I decided to do a Deep Clean of my Cabinet after finding Ants and Moldy Pegboards! So gross! It really needed a good cleanup and it looks soo much better now! I've had my cabinet up for about 8 months and I definitely won't be putting them back in.

I use my cabinets for hoyas but my planty friends had ants in theirs and they blamed it on the floral nectarines on ariods! Which makes sense, that’s what floral nectarines attract in nature.
ah yes that makes total sense! 🤯 I wonder if the anthurium attracted them too with all the inflos I was getting in there. Thanks for sharing that!
Sometimes ants follow mealies and the nectar they produce.

Ants are looking for food. I have had them eating leaves on my money tree, strings of hearts and since some are next to a window, I found them in my cover pot of my staghorn. We have newer windows but they are finding a way in. I put some borax and sugar on the sill so fingers crossed.
Hello, Its always a great feeling to clean out the cabinet! Happy 2023! We used to have ants a few years ago and we use terro ant killer. If you see more, just put a tiny piece of cardboard in the cabinet and place a drop of it on there and in a few days the ants will take the terro to their nest and will no longer show up. It is not like an aerosol or anything so it's fine to use indoors. Also, I bought my first moss pole like the plastic ones you use. I plan on putting my young silver sword on it. If you're ever interested in getting pegboards again, I really highly recommend the acrylic ones from Modern Aqua! They brought my Milsbo to the next level aesthetically, and there's no risk of mould.
Hi Melissa. I love the IKEA cabinets. So perfect for our plants. It’s nice to take time to deep clean periodically as you can see we do t know what could be happening in there. You did a great job with the cleaning. I have two cabinets and the shelves do get stains that you cannot get rid off. With plants, I feel we are always doing something with them. Never a dull moment. Hi Melissa 💚 I immediately thought about your beneficial insects you put in your cabinets when you mentioned the ants.. not entirely sure but could be the beneficial insects.. 💚🪴
the beneficials attracting them? it's interesting! others have mentioned the sap too and my anthuriums were producing a lot of inflos inside.

I had ants in a pot full of ghost plants before. Had to take all of them out (like 30+) rinse them throughly, remove all the soil, and repot them back. If you notice a plant’s soil has risen then you have ants.
I use Diatomaceous Earth in all corners and baseboard of my plant room and patio area. It really does help. Also window sills. Good luck with this.

Hey Melissa, IME if you have ants coming in too your plants, keep close eye on where they are traveling too. Usually they are after excretions from scale or Aphids. 💚 Cabinet looks awesome 😍
Thank you! I did a thorough clean of my plant room and inspected my plants after I filmed this and didn't see anything concerning. They seemed to have disappeared I haven't seen any the past couple days but I'm definitely still checking!
Ants often seek refuge inside our homes when there is a lot of rain. If you can't find where they originated, they are likely not an infestation, but lost marauder sugar ants, seeking refuge from rain. They are easily and quickly removed and most likely will never return. I don't like ants in my house, but garden ants in my plants, eat aphids and other plant munchers in my outside garden. Fire ants are another story ... lol. Happy New Year! Thank you for the video, I don't have any plant cabinets but they are realy lovely, a lot of work, but, some plants seem to really thrive in them. Yours is beautiful!

We have had ants. They tried colonizing our paradise plant. I lit it on fire Lol I actually took it outside and did a complete rinse down to bare root. I guess ants aren't a huge problem to the plant itself. We just didn't want ants in our house
That’s what I was thinking too. Those ants loved the environment and wanted to make it there new home.

I recently moved away from Richmond Hill, GA.. for the almost 3 years we lived there I had to have 3 dehumidifiers running in different areas of the house because mold grows really fast there inside & outside (I get really bad allergic asthma from mold why we had 3).. even with the 3 dehumidifiers (that i emptied twice a day) my plants did great.. as for the ants they are everywhere.. be careful if u bring plants in from outside & with buying soil that’s kept outdoors.. the gnats are crazy there too.. we had a problem with wasps, ant’s, & beetle that would sometimes come up out of the sink drains or tub drains.. ant baits work great with a combination of making a habit of closing drains after using them & regularly running hot water especially after rain.. frogs would also sneak in and try to make plants near doors or windows their home (even with screens).. we lived in new construction and also had a lot of armadillos (carry disease humans can catch), venomous snakes, opossums, and some gators that would show up at the back door.
Sounds like our area for sure! We have alligators in our lagoon area and lots of other critters. I'm definitely going to be more cautious this year about outdoor plants. We haven't been here a full year yet but definitely some things to think about with keeping pests out. I appreciate it!!

I chose to use acrylic skadis backdrops because it’s easier to clean and would not be as susceptible to mold like fiberboard Skadis

Magic eraser seems to remove any rust that forms in my cabinet. Also on Etsy there r acrylic pegboards and shelves. Expensive but beautiful

Try clear rust oleum on the rusty spots. Should stop the rust.

why but I freaked me out too. I did some research at the time but I forget what the reasoning was. But ya, I was disgusted too 😂😂
Some others are saying because of the nectaries on the plants with the sap! It makes total sense!! Hopefully, they will be gone soon!

I had ants on a monstera deliciosa over the summer. There was some kind of sticky stuff on the petioles and the ants were eating it. I cut the offending leaves off and it never came back. I have no idea what it was.

If you're not sure where the ants are coming from bait traps may help. Seeing your gorgeous anthirium makes me want to try one, are there any easier ones that still have silver veining?
It's interesting to see that you removed the pegboards. I really like the pegboards but the more I look at cabinets, the more I see the pegboards and accessories are more a hindrance than anything as the plants grow. Is that why you removed them ultimately, shelf space is more useful?
Yes, as the plants got larger there wasn't enough room to hang plants. I really liked them in the beginning though. I think if you keep smaller plants in there it would work well but large plants get squished easily especially the anthuriums!

several have mentioned the sap (extrafloral nectaries on the plants) that they're attracted to. It makes sense!!
@@plantsbymelissa never thought of that. I have a lot of plants giving of that sap. I guess I need to wipe the plants down more often
I had ants living in just one plant in my greenhouse window out of the blue. I took cuttings and tossed the plant

You gotta find where they’re coming in the house. Then out any bait right there. The ants will be attracted, eat it and die. They will tell the other aunts where the ant bait was and then more and more ants die. DO NOT put the ant bait in your cabinet or it will attract ants vest in the room.

I love it!! I prefer it over moss now to prop :)
It dries quickly in my space it’s the only negative but I can keep it watered so it works for me :)

The ants are attracted to the floral nectaries.
I dont think they are harmful to the plants.
