshire, Barry spent his early years working in cinemas, owned by his father. During his National Service in Cyprus, Barry began performing as a musician having learned to play the trumpet. Upon completing his national service, he formed his own band in 1957, The John Barry Seven. He later developed an interest in composing and arranging music making his début for television in 1958. He came to the notice of the makers of the first James Bond film Dr. No who were dissatisfied with a theme for James Bond given to them by Monty Norman. This started a successful association between Barry and the James Bond films which lasted for 25 years.
He received awards for his work, including five Academy Awards; two for Born Free, and one each for The Lion in Winter (for which he also won a BAFTA Award), Dances with Wolves and Out of Africa (both of which also won him Grammy Awards). He was later nominated for a Golden Globe for best original score for the 1980 film Somewhere in Time. Barry completed his last film score, Enigma in 2001 and recorded the successful album Eternal Echoes the same year. He then concentrated chiefly on live performances and co wrote the music to the musical Brighton Rock in (2004) alongside Don Black. Barry was married four times and had four children. He moved to California in 1975 and lived there for the remainder of his life until his death in 2011.
God... this track transports my mind to another plane of existence. When I'm feeling suffocated by life's problems and duties I take a nice long midnight drive in my black on black Lincoln Mark VII down the streets and freeways of downtown Los Angeles while listening to this track. As I drive over the 105/110 interchange and see the city skyline come into view with that majestic mountain range as a background my heart opens up, accepting the grandeur of the scene before me. As I pass Walt Disney Concert Hall and see people in their tuxedos and dresses leaving the evening's concert as the city lights glimmer off the mirror like fascia of the hall, it fills my soul with a sense of elegance. I may not have been able to afford a ticket, but somehow I feel I was there. I drive through the streets, the lights of the city reflecting off my car's piano black exterior. People are walking, on dates, with friends out for a good time. I come home, turn my car off, and go back to my life feeling a little less stifled and more hopeful. I guess I just needed a breather, for my mind and body.
I thought I was the only one. 😊
John Barry is the world's greatest film music composer
I really miss John Barry.
Magnifique souvenir des dîners d'Ardisson!!!
Can we call this wonderful masterpiece jazz?
A symbiosis of beauty which is John Barry.
The bass line walks on water, the piano glides on the wind and the composition sounds like a perfect kiss feels...warm.
One of the most beautiful strings arrangement of the XXth century ! It's a real masterpiece.
Absolute Masterpiece, Elegant and Beautiful
The movie was on umpteenth repeat on TV tonight, & I remembered so fondly how this gorgeous dreamy track was used as the theme for a popular late night jazz show on radio here in Australia in the ‘70s & ‘80s. Wonderful memories!! ❤️
This piece and Michel Lagrand’s soundtrack from “The Thomas Crown Affair” are some of the best examples of mid century jazz . So evocative of this time period.
Legrand :)))
Absolutely gorgeous masterpiece.
I just never get tired of listening to this song from the movie Midnight Cowboy . The arrangement and the piano are so melodic and beautiful and the video comliments it Thanks John Barry
Never!

A Barry Masterpiece ! !
I grew up on this
Best experience on UA-cam.
Toujours parfait ce morceau de musique !
A masterpiece. So beautiful...
Beautiful memories, Manhattan!
Great song ! Such a romantic song !
he would have been 80 last Monday , what a loss and what a legacy he has left to us all
Sometimes... perfection exists)
Reflecting back to a time in New York coming out of the subway , and seeing for the first time the morning sun splashing up the side of the once tallest majestic building in NY skyline, Empire state building in its splendor. This sound track complementing the visual.
When I think of the word sophisticated, this sound is what goes with it, if you can assign music to the feeling of a word.
Such a gorgeous piece by maestro Barry, presaging the soundscape he would pursue the following year in the softer cues he composed for OHMSS.
Amazing video! I'll never forget when I arrived at this track when I bought the LP when I was a pre-teen. I knew my musical horizons as a farm kid had been altered. I played it to death (even though it is not used in the film). I was so thrilled I had finally found music that spoke to me. What a movie, what a score and soundtrack LP. And thanks for the great video.
You're quite welcome!
..the same for me..wonderful
ditto!
the best of life
Kudos to the person or persons who produced this video. It perfectly compliments the music, and is as much a pleasure to watch as to hear. Thank you for taking the time and effort to do this.
Thank you James Anderson, just one person here and that's it!
Yes....beautiful video to go along with beautiful music......thank you ! NYC born and raised :)
John Barry wrote so much great music. I love this piece in particular. Just wonderful. (I also enjoyed the accompanying video!)
This song is a masterpiece, no doubt about that.
Wonderfully relaxing,Superb
An old Polo or Ralph Lauren commercial brought me here. I can't find the commercial on here but this song always stuck out in my head.
Cool , exquisite and experly crafted little John Barry theme that's a delight to the ears and lsenses ! Perfect music to relax to when one gets a chance in this manic stressful maolstrum we call life !
Thanks for this upload ! ☺️
i have commented [always] favourably on mr barrys compositions/ and no change here // love the jazz influence / he could handle any score //
I first heard this one summer in 1976 while I was trying to pull in the distant and weak signal from WRFM, Stereo 105, out of Manhattan. I found the melody very captivating. I still have the tape recording in my archives for 43 years now, a little different rendition than this, but very similar.
I hear what you are saying. I first heard this in a Ralph Lauren / Polo commercial, and it stopped me in my tracks. Just so elegant.
Amazing. Beautiful. What fantastic and perfect visual to go with the instrumental.
It matches the music perfectly. The entire ebb and flow of the visual is like it was meant only for this instrumental. What a wonderful tribute to a great composer.
I consider this one of my best videos, thank you very much!

