I totally agree with MatPat. We shouldn't HAVE to read the books to understand anything. I loved it when you just hopped in the game and you had to actually find clues and secrets IN THE GAME. It's so much more fun and it makes you be prouder of your work because YOU FOUND IT YOURSELF. Now we're just basically reading the book and calling it "a theory" it's so exhausting and shouldn't be mandatory.
Yup, like whatever happened to leaving letters and recrdings in the game that reveals more of the story? Or even cutscenes with a mini-game or flashback? Yeah, it sucks if used excessively but way better than putting the lore in an entirely different paperback book.

I really do appreciate that Matt, one of the leaders in over theorizing back in the day, is calling out how insanely obscure, convoluted, and indecipherable ARGs or even just normal “mystery” games have gotten. If I need a 10,000 character Reddit post to guide me through how to properly interpret and consume 3+ forms of media to understand your story that isn’t clever writing, that’s insanity. It isn’t _lazy_ as it requires more effort, but it’s a “worker harder without working smarter” sorta thing that helps no one… Except of course the IP owners.
4:20 Gosh I always enjoyed that Psychic Friend Fredbear jingle. It's also nice seeing more theories that made our childhoods before MatPat's inevitable passing the torch moment and retiring, it's a nice touch.
I resonate SO much with MatPat's thoughtd at the end The over relayance in books that "May or may not be canon" or "May or amy not have canon tid bits we wont ever clarify" is exhausting and just makes it unenjoyable I gebuinely miss when you could rely solely in the games to understand the story and piece the narrative, it feels like Deltarune and Undertale are the only games from "that era" that have stayed true to this sentiment, all major and important things and virtually wverything relevant to the story is maintained solely on the games themselves, and any extra material, like the Spamton Sweepstakes moatly adds some background and connections that likely wouldn't fit in the game (like Noelle's story with Spamton) or just easers for the future, like "find her" with what we presume is Dess' guitar, everything else is immediatly findable in the game itself, and at worst, the files of the game

That's one of the reasons why I love Bendy so much. Yes they have books as well, but they're mainly bonuses for me. The few question they answer really are why Bendy has a big hand and limb as well as who is Boris from Chapter 3. They're used to fill the pieces from the game, not the other way around.

Matpat resumed my frustration simply with all the mascot horror games recently : You can no longer understand what's going on in there without ulterior media, ulterior **paying** media. External source material from the mainline series should only serve to either add intel that isn't a requirement to understand the story, or stuff that helps recontextualize some events. Even back then, if it wasn't for the books, "Purple Guy" would have stayed "Mr. Afton" (we only learn he's named William in the books) and Henry Emily would be nameless.

If your game needs you to buy books or a streaming subscription just to know what's going on, you don't have a story and I personally feel your game suffers. I appreciate channels like The Game Theorist that go through and do this so others that aren't as interested or have the funds to do so don't have to just so they can understand what's going on.
Honeatly so true that so many theories are just recaps of the books that I'll likely never read. It's a bit of a pain to watch or play something and then have to look up a lore video on it just understand what happened. This is why I think games like Iron Lung are getting popular, minimalistic and self contained

I got into fnaf when security breach came out, did my best to watch all the videos about fnaf game lore while waiting for ruin, and when that dlc came out i was simply just confused. I remember the video MatPat did couple of years ago why he didn't respond to tinyBuild devs about Hello Neighbour, for the reason devs keep changing plots and routes they were going with the games just to mess around with theorists. I feel like FNAF and the MCU have had the "homework" problem as of very recently. That being said Marvels last movie "the Marvels" was the first movie to truly get hindered by it being based on 3 shows and only Ruin got that problem where some fans who watches Mark and not Matpat won't know who the Mimic is. Hello Neighbor seemed like it wanted to artificially keep hype going and eventually prolong its relevance as a childrens horror game through books alone. Scott Cawthon made the book problem most likely because he was passionate about making a story that didn't end in an animatronic jumping you. Kids horror games like Bendy and Hello Neighbor saw that FNAF was successful and assumed it was because the lore is stripped from the games and required to buy in the books as a marketing strategy.
Which shows? Truthfully, I think I am tuning out of the MCU, which is sad because I watched every movie, in theaters, until Quantumania, where I couldn't afford tickets. Still, I've missed more than one movie and show now. I felt Captain Marvel was a pretty weak character and movie, and Brie Larsons' attitude was grating, so I am less than hyped to see another title featuring her. I imagine Ms. Marvel is something I should watch first. That looked decent. What else is it based on?
Yeah its really a big issue, especially in the mcu, but with fnaf is just as confusing if not more because from what I heard the books weren't cannon but now all of a sudden they suddenly were cannon but not all parts of the books are cannon just some aspects. Like its just really confusing.

