The Last Day of Harvest!

  • After a very stressful and what felt like at times never ending harvest, we finally found the 12 rows we were looking for. As my dad said over the radio in the video, we’re very grateful that we didn’t have any equipment or grain setup breakdowns the entire season. We’re even more grateful to have had a pretty good year all things considered!

The last 10 seconds were classic! The man walking away from his equipment in the darkness, toward home, knowing the crop is safely in storage. Do not miss the story told in these 10 seconds. Great catch Erin!

The last pass in the combine has always been bittersweet for me, its nice to be done and the crops in the bins, but being in the combine has always been my favorite thing. I enjoy planting, and spring and fall tillage, spraying and anhydrous , someone else can do if they want, lol, but being in the combine, just never gets old. Only 1 fall was I ever glad to be done, I think it was 93, but we had a late frost had to mow the tops off the corn in June I think it was, which we lost all the canopy and weed pressure got bad, because there was no roundup corn back then. Then harvest was a bit wet, a neighbor combine caught on fire, so I shelled a couple hundred acres he had, and was shelling corn on New Years eve trying to finish up with it sleeting snow, and the sieves were plugging, so stopping to clean them out, and go a little farther before having to stop again. That yr is the only year when I was glad to park the combine in the shed and be done, lol.

Congrats to you and your team for a harvest well done. One of the things I love most about you is no grandstanding, no cutesy model type poses and not trying to be someone you are not. You come across as just you with beautiful brown eyes and a big sincere smile. Hope that cough leaves soon so you can enjoy a great Christmas. God bless you and thanks for sharing the excitement of the end of harvest.

You can see the genuine joy in your face. You truly are someone who loves the land and all it can provide if cared for. As for that cough, mix 10 drops of lemon with a teaspoon of honey, take it as often as needed. Now if you're brave, there's no doubt you are, take a medium onion, dice it up, take 3 cups of honey and heat up over the stove in a pot. Take care not to have the heat too high and stir often. When it's dissolved, turn off the heat and add the diced onion, stir, cover the pot and let sit over night. The next day, warm the mixture until the honey thins. Next pour the mixture over a bowl with cheesecloth or use a strainer to catch the onion. The honey caught is now a cough syrup on steroids', hint you may want to still add a few drops of lemon to each teaspoon. Oh and avoid anybody that doesn't like onion breathe. This was one of my grandmothers cures. Sending prayers for your return to good health. Take care and stay safe. You mean a lot to all of us out here.

The feeling is the same, whether you farm acres by the thousand, or individually, if your equipment is brand new, or 40-60 years old, the last day of harvest is as much of a relief as it is bittersweet.
This year, we finished up our corn, then a couple weeks later one of the landowners we had corn on asked us if we would run his corn for him, since he was having some health issues and couldn't find good help. We dove right in with our 1967 model John Deere 95, retrofit feederhouse, and 444 corn head. Unfortunately we had a spring break that tensions the belt for the clean grain elevator, and Deere says it's an obsolete part, so currently trying to source one of those. Also had a bearing go out on the beater shaft, which I just finished replacing this evening. Soon as we find a spring, and a little more dry weather, 20 more acres and we'll be DONE done with #harvest21.
