Personally, depending on the strength, adding a few drops of water can help open up a whiskey. If it's been thoroughly proofed down and chill filtered however, leave it neat. It's easy to drown a 40-43% whiskey.
You know what’s funny though…it isn’t just about proof though. Some whiskeys can have sharp edges even at 40% and can use a few drops of water to round off those spikey harsh notes that aren’t from proof.
@@VinegarAndSaltedFries that's true! I had a bottle of Benriach one time, forgot if it was 40 or 43. Very sharp and spirity, but with some water it calmed down.
I typically drink it neat and enjoy all the flavors of it, then immediately drink a second pour with one ice cube. Sometimes It completely changes the flavor profile. It’s silly not to try to get all he flavors to come out of your whiskey.
On the rare occasion I have ordered whiskey at a a bar I always get weird looks when I order it neat. They always ask me if I'm sure and if I know what neat means lol.

Correct, in a cold weather, having it neat is nice and fruitful, in hot, as in god damn its hot IN here hot, without ice its like drinking rubbing alcohol.
I usually drink all new whiskey neat and from there I add chilled stones, water or ice. If I'm at a function and they have something like Jim bean or even normal Jack then I go for the more mixing route and I pour ginger ale or Coca-Cola.
My favorite way is a round ice cube in a rocks glass. If you boil the water before putting in the ice mold, the ice will freeze clearer. Let the ice sit in the glass at room temperature for at least 5 minutes before adding the bourbon, which keeps the ice from cracking. I have bought some glencairn glasses to try drinking neat.

Hey Jeremy dry aging is much more complicated. You basically create a micro climate were moisture can escape and intensify the flavor of the beef. 28-45 days you’ll reach max tenderness of a dry aged steak. After that point (45 days and beyond) is when you’ll start to develop the funky\cheesy notes.
Ralfy suggested that once you add water, you should let it sit a minute for each year of age of the whisky. So you would let a 10 year age statement whisky sit for 10 minutes after adding water.
I like it neat. In Brazil it is a little weird to some people to drink it neat and see you drinking neat because most part of the time is hot in here and we don´t have a great whiskey drinking culture. In some places they fill your glass with ice and pour the whiskey under the top of the ice cubes and mess it up. Great content as always.
Thanks brother. Personally, I like to pour a little bottled water in a hefty whiskey tumbler and freeze it. This way the dilution is minimal but it still cools the burn a bit. I'm a bourbon man and I prefer this to ice cube(s) which seem to go away much more quickly...

My introduction to whisky was straight from the bottle while backpacking. I liked it a lot, and since I've tried various whiskies on the rocks or with water and regularly go back to drinking it neat (or in a mixed drink like a whisky sour). I've found for most whiskies that I've tried, adding ice waters down the actual whisky flavors and brings out the nail polish remover. I don't get the nail polish remover so much with a little bit of water strangely, but overall I just really enjoy most whiskies untampered with. I like the strength and variety of flavors, and just the unparalleled warmth of drinking it neat.

But do yourself tha favor of trying it neat first". I also dont generally play with those "high end" nosing glases, most of them are a waste of money
Most of the time I find myself drinking whiskey/bourbon with Ginger ale and lime, but I have my own rule when opening a new bottle that the first two pours have to be neat and then on the rocks. 🥃
I like my whiskey with Ginger ale as well but without the lime. I do, however, agree that the first couple of pours should be neat just to experience the whiskey and flavors itself, but I'm not a big fan of on the rocks or added water.
I do like to put an ice cube in my whiskey but for a different reason. When I start the glass there is that gorgeous flavor. As i drink it and the ice melts the flavor softens as I go. Then, when I refill the glass (adding a fresh cube) BAM! there is that big flavor again. Roller coaster for the mouth. :-)
Irish whisky, for me, is the best to drink on its own as its the smoothest, sweet, low/no burn, most flavour. Red Breast is one of the tastiest and my favourite, Middleton raw is great, but it's around 12 to 18 times more expensive than Red Breast. Scotch and bourbon are whiskeys that you have to add something to, for me, they're just not as nice as Irish whiskeys, it's like yhe Irish have perfected whisky. But I do enjoy bourbon and cola with a small cube of ice once in a while
Just found this channel and binge watched a few episodes! Scotch is good on the rocks too, all you need to do is find cheap and high proof scotches…..it’s a very short list. Wish they would make more.
I prefer whisky with one ice cube. I do like it neat as well, depends on my mood. I don’t really like to mix whisky, I love the flavor too much to mix it with coke or anything.. but as long as your drinking whisky, you are cool with me

