Let’s Shoot Gas!

  • A little late (a lot late) due to just being super busy this spring and also being under the weather a lot here lately, but better late than never, am I right?? The rest of the spring videos will be out asap.
    Before we start planting, we have to make sure everything’s ready to give us the best crop year Mother Nature will allow. In this case it means putting on anhydrous ammonia to provide the much needed nitrogen for growing corn.

    I was a First Responder and in our training we learned that one gallon of anhydrous ammonia will make 55 gallons of vapor. Cold storage facilities usually have the most liquid ammonia on site. If there is ever a leak, go upwind!!!!

    • @jtsfarmengines6633
      @jtsfarmengines6633 2 роки тому

      You also can’t fill a tank past 85% cause if it expands it’ll reach the point of expansion through the pop off. The pop offs have to be changed every 5 years to keep in spec. Many years ago in the Terra International days a plant somewhere had a tank go past capacity due to a fault pop off and the welds of the one end shell failed and it ended up over a mile away.

    Shooting gas is much more productive than passing it.... More consistent than granular.

    It is a terrible year for so many U.S. farmers. Larson Farms, Millennial Farmer, Kate's Ag, Laura Farms... I like to eat, so I am cheering for you all. Snuggling up to a dog that rolled in something dead. LOL Might be bath time for you two...

      Don't know about the others but Larson Farms cannot buy a break this year. Just had more damage from high winds, even tipped the cultivator back onto it's heels. Good luck to all farms involved.

    Lol, Anhydrous.. Here in Southern MO the tweekers are well known to steal it for part of their Methamphetamine production..
    Local farmers put locks, cameras, etc.., on their Anhydrous tanks in hope of curtailing the theft rate..

    Growing up in the mid 1950s as a son of a farmer and living around farms in northern Indiana, there frequently were anhydrous ammonia leaks, and the sheriff would have to shut down entire square miles of roads until it dissipated. I remember being caught in some of those ammonia clouds and hardly being able to breathe. It can be dangerous. I can see the love on your dog's face that she has for you. She's so happy you are home.

      Reading through some comments and noticed you said northern indiana. I grew up in Newton county which is farm country in NW Indiana. Miss that place. I’m now down fairly close to where Erins family farms. I enjoy her videos because the cast reminds me of the good folks I grew up around.

    Fun thing to do with anhydrous is shrinking dollar bills, or anything else that will dehydrate for that matter. A refrigeration tech buddy used to keep a bunch of bills that were about the size of monopoly money to give out.

    Vaporized nitrogen is a better explanation of it instead of gas. I handle thousands on tons of this and is as safe as it is as you treat it. With respect. Pulled and filled hundreds and hundreds of those tanks you are pulling. Spring is long hours for everyone involved with farming. Thanks Erin.

    Also from Indiana. Not so fun story. At 13 me and the neighbor kid was riding with the farmer in a old Cab International spraying in the gas. The side and back windows was open. The hose blew off or broke and was blowing directly in the cab, the farmer yells don't breath get out when I stop. Man my lungs and eyes were burning. Couldn't hardly breathe. Needless to say we were no longer allowed to ride with the farmer. Had to go through the gas chamber when I joined the military. Didn't affect me one bit other than my eyes watered. The Instructors thought I was holding my breath. I said you obviously have never inhaled anhydrase ammonia. Then had to explain after my comment. That stuff is nasty!

    Good morning Erin , good to see a video from you. Was not sure what the weather has been like in your part of the country but it looks like you've been fighting some mud. We are in Western Pennsylvania have had our corn in the ground for a month now or oats for about 8 weeks. Crops overall are doing well we are two-thirds of the way through with our first cutting of hay . Had a fair amount of moisture through planting and up to the first couple weeks of haymaking, now we're having moist forecast but not much rain. We apply our nitrogen and granular form 46 0 0 and then cultivated in hoping to start that either tomorrow evening or Tuesday morning and get it in ahead of some supposed rain that is heading our way. Glad to see you guys are progressing in the fields stay safe LOL try not to break anything!

    You can tell I maintain a fertilizer facility that has anhydrous ammonia. Because I look at the both anhydrous tanks in the field and I notice her Nutrien facility has them incorrectly labeled as per DOT or PUCO laws unless it’s an Ohio only thing, but there has to be a 3” space around the 1005 non flammable gas placard, and it sure looks like the anhydrous Ammon stickers are a lot closer than 3 inches.
