You escaped, and then years later you moved back to the neighborhood and had a nightmare about his house returning, and had a dream about conquering our fears or something??
Here's a proper explanation: Essentially the neighbor was originally a sane person, with a wife and 2 kids, a boy and a girl, one day the neighbor suffered a car accident, which killed his wife, thie led him into depression, and his son also being heavily by it, he started getting violent with his sister whenever he losed a game (they played alot), until one day, they went to play hide and seek, the daughter hid in the roof, and once the son finally found her, he was absolutely enraged, leading to him accidentally pushing his own sister of the roof in a moment of anger. The neighbor, with his mental health basically being non existent at this point, traps his own son in the basement, both due to his anger, but also the fear of losing his only family member. This leads to the events of the game, most especifically act 1, hello neighbor: Search and Rescue, act 2 and hello neighbor 2. in act 1, we play as a close friend of the neighbor's son, nicholas roth, or nicky for short hello neighbor: nicky's diary shows nicky had already noticed the absence of his friend, the way he and his father acted, something suspicious was going on and he knew it, but he only really started exploring the house after the first cutscene, he's just playing with his beach ball but hears a loud scream which appears to be of a child, coming from the neighbor's house, as he goes closer to try and see whats happening, it is possible to see the neighbor kidnapping someone (im assuming aaron escaped and the neighbor captured him) and looking out the window to see if anyone saw him or heard the screams (he probably didnt see us), then the game starts, nicky enters the basement by getting this red key to the lock. And what does he find in the basement? Nothing. Yes, nothing. Nicky is then captured by the neighbor, and is trapped in a room. for some reason, a weird cardboard cutout unlocks the door for him. Idk whats the lore relevancy of this, because nowhere do we see any mention of alive cardboard cutouts in the neighbors basement. And it also isnt the neighbors son. My theory is that this is the squad helping nicky, since in hello neighbor search to rescue, the squad frees nicky with the help of the guest. But im not entirely sur about, Did they just changed the story midway through the final release and hide and seek? (The game where were releaved to the backstory of th neighbor) idk maybe. But even then its really weird, after this nicky escapes the basement only to find out the neighbor built a giant fence so he cant escape. The house is also double the size now. Finally nicky escapes the neighbor's house. Which leads to the events of hello neighbor 2 and whatever happened after that useless cliffhanger, essentially quentin arrives, explores the neighbors house, the bakery, the manor and the taxidermist's house to get acess to the museum where the neighbor is hiding (possibly because nicky called the police or smth), he frees the neighbor's son, crow statue falls in the neighbor, aaron tries to save his father and someone bonks quentin (possibly a forest protector) and boom. Game ends. Now, its act 3 and 4, essentially, after the events of the first and second game, nicky, now as a grown adult is expelled from his appartment, so he returns to his old house in raven brooks, the house where the neighbor lived has been burned to the ground. By going closer to it, a cutscene plays with nicky exploring the remnants of the neighbors burned house, but he sees a weird shadow creature which makes he run to the other side of the street, already going to say this, but the shadowmman isnt a demon, nor the devil, nor the guest, nor the neighbor brother, nor aaron, nor whatever, he's nicky's representation of the trauma he lived as a child, or in other words, its just an hallucination. Lame right? Ik. Nicky gets a phone call and hallucinates more with the shadow man, then he falls asleep and wakes up in a dream, the neighbor's house is back and bigger than ever, he goes through a bunch of really bad and poorly tought out puzzles and enters the basement again, its literally the same thing but now with a small appearence of the shadow creature, the basement is just a check to see if you're with all the habilities from the fear levels (not going to talk about those because they're bad and unecessary). After that, you go to a room with a bed and a cardboard cutout (most likely is supposed to represent aaron) and then a giant neighbor appears and breaks the house entirely, you're now in a white void. And has to parkour your way to the house in the neighbor's back. After entering the house. You go through some weird parts and to the final section. With nicky having to protect his younger self of the shadow man. Which makes you bigger and bigger until the shadow man is defeated (or aka, you finally overcome your trauma). Nicky wakes up from the dream and the end. Well, im not sure if you'll like the lore or not, that's up to you. But for me. The original story that was being alluded to was way better and interesting than what we got.