I do agree that I also prefer the feel of a tumbler glass in my hand, but when I’m appreciating a Lagavulin 16 or an Ardbeg Uigeadail, then I prefer enjoying the Whisky out of a Glencairn glass. I’ve tried pouring just a shot or two into my favorite tumbler (similar to yours), but the Whisky for some strange reason (could just be in my head) tastes better out of the Glencairn glass. I always try my bourbon first in a Glencairn as well (neat of course) and then the rest of the bottle I will enjoy over a LARGE single cube in a tumbler. For Whisky I feel is crap, like Johnny Red, I’ll mix that crap in a highball with lime and ginger-beer.
I use my glencairn glass when I’m trying a new bourbon or scotch for the first time. After that I use my double rocks glass also neat. I have a firm believer in drinking your spirits which ever way you enjoy them but I will admit when I see someone mix old Forrester 1920 with a coke I kinda bang my head against the wall a few times
One interesting way of drinking whiskey that I've found that I enjoy is a bit of a variant on the classic Jack and Coke. I just change up both of the elements from the typical. One, I will use Jameson rather than Jack Daniels. It's just my preferred 'everyday' whiskey. The other change I'll make is that I'll use the Mexican Coca-Cola, with the cane sugar, in place of the high fructose corn syrup American Coke. I'll even, often, chuck in a couple dashes of chocolate bitters. Overall, I find it to be a really nice change-up to the pattern.
Depends on the Whisky 🥃 I would say, me, scotch without ice, maybe with water in a noose Glas, but I prefer Bourbon or Tennessee, in a Tumbler sometimes with a Icecube, Jack Daniels Single Barrel Single Proof, always with Ice….
I’m new to whiskey and have been drinking it with a large sperical ice cube in a curved tumbler like yours. It’s delicious at first, but I notice a nasty bitterness develops just as I get to the bottom of the glass. Is that a factor of dilution? The cube is reduced by then but still pretty substantial. I’ve noticed it both with bourbon and rye alone and in an Old Fashioned made with the same whiskey.

Are there any advantages or disadvantages to chilling the whiskey in the fridge and not adding g ice. Will they give you the chill you like without diluting the whiskey or does that change the whiskey in some way. New to whiskey and just wondering.
I’m no expert, but I like to taste it room temperature and undiluted first. Then a bit of water to open up the whiskey. That gives a wider range of flavors. If you start with a cold product, you may not be getting the full flavor profile.
Yes sir you are right "There is no particular way how to drink whisky The way how he enjoy" I personally enjoy, My way is 30 ml. single malt whisky (Glenlivet xxv) adding with full of water about 350 ml. and lots of ice on it in a Big beer mug, ( I enjoy this way) Im sure Im not wrong.
An old timer heard me order a Jack and coke when I was young, and told me, "you're better of mixing that with water". I laughed - and proceeded to drink them like that for years. By my late 30s - my guts were destroyed by it. I just drink it with water, now. lol The old timer was right. Just a heads up for those who like their Jack and coke.
Usually when I buy a bottle of bourbon that I haven’t had before, I will pour about a half of a shot glass and have a couple of sips to see how I like the taste.

I like my whiskey neat, stored in a fridge bc I like my whiskey cold. Hate on me all you want, but my whiskey of choice lately is Jack Daniels Honey, sometimes i make a whiskey drink with honeyjack, fireball and applejuice, taste like apple pie!
Nice content, very informative for new whiskey drinkers. I like a mid grade whiskey with a little 7 up . It bring the lime notes into the drink very well.
Single malt scotch is great Neat but I prefer it colder and will often ice it down. The first few sips are awesome flavor as it hasn't been "watered down" by the melting ice. As it gets sipped and the water melts down the superb flavor gets much diluted. But the next drink starts with the undiluted flavor again....Two or three of those over an hour and the sublime attitude is heaven on earth.