quelle merveilleuse musique
Great Video for this masterpiece song !
WOW!! NYC was my "home" for many years. This vid made me pine and cry for that wonderful place....the way it USED to be. GREAT VIDEO
WOW! NEW YORK! WE LOVE NEW YORK!
Even without the imagery provided by this great video, the music tells you where you are and only a sprawling, lively city would do...mountains, a seashore, a forest...it's not them, it's the music of the city.
Hey. I was impressed by the images and the correct timing of the music of maestro John Barry (Fun City), in this wonderful video made by you Congratulations!
Maravillosa...
I love John Barry and I love New York--the elegant, sophisticated music and the beautiful, seductive shots of Manhattan are intoxicating. Great video!
beautiful thankyou
Love this! Also loved Jon Voight in Midnight Cowboy - wow! Great music and great actor! Thank for positing!
the greatest cosmopolitan city in the world.
THE CITY of NEW YORK.
This great video is a masterpiece. And what a marvellous music !
Fantastica.
Uma viagem. Infinito ...
Effortlessly brilliant.
They removed this from Spotify, for some reason. I can only enjoy this on vinyl and UA-cam now 😂
same ....
Superb video, images worthy of the maestro's music.
I love everything about this track. It may even be my favourite John Barry composition.
Great video on The Big Apple and the beautiful music of the great John Barry.
Ooh well-done, the visuals actually add to it.
- Great, great video! I enjoy it so much, that I feel myself floating softly in it!... Sorry for my English.
It was a labor of love and I enjoy every moment of making it. Thanks and enjoy!
You have excelled with this, thanks
Who is playing piano on this??
That was beautiful. It's my fave song on the Midnight Cowboy soundtrack (even though I never could find where in the movie it's used, and I've seen the movie hundreds of times).
the scene may have been edited out for time. there was no dialogue between actors, just a few minutes of John Voight walking down the streets of the city by himself...probably about halfway thru the film.
Adoro essa música. Serena... tranquila... linda.
My deepness
Beautiful piece of à great Master. But why I never heard in the movie ?
my sentimental ...education

Along with Steiner none finer.🎼😊
Impossible to find it on Spotify
Is this used in the film?
This NEVER gets old...a beautiful composition! I tried to hear it while watching Midnight Cowboy but couldn't catch it. What part of the movie is it in?
I can't give you the minute in which it appears. the film at the point of music has no dialogue and is probably half-way thru the movie. John Voigt is walking alone through the city dressed in his western outfit. he's moving in and out of traffic along a street. the moment is made poignant by the fact that he is all alone in a city teeming with millions of people. I saw the movie when it first came out. Really made an impact given the mature themes, but it was this piece of music that remains most in my memory.
When I bought the soundtrack..which I still have the original copy, that was the music that nailed me as well. Barry did have a very lush side to him..another example is the lush strings in Thunderball...
How to define this music style? Is it still jazz?
I wonder if this is Barry's homage to Henry Mancini's "Dreamsville." They're very similar.

Just b/c a film-snob friend and I have been debating this for years: exactly WHEN in the movie is this song used?! (I have always said it never made it to the final cut.)
Yes it did, from the original which came out in the late 60s. you are probably correct in that it was probably cut as a time-saver as there was no dialogue between characters, just John Voight walking down a new york street,, filled with people, all by himself.
Is that from a movie?
Ronald Charles Epstein the piece of music is from Midnight Cowboy. If that is what you are asking.
Ja....Das sind Tatsächlich Bilder aus dem Jahre 1969.Warum....Der Nord Tum von World Trade Center wurde fertig gestellt. Erst 1970 Durften die Menschen diesen Turm nutzen. Der Süd Turm 1973. TUNAY ZONE MUSIC