I got a theory! At 9:25 you started talking about the writting in the game. I heard that the main charachter that we play with is actually dyslexic and that is the reason why in games the words are all messed up for example: Missing /Simming. In books we are not in the POV from the main charachter and that is why in books and the short movie words are in normal english.
Most things in the gane hint that Nicky is dyslexic, the jumbeled letters and the iconic "simming" posters. This might be why his grammar in the trailer is not perfect.
Aye that's a stretch. Huge difference between completely misspelling "missing" into "simming", versus a small grammar mistake while misusing the common phrase "gone missing". And why not spell & say "simming" now? Dyslexia theory could be true but I think this is just a bad script. It was probably "had gone missing" but they cropped out "had". Matpat's being picky on this, I don't think it's LORE.

the way that mascot horror side-books should be done is like how bendy does it. The bendy books are creepy, interesting's novels that tell stories that could be cannon, could not be cannon, but ultimately don't affect the games. sure they'll give you more info, but they're just there for those who want to read them. all the stories of the games is in the games.
Speaking of Marvel: that was the reason I stopped reading comic books. Used to be, a person could pick up a single comic, read it, and enjoy it on its own. Yes, it helped to have an understanding beforehand, but was not necessary. Then they made it so that there were arcs, which was fine, but made it more difficult. Someone had to read multiple issues for a single storyline. As they did, the managed to keep it to the same comic, and have it three or four issues. Now, however, it seems like every comic takes place over numerous issues, and multiple titles. So much so, that a person would have to buy MULTIPLE trade collections just for a single story from start to finish.

I agree with MatPat when it comes to Games vs Books of a franchise. That is one reason I have pretty much given up on solving FNAF. Is its because you have to rely on the books to get anywhere, and it becomes so anger inducing because you should be able to solve everything from the games, and the books help elaborate on those game mysteries. Not the other way around.
Actually, that's wrong. You can solve FNAF with just games, but sometimes books "spoil" you the future of the games, because of the releases. But FNAF can be solved with just games. I do agree it's gotten kinda complicated with the books and everything, tho.

That's completely separate. The scene you are describing is a symbolism to the Brother pushing Mya Peterson off the rooftop of their own house. The girl who died in the roller coaster is Lucy Yi (a different character who didn't even exist at the release of the original game), and what happened with her was completely different.
Theodore Peterson is much like William Afton in regards to the fact we've never heard either character referred to by their 'full name' before in the games. Closest William got was "Mr. Afton", and closest Theodore got was 'Mr. Peterson' in that video.
I believe the mixed up letter words in the games was to show the signs of a concussion from being knocked out by the neighbour or it could be to demonstrate that our character as dyslexia or a reading difficulty
I have my own theory on the strange language in the alphas: in Hello Neighbor, both the main release and some of the alphas and betas, the text is in English, but its all jumbled up and does not make any sense (as stated in this video). My theory is that Hello Neighbor is all a dream, this is because that scientists have proven that in dreams, you are unable to read, so everything looks like words, but its all jumbled up. Plus, your character in the games is always seen falling asleep and waking up (prime example is the end of the cutscene and beginning of the actual act in Act 3). And that is my theory on Hello Neighbor.

Hello neighbor seems like a franchise where the creators stumbled onto a really interesting and fun partly because it was unfinished and mysterious. But had no idea what to do with what to do with that foundation. So they just stuff all that space with lot's of lore and questions without a really strong direction. Like the series Lost, where the power was all in the set up, only to have it all fizzle out as those interesting questions turned out to be nothing more than random spooky bs that actually made no sense.

I gebuinely miss when you could rely solely in the games to understand the story and piece the narrative, it feels like Deltarune and Undertale are the only games from "that era" that have stayed true to this sentiment, all major and important things and virtually wverything relevant to the story is maintained solely on the games themselves, and any extra material, like the Spamton Sweepstakes moatly adds some background and connections that likely wouldn't fit in the game (like Noelle's story with Spamton) or just easers for the future, like "find her" with what we presume is Dess' guitar, everything else is immediatly findable in the game itself, and at worst, the files of the game

That's one of the reasons why I love Bendy so much. Yes they have books as well, but they're mainly bonuses for me. The few question they answer really are why Bendy has a big hand and limb as well as who is Boris from Chapter 3. They're used to fill the pieces from the game, not the other way around.
Find out who's Boris seems like an important part of the story that should be in the game.