My favorite way is Neat" but on the Rocks" is my close second when I'm in the mood to take things slow with my whiskey,since my teeth are super sensitive to the cold and the ice forces me to take smaller sips,thus ensuring my drink last me at best 10 - 20 minutes.
I drink straight whiskey, and actually enjoy it. I love the taste of whiskey on its own. I want to taste it. Unencumbered. That is the simplest explanation.

I actually disagree with the ice making it easier for beginners. Personally when I started drinking whiskey, I instinctively started with very little sips of whiskey on the rocks, and I almost only tasted the alcohol and it made me want to puke. I eventually realized that I found it easier to drink large sips of room temperature whiskey. The flavor was much more complex and it kind of made me "forget" that I was drinking so strong alcohol. Now I always take it neat and I love it that way! As you said it's gonna change for everybody, but I would say to a beginner, don't be afraid to taste it!
Well said, I personally love my whiskeys neat. When I add ice, seems like the alcohol is the most present and more difficult to pull different flavors, I have messed with putting a tiny water to see if it opens but neat is my choice.
I like how you hold yourself back and told that everyone can drink whiskey as you think is the best way for you. I'm quite sure when I would visit your house and you'll pour a glass for me which I fill it up with coke, you would roundhouse kick me out faster than I understand what happened.

I drink my whiskey neat, with soda/water or with ice depending upon my mood. When the atmosphere is hot I put ice to make it like a "cool" drink I guess. And during winters and rainy season it's most of the times neat, sometimes add a little bit of water.
There are some whiskeys that I like super cold. Like Gentleman Jack. Anything for mixing, really. The cheap stuff. I like to store it in the freezer rather than diluting it with ice. And hey, if you DO decide to put ice in it, the fact that it's already super cold means the ice will melt slower and dilute your drink slower.
The right answer is however you enjoy it. I personally prefer to drink my whiskey neat or with a little water to open it up depending on the ABV. I like to appreciate it and that's how I enjoy my whiskey
Good stuff all through. I concur. Ice is the only thing I do not use as it waters it down more than I can control. I use quite a lot of water when drinking it. Always neat when testing the 1-2 sips. Then water. Then- I go Octomore only today after years of searching for what I like and enjoy.

I’ve seen about seven or eight already and will be looking out for more. Two things I would add to your video is the use of whiskey stones which are fantastic for making your drink cold while not diluting it. The other is drinking your whiskey neat at a party is going to get you drunk a lot faster then on the ice so depending on your mood and how much you want to enjoy the party increase or decrease your ice accordingly. 😊

I use a zero water filter and even make my specialty round ice cubes with the water from that. I also have some whiskey stones that I’ll stick in the freezer for some of my lower proof whiskey’s I wanna drink neat but prefer to drink cold versus room temperature. I really love drinking blanton’s single barrel neat but throwing a cold stone in it definitely makes it hit differently
There are so many great ways to appreciate whiskey. I even sometimes get it on the rocks, if I know I'm going to be having a long, long talk and want to make it look like my drink lasts forever. But I really wish people would stop giving me "whiskey stones". Those things just don't work.
Well here's my take, if you're drinking a single malt then its neat, or ice or water to taste, but if its a blended like Bells, Grants, Teachers , White and Mackay etc then neat if you like or coke, Canada dry etc, but mixers with a single malt is sacrilege.
Dang!! I've been appreciating whisky for over forty years. I wish you were around for all those years! For the most part, I'm hearing what I've learned over those years. It is great to know that I'm not too far off the mark . I do specifically use a Glen Carin glass for taste testing as it is a benchmark for me. It may not always be right, but it is a constant. I'm a rum fanatic and I use the same principle when introducing my customers to a new quality rum. Try it neat first to decide how you want to alter it, if at all. But at the end if the day if they want to throw some cola in it to enjoy the drink then that's how it is. Bottoms up 🤙

I agree with giving it a little taste undiluted before adding ice, to see what it's like pure, but I like my whiskey cold. That's why I add ice. To me it would be like cooking a steak without salt because I like a salty steak.

