Hi Davy, just watched my new print of Created Woman today on a new T.V. and then monsters den starts (I forgot, but great timing)Love the Monsters Den!
Thought I'd miss Alo on this but this was an amazing look at the classic horror and Davy Gallacher especially stands out as MVP on old school horror. He should be writing books on this shit. This kind of knowledge and presentation is why many of us watch all the SOT shows instead of TV. Every show has an MVP who nails it and gets you pumped. Alo on Squares or Popoff on that show or Luis. I don't know prog well but look forward to his takes. If this was a TV Network you wouldn't get better presenters. I've only seen the first two and maybe bits of others on TCM. Will be checking them out now. Thanks Pete for bringing us this. We had a bit of a storm in Ohio this week and I had some insurance damage from a tree. I needed some escape. Thanks to all. Pete, Davy, Dan and Jamie. Look forward to Alo being back too.
Thanks as always to the Monster's Den panelists for an engaging discussion of the Frankenstein Hammer films. Have only seen a few of these but this may push me to see the rest. Thanks again, guys.
This was a classic Den. When it's old-school and Davey and Dan are there, you know it's sitting under the learning tree. They just rattle off knowledge. I've learned a lot about classic film from them. Jamie as a newb to a lot of oldies gives fresh eyes to it. And Pete is the Nick Fury - assembles the Avengers of Horror! Him and Davey doing a bit just about Michael Ripper, a bit part actor, shows how much they love and know these films. You can tell these guys are just loving the conversation as much as we are. Love Chris but I feel like if he had to miss any eps, I'd rather it was this stuff than his wheelhouse of 70s and 80s grindhouse and exploitation. I don't think it's out of line to say he adds less to the older school stuff. He's The King but even Royalty can't do it all. We have such a class crew here and this was a perfect ep - fun, entertaining and full of passion. I, and I bet loads of others, want to watch these NOW.
1. The Revenge of Frankenstein 2. The Curse of Frankenstein 3. Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed 4. The Evil of Frankenstein 5. Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell 6. Frankenstein Created Woman 7. The Horror of Frankenstein
I appreciate as was mentioned that you stood down from this one for not being very familiar. Better than cramming just to be on a show then not really know the material which is more obvious when people like Davey and Pete do But would still like a "newbie" perspective sometimes - but Jamie said he was seeing almost all of these from new so two guys new to it may have been overkill in this case. What eras and sub-genres would you say you are on that top tier of being able to talk about with deep knowledge? Chris and Davey it's easy to think what their real area of not just love for movies but where their deep knowledge is - I feel like you and Jamie are harder to pin down. Look forward to you being back Mr K!

Love The Monsters Den guys
Yes, I touch on the films having at least 3 continuities and that Evil and Horror are reboots (though tbf, not hard to spot that one!). what would be interesting, although theire home video existence are virtually non existent would be a ranking show on the Hammer rival companies.. Tigon, Tyburn maybe even AIP..just a thought
Love the idea but it may be an issue for a few reasons. Tigon did just over 20 films and most are out on disc in the UK but I know that's not the case elsewhere. I've just done a vid on the new 4Ks of Witchfinder General and Blood On Satan's Claw and Body Stealters, Beast In The Cellar and Hannue Caulder are coming soon. Not sure how familiar the other guys would be outside of Witchfinder and Satan's Claw though - ,a lot of their stuff was much more Brit-centric like the film version of Doomwatch. Tyburn's best - and they didn't have many films - are tied up in rights issues. The Ghoul and Legend Of The Werewolf are two biggies not on disc. When they are, I'll be making vids on them for sure. HUGE entries on my want lists. Then there's Robert S. Baker's films - he directly tried to copy Hammer in the 50s - Blood Of The Vampire, Jack The Ripper, The Hellfire Club - but just not sure the other guys would be massively familiar with this stuff, or enough to make a vid of it. AIP we've kinda done the best of with a lot of talk about Corman and Price. Anglo-Amalgamated would be up there to talk about too - I've done a vid on the recent blu of Horrors Of The Black Museum but there's Circus Of Horrors, Escapement, Peeping Tom, Invasion and, of course, the Chris Lee Fu Manchu films. I'd love to do all this stuff but we need at least Pete and a couple of us to be well enough versed in it to fill an hour.