Matpat resumed my frustration simply with all the mascot horror games recently : You can no longer understand what's going on in there without ulterior media, ulterior **paying** media.
External source material from the mainline series should only serve to either add intel that isn't a requirement to understand the story, or stuff that helps recontextualize some events.
Even back then, if it wasn't for the books, "Purple Guy" would have stayed "Mr. Afton" (we only learn he's named William in the books) and Henry Emily would be nameless.

If your game needs you to buy books or a streaming subscription just to know what's going on, you don't have a story and I personally feel your game suffers. I appreciate channels like The Game Theorist that go through and do this so others that aren't as interested or have the funds to do so don't have to just so they can understand what's going on.

I feel like FNAF and the MCU have had the "homework" problem as of very recently. That being said Marvels last movie "the Marvels" was the first movie to truly get hindered by it being based on 3 shows and only Ruin got that problem where some fans who watches Mark and not Matpat won't know who the Mimic is. Hello Neighbor seemed like it wanted to artificially keep hype going and eventually prolong its relevance as a childrens horror game through books alone. Scott Cawthon made the book problem most likely because he was passionate about making a story that didn't end in an animatronic jumping you. Kids horror games like Bendy and Hello Neighbor saw that FNAF was successful and assumed it was because the lore is stripped from the games and required to buy in the books as a marketing strategy.
Which shows? Truthfully, I think I am tuning out of the MCU, which is sad because I watched every movie, in theaters, until Quantumania, where I couldn't afford tickets. Still, I've missed more than one movie and show now. I felt Captain Marvel was a pretty weak character and movie, and Brie Larsons' attitude was grating, so I am less than hyped to see another title featuring her. I imagine Ms. Marvel is something I should watch first. That looked decent. What else is it based on?

At 9:25 you started talking about the writting in the game. I heard that the main charachter that we play with is actually dyslexic and that is the reason why in games the words are all messed up for example: Missing /Simming. In books we are not in the POV from the main charachter and that is why in books and the short movie words are in normal english.

Speaking of Marvel: that was the reason I stopped reading comic books. Used to be, a person could pick up a single comic, read it, and enjoy it on its own. Yes, it helped to have an understanding beforehand, but was not necessary. Then they made it so that there were arcs, which was fine, but made it more difficult. Someone had to read multiple issues for a single storyline. As they did, the managed to keep it to the same comic, and have it three or four issues. Now, however, it seems like every comic takes place over numerous issues, and multiple titles. So much so, that a person would have to buy MULTIPLE trade collections just for a single story from start to finish.
I started reading Marvel novels instead of graphic novels. Saves money and contains full stories.

I agree with MatPat when it comes to Games vs Books of a franchise. That is one reason I have pretty much given up on solving FNAF. Is its because you have to rely on the books to get anywhere, and it becomes so anger inducing because you should be able to solve everything from the games, and the books help elaborate on those game mysteries. Not the other way around.
Actually, that's wrong. You can solve FNAF with just games, but sometimes books "spoil" you the future of the games, because of the releases. But FNAF can be solved with just games.

That's completely separate. The scene you are describing is a symbolism to the Brother pushing Mya Peterson off the rooftop of their own house.
The girl who died in the roller coaster is Lucy Yi (a different character who didn't even exist at the release of the original game), and what happened with her was completely different.
Theodore Peterson is much like William Afton in regards to the fact we've never heard either character referred to by their 'full name' before in the games. Closest William got was "Mr. Afton", and closest Theodore got was 'Mr. Peterson' in that video.

I believe the mixed up letter words in the games was to show the signs of a concussion from being knocked out by the neighbour or it could be to demonstrate that our character as dyslexia or a reading difficulty

I have my own theory on the strange language in the alphas: in Hello Neighbor, both the main release and some of the alphas and betas, the text is in English, but its all jumbled up and does not make any sense (as stated in this video). My theory is that Hello Neighbor is all a dream, this is because that scientists have proven that in dreams, you are unable to read, so everything looks like words, but its all jumbled up. Plus, your character in the games is always seen falling asleep and waking up (prime example is the end of the cutscene and beginning of the actual act in Act 3). And that is my theory on Hello Neighbor.

@@UndeadPlayer1 But Secret Neighbor can't really be canon. Contrary to VR Search & Rescue which is the "canon Secret Neighbor", and no storm in this game. Secret Neighbor have lore elements, but we can't really tell how it fit in the timeline(s) (Yes because there are 2 or 3 timelines)

Hello neighbor seems like a franchise where the creators stumbled onto a really interesting and fun partly because it was unfinished and mysterious. But had no idea what to do with what to do with that foundation. So they just stuff all that space with lot's of lore and questions without a really strong direction. Like the series Lost, where the power was all in the set up, only to have it all fizzle out as those interesting questions turned out to be nothing more than random spooky bs that actually made no sense.