personally, i like with Coca-cola but i respect the whiskey. for that reason i use the 1 to 1 ratio but instead of going full part with Coca-cola i cut in half with a good fizzy water like San Pellegrino or else. like that the Coca doesn't cover the taste of the whiskey but i keep the fizzy pleasure as if i went full Coca. so the final result is 1 part whiskey + 1/2 part Coca + 1/2 part fizzy water. cold but not fresh. like around 50 to 60° F. i call that "basement cold". but that's only for the everyday usage. for tasting, i always go neat at room temp.
Ive been drinking bourbon for 2 yrs. And i have given neat a serious try and all i get is the alcohol burn so i have kind of resigned to big ice. I do agree unless its at leas 100 proof its diluted too quickly that way. Good video!
That's a balanced conclusion Jeremy. As a starter, why not take a neat sip and evaluate the virginity ! The mix-and-match with or without rocks comes next. Quality of water is important as you say. I find a small dash of soda mix very satisfying. 👍
I like it (Buffalo Trace) neat, with a Montecristo cigar. But truth be told, sometimes I like to drink it with an ice cube with some sparkling water, a squeeze of lemon and a splash of honeydew melon juice. However, I wouldn’t do that with good bourbon. I do that with Nikka Black.
I have the same opinion as the MB’s of the Whisky Tribe. All I say is, while normally drinking things neat, when it was 36 degrees Celsius here, I sure as hell put a nice round ice cube in my bourbon.

I’d be cautious about tap water, unless you filter first. Because in the UK I can at times smell chlorine.

You could try it chilled. It's great because you enjoy your whiskey cold but without the ice to dilute the alcohol.

You can put whiskey in the freezer. I don't know if connoisseurs would condone it but it will be ice cold and won't freeze.

I like my whiskey with Ginger ale as well but without the lime. I do, however, agree that the first couple of pours should be neat just to experience the whiskey and flavors itself, but I'm not a big fan of on the rocks or added water.
This is the way
I do like to put an ice cube in my whiskey but for a different reason. When I start the glass there is that gorgeous flavor. As i drink it and the ice melts the flavor softens as I go. Then, when I refill the glass (adding a fresh cube) BAM! there is that big flavor again. Roller coaster for the mouth. :-)
Irish whisky, for me, is the best to drink on its own as its the smoothest, sweet, low/no burn, most flavour. Red Breast is one of the tastiest and my favourite, Middleton raw is great, but it's around 12 to 18 times more expensive than Red Breast. Scotch and bourbon are whiskeys that you have to add something to, for me, they're just not as nice as Irish whiskeys, it's like yhe Irish have perfected whisky. But I do enjoy bourbon and cola with a small cube of ice once in a while
Just found this channel and binge watched a few episodes! Scotch is good on the rocks too, all you need to do is find cheap and high proof scotches…..it’s a very short list. Wish they would make more.
I prefer whisky with one ice cube. I do like it neat as well, depends on my mood. I don’t really like to mix whisky, I love the flavor too much to mix it with coke or anything.. but as long as your drinking whisky, you are cool with me

When I see a guy like you, smoking a respectable cigar and drinking whiskey, I do subscribe. Glad I found you man.
I do agree that I also prefer the feel of a tumbler glass in my hand, but when I’m appreciating a Lagavulin 16 or an Ardbeg Uigeadail, then I prefer enjoying the Whisky out of a Glencairn glass. I’ve tried pouring just a shot or two into my favorite tumbler (similar to yours), but the Whisky for some strange reason (could just be in my head) tastes better out of the Glencairn glass. I always try my bourbon first in a Glencairn as well (neat of course) and then the rest of the bottle I will enjoy over a LARGE single cube in a tumbler. For Whisky I feel is crap, like Johnny Red, I’ll mix that crap in a highball with lime and ginger-beer.
I use my glencairn glass when I’m trying a new bourbon or scotch for the first time. After that I use my double rocks glass also neat.
I have a firm believer in drinking your spirits which ever way you enjoy them but I will admit when I see someone mix old Forrester 1920 with a coke I kinda bang my head against the wall a few times
95% of the time I’m using the “smoke and barrel” glass. It really is a great design.

One interesting way of drinking whiskey that I've found that I enjoy is a bit of a variant on the classic Jack and Coke. I just change up both of the elements from the typical. One, I will use Jameson rather than Jack Daniels. It's just my preferred 'everyday' whiskey. The other change I'll make is that I'll use the Mexican Coca-Cola, with the cane sugar, in place of the high fructose corn syrup American Coke. I'll even, often, chuck in a couple dashes of chocolate bitters. Overall, I find it to be a really nice change-up to the pattern.