Wow very different lists from you guys this time. I noticed that the only 2 films that weren’t in anyone’s bottom 3 were Curse and Destroyed which I completely endorse since they are my top 2 favorites. 👍
Davy, I was cringing right along with you! I was sure everybody's bottom 3 would be the same as yours and mine. My worst was "Horror", though. I have no time for a Hammer "Frankenstein" without Cushing.
I love Ralph Bates. I admire the film for what it is rather than what it isn't but yes, I was kinda shocked Evil was in no-ones bottom section. Among Hammer fandom it very much is the black sheep.
@@LarryFleetwood8675 Yes, there's a nice feel in Evil to the scenery and Freddie Francis is a great visual director. But the script is just not there. This series is so good because of the ideas and chances it takes with each film. Evil doesn't take any. It's safe. And safe is always dull.
My ranking: 7. Horror of Frankenstein. Hammer's Frankenstein is Peter Cushing, not Ralph Bates! 6. Evil of Frankenstein. Freddie Francis' films always look good, but they never seem to completely work. And the monster makeup is awful. 5. Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell. A flawed, but fitting ending to the series. 4. Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed. This would be a great film without that rape scene. 3. Frankenstein Created Woman. Fantastic. This and the next 2 are 3 of Hammer's best. 2. The Revenge of Frankenstein. It's so good it could be (and sometimes is) my number one. 1. The Curse of Frankenstein. The one that started it all.
How would everyone rank the Universal/James Whale Frankensteins against the Hammer versions? I'd have to put the original and Bride right at the top of the list, as much as I love Cushing and many of the Hammers.
1. Curse of Frankenstein 2. Revenge of Frankenstein 3. Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed 4. Evil of Frankenstein 5. Frankenstein Created Woman 6. Horror of Frankenstein 7. Frankenstein & the Monster From Hell
Revenge has always been strangely underrated, I could never understand why as it's a wonderful film in Hammer's classic fairy tale style of that time. To be honest though, I think the Blu-ray of Revenge isn't so great looking I actually prefer its old DVD but it was never as good looking a Hammer film - as far as color production - that it could and should've been. It looks great otherwise but Curse looks better, I've tried watching Revenge in b&w and surprisingly enough it works excellently that way it adds greatly to the mood and suits the story much better than the dried up Technicolor we're used to which they boosted oddly on the Blu-ray. Incidentally, it makes a fitting double feature with the same year's b&w Corridors of Blood with Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee and Francis Matthews (from Revenge) making them kind of fit neatly together, visually if nothing else.
1.The Curse of Frankenstein. 2.Frankenstein created Woman. 3.The Revenge of Frankenstein. 4. Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed. 5. Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell. 6.Evil of Frankenstein. 7.The Horror of Frankenstein.
The correct answer for worst Hammer Frankenstein is of course Horror of Frankenstein. Blah. While The Evil of Frankenstein isn't top notch Hammer (though it is fun), the interesting thing is each of the successive Cushing Frankensteins follows from there. None of them go back to the Curse/Revenge storyline.
1. Destroyed 8/10 2. Curse 8/10 3. Monster from hell 8/10 4. Created Woman 7/10 5. Revenge 7/10 6. Tales 7/10 7. Evil 5/10 8. Horror 5/10 It’s been a long time since I’ve watched tales so rating may be off. I enjoy most of the Frankensteins but they’re not in my favourite Hammers.
whoops wrong ranking..Evil, Revenge, Monster from Hell,Horror, Must be destroyed, Created Woman ..and Curse..the reason Revenge is low is Wordsworth acts like an extra trying to get noticed , still, they are all great films, except Evil
Technically and objectively, first one is the best but I have a soft sport for F. Created Woman, I like how sleazy and over-the-top it is for 60s Hammer standards, as well as Susan Denberg's delightfully impossible cleavage - followed by F. Must Be Destroyed, which portrais the baron at his most relentless and evil, only time I've seen gentleman Cushing commit a sexual crime on a movie. Least favorite is Monster, hairy rubber suit and big kissing lips on the creature look ridiculous, and young doctor actor dude is no Simon Ward.
