Lands of Lore is one of the last classic type of FP RPGs and one of the lightest when considering game rules / interface. The game is extremely polished and could be considered as a culmination of the sub-genre. At about this time the step-by-step mechanism was being overtaken by free movement system of games such as Ultima Underworld and System Shock.
I was a bit ambitious to start on maximum difficulty so I soon switched back to normal. I didn't use any projectile weapons for increasing rogue level. Later on I realized there were few chests I couldn't open because of poor rogue level. I skipped few non-important areas and long grind bonuses on purpose.
I did one section out of the screen. I went back to White Tower entrance to get back emerald blades before the dungeon level, because I hadn't realized before I might still have use for those. Then again, I could've easily managed without the blades. Meanwhile I also rearranged my inventory and dropped lots of items such as all healing potions I had been carrying around up until this point.
I included all morph forms of the last boss in the end after the end credits. She can't be beaten if she has time to change shape before the 'whole truth' is used. -

Smooth nostalgia :) This was my introduction to RPG games, together with Ishar 2 and Might and Magic 5. We played this game back in high school, in the mid 1990s. We had no sources of information here in Eastern Europe, so it was trial and error. We spent weeks trying to finish the game, each on our own, and we shared any tips on progress. We did not discover you can use those emerald blades to fight ghosts in the White Tower, so we just grinded it out and ran thru as fast as possible, trying to minimize the brutal onslaughts (that music is forever linked to this experience)... Or to get lost in the Urbish mines, trying to figure our what is next... Discovering you can freeze the swamp and reach new areas... Fighting unending wasp swarms... Getting the random rare drops such as the crown on the first floor of the tower, or the extra kite shield...Or the way I somehow created (and was able to re-create, so maybe it was not a bug but an eastern egg) an "illegal item" by placing a specific halberd to Baccata's hand in the swamp, basically enabling him to carry three weapons till the end of the game (one "baked in" and invisible, increasing his base attack) and increasing his attack even further, bringing him to lev 9 or 10 on fighter... I remembered all of it :) And to see the game can be finished - with knowledge of the story, mechanics and events - in an afternoon, is entertaining... Good memories, the game is a masterpiece - consistent visual style, story, music, gameplay... The middle part, where you had access to many areas - forests, mines, the Tower... and you had to figure out what to do, is really close to today's open world games. But it was tied together with narrative and atmosphere. And I got to experience it during the formative high school years, where you really could dive deep into these games and everything was somehow better :) Oh well, nice trip down the memory lane, after 27 or so years here in 2022.

My grandparents bought this game some 15-20 years ago, knowing they had a PC and knew I was a PC gamer. Whenever I visited them when they still had their PC as a kid, I would always be excited to play it.

I used to play this with my uncle who is no longer with us, and I was wracking my brain for months trying to remember the name. This brings back so many good memories. I totally forgot Patrick Stewart was involved with this game.

This and Betrayal at Krondor are one of the finest games all time. Looking at the current technology at the time and how well polished the games were, in terms of detail, story, speech, music and gameplay. True gems that I always get goose bumbs from. Also, just seeing this video on youtube got me saying "rings look tarnished and neglected" - one of the phrases that just stick into my mind of this.

Working on a first person grid based dungeon crawler with 4 party member system right now and honestly Lands of Lore is one of the greatest sources to reference from. It doesnt just randomly place enemies and etc... it has a very story focused series of events. I like it a lot and its quite open