Depends on the Whisky 🥃 I would say, me, scotch without ice, maybe with water in a noose Glas, but I prefer Bourbon or Tennessee, in a Tumbler sometimes with a Icecube, Jack Daniels Single Barrel Single Proof, always with Ice….

Why not both. When I’m trying a new whiskey, I drink it neat to get a better flavor profile. I’ll drink it with ice for just casual drinking.
I’m new to whiskey and have been drinking it with a large sperical ice cube in a curved tumbler like yours. It’s delicious at first, but I notice a nasty bitterness develops just as I get to the bottom of the glass. Is that a factor of dilution? The cube is reduced by then but still pretty substantial. I’ve noticed it both with bourbon and rye alone and in an Old Fashioned made with the same whiskey.

I love my bourbon with ginger ale ,I do have it neat as well right half the time but now I'm enjoying bulleit with ball of ice with some ginger ale just gives it a new taste
Are there any advantages or disadvantages to chilling the whiskey in the fridge and not adding g ice. Will they give you the chill you like without diluting the whiskey or does that change the whiskey in some way. New to whiskey and just wondering.
I’m no expert, but I like to taste it room temperature and undiluted first. Then a bit of water to open up the whiskey. That gives a wider range of flavors.
If you start with a cold product, you may not be getting the full flavor profile.
Yes sir you are right "There is no particular way how to drink whisky The way how he enjoy" I personally enjoy, My way is 30 ml. single malt whisky (Glenlivet xxv) adding with full of water about 350 ml. and lots of ice on it in a Big beer mug, ( I enjoy this way) Im sure Im not wrong.
An old timer heard me order a Jack and coke when I was young, and told me, "you're better of mixing that with water".
I laughed - and proceeded to drink them like that for years. By my late 30s - my guts were destroyed by it.
I just drink it with water, now. lol The old timer was right.

Usually when I buy a bottle of bourbon that I haven’t had before, I will pour about a half of a shot glass and have a couple of sips to see how I like the taste.

Hate on me all you want, but my whiskey of choice lately is Jack Daniels Honey, sometimes i make a whiskey drink with honeyjack, fireball and applejuice, taste like apple pie!
Nice content, very informative for new whiskey drinkers. I like a mid grade whiskey with a little 7 up . It bring the lime notes into the drink very well.

Single malt scotch is great Neat but I prefer it colder and will often ice it down. The first few sips are awesome flavor as it hasn't been "watered down" by the melting ice. As it gets sipped and the water melts down the superb flavor gets much diluted. But the next drink starts with the undiluted flavor again....Two or three of those over an hour and the sublime attitude is heaven on earth.

My favorite way is Neat" but on the Rocks" is my close second when I'm in the mood to take things slow with my whiskey,since my teeth are super sensitive to the cold and the ice forces me to take smaller sips,thus ensuring my drink last me at best 10 - 20 minutes.
I drink straight whiskey, and actually enjoy it. I love the taste of whiskey on its own. I want to taste it. Unencumbered. That is the simplest explanation.

I like my whiskey and scotch chilled. Big ice cube, sip as the ice melts. You'll get different levels of flavors.

I actually disagree with the ice making it easier for beginners. Personally when I started drinking whiskey, I instinctively started with very little sips of whiskey on the rocks, and I almost only tasted the alcohol and it made me want to puke. I eventually realized that I found it easier to drink large sips of room temperature whiskey. The flavor was much more complex and it kind of made me "forget" that I was drinking so strong alcohol. Now I always take it neat and I love it that way! As you said it's gonna change for everybody, but I would say to a beginner, don't be afraid to taste it!
Well said, I personally love my whiskeys neat. When I add ice, seems like the alcohol is the most present and more difficult to pull different flavors, I have messed with putting a tiny water to see if it opens but neat is my choice.
There’s nothing wrong with sipping it, it’s a distilled alcohol so ur gonna taste some alcohol.

I drink my whiskey neat, with soda/water or with ice depending upon my mood. When the atmosphere is hot I put ice to make it like a "cool" drink I guess. And during winters and rainy season it's most of the times neat, sometimes add a little bit of water.