Here’s an interesting consideration - what if the whole “breaking into the house” thing is a metaphor? Let’s say that the house is symbolic of the neighbor’s mind, and then you, as the player, have noticed that something is deeply wrong with it (the neighbor’s general creepiness). So you are trying to get the neighbor to tell you what’s wrong by asking him questions that lead him to talk to you without realising. Every time he catches you in the game emulates each time he realises what you are doing and gets you to go away. That’s why he doesn’t bury you outright straight away, only when you reach the door (what’s bothering him) does he seal you off forever (burying you). Probably not true, but still, thought it was an interesting idea!

The Neighbor buries his daughter and not wanted to lose his son (his only family left) and locks him in the basement. Unfortunately because the neighbor has lost his mind the son starves to death. That's the background and lore that I found, pretty dark stuff.

There's a hello neighbor book! It turns out when the developers said "your returning to your childhood home" it's not the neighbour's house, it the one your moving into, when your character was about 12 he lived in that same house. And, the neighbor wasn't a clown, he designed theme parks. Edit: the book is called "hello Neighbor: missing pieces", also, I believe another book just came out, I forgot the name though...

Yeah. his "Arrow to the knee" theory created an entire conspiracy around medieval surgery. When in actuality, "taking an arrow to the knee" meant that you are getting married/already got married. But we really can't bag on him too much. He does say "its just a theory", like all the time.

actually Hello Neighbor doesn't have any lore it's the most simple story ever, just some people extremly overthinking it. also there are a lot of game with better lore than FNAF, just try Petscop, Fran Bow, and Little Misfortune.
or, the man in the picture is the playerr, years before when they were still growing who lost is his child and wife to the neighbor(unknown reason) and he wishes to get them back. Or it could be a Saw type thing where he has to kill either his family, him, or the neighbor. The ways i see it, it is still too early to make assumptions and matpat's jumping on the hype train

I never thought about this before, but the hiding room could be in the basement to protect the family from would be ‘rescuers’. He may have brainwashed them that if anyone comes down they need to hide, or maybe they don’t want to be found. She may have screamed when they got checked on, worried that the player was the one who opened the door.
So here’s a theory: When playing “Hello, Neighbor” and you get into the basement, you’ll notice that you only hear a woman and children screaming. Nobody else. If the children are really the kidnapped woman’s biological mom, than maybe they are the neighbors family. The neighbor and the kidnaped woman had a two (maybe one I’m pretty sure you hear two different child sounding screams but whatever) children, but they abandoned him. Left him alone in there old winding house. Any normal person would try to move on, if needed get a therapist, ex. Okay good. But the neighbor isn’t the most stable guy, now is he? Instead of moving on, he kidnaps them. Makes sure they can never leave again. Maybe the neighbor does more.......... sexual things to the children’s mom. I didn’t look into the logistics of this theory, but if I where you I would look deeper into it.
The clown art shown at 8:55 seems quite clearly to be a tribute to the clown from Stephen King's move "It" in my opinion. So overall not 100% with the carnie theory.

There's a hello neighbor book! It turns out when the developers said "your returning to your childhood home" it's not the neighbour's house, it the one your moving into, when your character was about 12 he lived in that same house. And, the neighbor wasn't a clown, he designed theme parks.

I never thought about this before, but the hiding room could be in the basement to protect the family from would be ‘rescuers’. He may have brainwashed them that if anyone comes down they need to hide, or maybe they don’t want to be found. She may have screamed when they got checked on, worried that the player was the one who opened the door.
So here’s a theory:
When playing “Hello, Neighbor” and you get into the basement, you’ll notice that you only hear a woman and children screaming. Nobody else. If the children are really the kidnapped woman’s biological mom, than maybe they are the neighbors family. The neighbor and the kidnaped woman had a two (maybe one I’m pretty sure you hear two different child sounding screams but whatever) children, but they abandoned him. Left him alone in there old winding house. Any normal person would try to move on, if needed get a therapist, ex. Okay good. But the neighbor isn’t the most stable guy, now is he? Instead of moving on, he kidnaps them. Makes sure they can never leave again. Maybe the neighbor does more.......... sexual things to the children’s mom. I didn’t look into the logistics of this theory, but if I where you I would look deeper into it.
