Me too. Hercules Unchained inspired me at 13. I still lift 3 times a week at 68, but I stopped using heavy weights a long time ago. I use moderate weights to keep in shape. I'm only about 8 pounds over my high school weight. Steve Reeves inspired a lot of kids to take up bodybuilding.

When I was a youngster I idolized this man, like all the other kids on my block. He was the epitome of what we should be physically. All I can say now is rest in peace. There will never be another Steve Reeves, just like there will never be another Bruce Lee or Muhammed Ali.

One of the very best bodybuilders ever. He and Reg Park were the pioneers of the modern sport. The Reeves physique was so aesthetically pleasing that other guys aspired to it. Before he died he tried to appeal to Arnold to clean up the sport out from drugs and HGH. I mean who wants to look like these mass monsters we have today? Frank Zane idolized Reeves and was the last Mr. Olympia to look like him. These days its all steroids and HGH. Ghastly to look at.
I agree with Steve on his acting. Not bad, actually. And he had charisma. I 'specially like the famed Reeves head turning when he scans the horizon. In Mystery Science Theatre (you can get the dvds) the commentator robots say things like, 'What's wrong with his neck?" Or in another movie with another bodybuilder: "I like Steve better. He's shinier." One of his classic head scans is in 'Jason and the Argonauts' and he's at the bow of the ship. I was surprised to learn that he was offered to play James Bond, but maybe turned it down because he wasn't confident in his acting. He was offered The Man With No Name, but he said he didn't think Italians go do westerns! But seemed like a very regular, good guy. And with those genetically square pecs. The epitome of classic muscular form, not the fakes of today.

Steve Reeves still looked super handsome even in his mid-late 50's! I can only hope to look half as good at that age. And for these Old School Bodybuilders - Bodybuilding was just as much about being healthy and strong as it was about having lots of muscle mass. Nowadays, with the heavy PED use, many drug using bodybuilders are dropping dead in their 50's, 40's - and even 30's! Those Old School Bodybuilders lived healthy lives and would pass away in their 70's and 80's - some are even in their 90's and STILL training hard.
Never really cared for Hollywood critics. They destroyed Arnold in Conan the Barbarian and look at him now. is he a great actor? probably not. But he has that gift that made him an Icon on the movie business even with his pronounce accent. Sometimes all you need is to be different.
I still lift weights Olympic and power lift also incorporate bodybuilding so it is a lifelong goal for me , this is my 50th year of lifting at 64 .. And I have never used Steroids !! Just lots of hard work !!!
I was lucky to get an autographed copy of his Powerwalking book (not dedicated to me unfortunately). If his program had come out during the internet era, it would have started a revolution in exercise.
Tyrone was so beautiful. He aged rather quickly though like Alain Delon. He was trained as a fencer by his mother at the age of 6, & could hold his own against Rathbone in The Mark of Zorro. He later developed heart problems but instead of getting it checked, he did a film that required strenuous heavy sword fighting against someone without any training whatsoever, & so he had to keep doing the same fight over and over 2x, the first with the inexperienced actor who kept making mistakes & the 2nd with his stuntman, his heart gave out in the middle of it.
He looks great in his 50s & looking very healthy. Makes sense to stop lifting weight after a certain age bec it will only be detrimental to your health. A lot of other bodybuilders are often in very bad shape during & especially after they retire.
Reeves was indeed humble. He wasn't necessarily the most eloquent speaker, so that may have ultimately limited his Hollywood potential. Eloquent isn't the same thing as articulate, necessarily. They dubbed a voice for his Hercules character. I read he was offered the main role in the dollar trilogy movies but turned it down. Some guy named Clint Eastwood was the second choice and ultimately got the role. He also passed away at 74, a bit young given his health orientation.

Yeah but not Free weights like 110 LB Dumbell Incline Bench Presses and 400LB Squats and 75 LB Dumbell Curls like he did Training for the MR Universe . Steve could not go heavy because of an injury he received doing a stunt in one of his Films ,he just trained light to keep in shape
I believe you might be referring to his 400 lbs pinch-grip deadlift, done to show detractors that he was strong, even though his "real" training was for a balanced physique, not heavy lifts. A long-legged, 6'1", 212 lb-er, slim by today's standards, Reeves trained with multiple sets of fairly high reps, not 400 lb squats. His movie injury was to his shoulder, which didn't deter him from decent weights on his Universal Gym on most exercises. He used the machine regularly his entire middle-age & senior years, and was always WELL-beyond merely "in shape"..
Im Yu he always ate healthily. He did free weights once a year every year after his shoulder injury ... during his competitive bodybuilding career he did do 400lb sqauts for a total of thirty reps each session three times a week

I love steve reeves, he even invented power walking. my only beef with him is he should have done at least a third Hercules movie. If he had done five of them, it would have been smart--considering the number of sequels they have today. he was the only Hercules like Errol Flynn was the only robin Hood.
In 1959 Reeves made 5 movies, Hercules Unchained was one of them, but it was The Last Days of Pompeii that he injured his shoulder which never healed properly and curtailed his making Hercules type movies.

Second interview i have seen now and he was ahead of his tine. He practiced visualization of his muscles during exercise and now with power walking.

In 1959 Reeves made 5 movies, Hercules Unchained was one of them, but it was The Last Days of Pompeii that he injured his shoulder which never healed properly and curtailed his making Hercules type movies.