Shane Briant was a bit of a Hammer fave about this time. I agree he's no Simon Ward but he never got scripts like Young Winston and The Musketeers films tbf. There's a film called Corruption where Cushing commits an even more explicit sexual assault and it was honestly too weird for me trying to reconcile him with some really OTT sleaze. Tender Dracula has him do some...different stuff too. As does Bloodsuckers (also known as Incense For The Damned and Freedom Seekers). I don't recommend any but it's interesting he did have this few years where he did make those kind of films.
They said he was at WWE. This is one kind of show he's not missed for, or Craig really. Both are better with eras after this. Can't imagine anything being added to this ep which was top tier Den.
1. Frankenstein must be destroyed. 2. The Revenge of Frankenstein 3. Frankenstein and the monster from hell 4. Frankenstein created woman 5. The Curse of Frankenstein 6. The Evil of Frankenstein Ahm no listing that Ralph Bates shite!
I have a show suggestion for you that I think will be extremely fun. I think all of you should choose a horror movie for your wives to watch, and then they should review them on the show. Could be hilarious!

I love Ralph Bates. I admire the film for what it is rather than what it isn't but yes, I was kinda shocked Evil was in no-ones bottom section. Among Hammer fandom it very much is the black sheep.
@@DavysFlicks Best thing about Evil is the cool cold mountainous setting, I love that. And of course, Caron Gardner in bed or tight dresses...
My ranking:
1. Curse of Frankenstein
2. Revenge of Frankenstein
3. Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed
4. Evil of Frankenstein
5. Frankenstein Created Woman
6. Horror of Frankenstein
My own ranking:
Must Be Destroyed
Monster from Hell
Created Woman
Curse
Revenge
Evil
Horror
Must Be Destroyed would be my number one as well. Curse would be second
Love hammer thank you
Love Hammer, and Curse of Frankenstein is probably the best. Side note: have you ever considered a Wes Craven ranking? Could be interesting
We did do a whole Wes Craven themed episode about 3 years ago.
@@seaoftranquilityprog Ah, that's a while ago. indeed. Thanks.
1. Destroyed 8/10
2. Curse 8/10
3. Monster from hell 8/10
4. Created Woman 7/10
5. Revenge 7/10
6. Tales 7/10
7. Evil 5/10
8. Horror 5/10
It’s been a long time since I’ve watched tales so rating may be off. I enjoy most of the Frankensteins but they’re not in my favourite Hammers.
Could you do a show on sequels and what makes them good or bad? With examples thanks 😁
Must be destroyed is my fav.
whoops wrong ranking..Evil, Revenge, Monster from Hell,Horror, Must be destroyed, Created Woman ..and Curse..the reason Revenge is low is Wordsworth acts like an extra trying to get noticed , still, they are all great films, except Evil
I was not playacting...I was legit shocked I was not just the only one to have Evil bottom but that no-one else had it bottom 4!
Wasn't it Spongebob that did the gross close ups?
Corruption is indeed WAY over the top!
Wheres the king 👑?? Missing Alo.
They said he was at WWE. This is one kind of show he's not missed for, or Craig really. Both are better with eras after this. Can't imagine anything being added to this ep which was top tier Den.

Ahm no listing that Ralph Bates shite!
Evil of Frankenstein is far & away the worst of the series.
Damn straight!
Nope!
I have a show suggestion for you that I think will be extremely fun. I think all of you should choose a horror movie for your wives to watch, and then they should review them on the show. Could be hilarious!