There are some whiskeys that I like super cold. Like Gentleman Jack. Anything for mixing, really. The cheap stuff. I like to store it in the freezer rather than diluting it with ice. And hey, if you DO decide to put ice in it, the fact that it's already super cold means the ice will melt slower and dilute your drink slower.
The right answer is however you enjoy it. I personally prefer to drink my whiskey neat or with a little water to open it up depending on the ABV. I like to appreciate it and that's how I enjoy my whiskey

I’ve seen about seven or eight already and will be looking out for more. Two things I would add to your video is the use of whiskey stones which are fantastic for making your drink cold while not diluting it. The other is drinking your whiskey neat at a party is going to get you drunk a lot faster then on the ice so depending on your mood and how much you want to enjoy the party increase or decrease your ice accordingly. 😊

I use a zero water filter and even make my specialty round ice cubes with the water from that. I also have some whiskey stones that I’ll stick in the freezer for some of my lower proof whiskey’s I wanna drink neat but prefer to drink cold versus room temperature. I really love drinking blanton’s single barrel neat but throwing a cold stone in it definitely makes it hit differently
There are so many great ways to appreciate whiskey. I even sometimes get it on the rocks, if I know I'm going to be having a long, long talk and want to make it look like my drink lasts forever. But I really wish people would stop giving me "whiskey stones". Those things just don't work.
Well here's my take, if you're drinking a single malt then its neat, or ice or water to taste,
but if its a blended like Bells, Grants, Teachers , White and Mackay etc then neat if you like or coke, Canada dry etc, but mixers with a single malt is sacrilege.
I love shooting straight whiskey, but I can't lie. I love whiskey and ginger ale. (Canada dry). I'm always sipping on that.
Dang!! I've been appreciating whisky for over forty years. I wish you were around for all those years! For the most part, I'm hearing what I've learned over those years. It is great to know that I'm not too far off the mark . I do specifically use a Glen Carin glass for taste testing as it is a benchmark for me. It may not always be right, but it is a constant. I do test a new whisky neat, after which, If over 80 prof I'll water accordingly. Thanks again for your insights! Much appreciated.
I'm a rum fanatic and I use the same principle when introducing my customers to a new quality rum. Try it neat first to decide how you want to alter it, if at all. But at the end if the day if they want to throw some cola in it to enjoy the drink then that's how it is. Bottoms up 🤙

The problem with ice is you risk winding up with bourbon-flavored water. Just add a little water to maintain a consistent pour.
I personally rate the cooling stones that you put in the freezer.

I agree with giving it a little taste undiluted before adding ice, to see what it's like pure, but I like my whiskey cold. That's why I add ice. To me it would be like cooking a steak without salt because I like a salty steak.

I drink 45% bourbon “neat” but I don’t taste anything but the burn and it just tastes like medicine, any tips on how to enjoy it
personally, i like with Coca-cola but i respect the whiskey. for that reason i use the 1 to 1 ratio but instead of going full part with Coca-cola i cut in half with a good fizzy water like San Pellegrino or else. like that the Coca doesn't cover the taste of the whiskey but i keep the fizzy pleasure as if i went full Coca. so the final result is 1 part whiskey + 1/2 part Coca + 1/2 part fizzy water. cold but not fresh. like around 50 to 60° F. i call that "basement cold".
but that's only for the everyday usage. for tasting, i always go neat at room temp.
Ive been drinking bourbon for 2 yrs. And i have given neat a serious try and all i get is the alcohol burn so i have kind of resigned to big ice. I do agree unless its at leas 100 proof its diluted too quickly that way. Good video!
That's a balanced conclusion Jeremy. As a starter, why not take a neat sip and evaluate the virginity ! The mix-and-match with or without rocks comes next. Quality of water is important as you say. I find a small dash of soda mix very satisfying. 👍
I like it (Buffalo Trace) neat, with a Montecristo cigar. But truth be told, sometimes I like to drink it with an ice cube with some sparkling water, a squeeze of lemon and a splash of honeydew melon juice. However, I wouldn’t do that with good bourbon. I do that with Nikka Black.
I have the same opinion as the MB’s of the Whisky Tribe. All I say is, while normally drinking things neat, when it was 36 degrees Celsius here, I sure as hell put a nice round ice cube in my bourbon.
