    Thanks Thomas!
    TLDR summary for others:
#1 How Your Brain Feels: Carbs - Spatial Memory Reduced & Insulin Resistance (Oxidative Stress)
#2 Orexin: Hormone Promoting Wakefulness (Inhibited Neurons)
#3 Hunger: Carbs - More Hungry | Fats - More Satiated
    #4 Responding To Exercise: Carbs - Brute/Quick Strength | Fats - Longer Energy/Oxygenation
#5 Feeling Relaxed or Sleepy: Carbs - Energy Using Amino Acids | Fats - Less Susceptible To Energy Depravity
BONUS: Thirsty & Urinate Frequency: Insulin Resistance; Glucose Generates More Fluid Production

When you eat refined carbs junk food .you will eat more often because your body is still craving nutrition that it can't get from junk food .when you eat complex carbs healthy carbs like protein and vegetables your body is getting the nutrition it needs. You will stay full longer and feel better and will be healthy.

The “you’re burning carbs” signs are:
    1. How your brain feels… foggy. Over the long term. Insulin level is making cognitive function decrease… long-term
    2. You feel sleepy… bc of Orexin
    3. You’re hungry more frequently
    4. You have less brute, quick strength. (You burn through your reserves faster.)
AD - Lumen metabolic tracker measures CO2 in exhale, and calculates fat burn *** I think I want this! Maybe I’m a sucker but I think it might be worth a try***
    5. You feel sleepy… because of tryptophan

Thus is an area that I think people on keto bounce around with in their daily lives. . I find myself very weak some times and have to eat fats and proteins to get energy. I can relate to the cognitive brain activity when I know I'm running on ketones . It's definitely clearer thinking . I even take mct oil sometimes when I want this focus .

Thirst and urination can be caused by many things. I constantly see posts from people doing keto or carnivore diet discussing high levels of thirst and urination. There are multiple studies suggesting that high-fat diet can increase insulin resistance. Wouldn’t it make more sense to include carbohydrates to assist with hydration?

Thomas, been on the Lumen for about three weeks now and getting a flex score of 11.5.. I like it, however when I am in fat burn (#1) I noticed that it does not coincide with my ketone levels. Its rare for me to get anything over .03 mmoL ketone levels, yet I am in fat burn according to this device... perhaps you can shed some light on that?

If your body is fat adapted and therefore burning ketones, you are going to get a lower concentration than when your body is producing but can't consume them.

Just got back my 6 month blood labs and was disappointing in some things one my uric acid was high, 8.1 and my urea nitrogen bun was high 20 snd my bun creatine was high 21.9 both indicate impaired kidney function probably all high because my high protein diet. Still have low vit D and folate eating greens and walking without a shirt in the sun 3-4 days a week. The good news im no longer pre diabetic was hoping for an A1C that more closely matched my meter average around 90 but it was 5.4. My c peptide was good at 2.1 snd my HDL/Trig ratio 131/59 was 2.2, c reactive protein 0.5. So no eating mostly or only meat is not a miracle diet and i would recommend if you are reading this get your labs done and watch your kidney function and uric acid.

So far I am not impressed with the Lumen. I've been doing the breath tests every morning along side checking my blood sugar with the Mojo Glucose Meter and they are not in sync. Lumen readings are consistently giving me a 4-burning carbs but meanwhile my blood glucose readings are in the 70's. I've been following a keto diet for over 10 years so I know what raises blood sugar. How is this possible? I need to chat with the customer service.

I did this with extreme Keto "Sub 15 gram carb per day, one meal a day, intermittent fasting 22 hours per day. Constantly monitor blood glucose "6-8 tests a day"and adjust your meds to lower levels as your readings allow. In 3 weeks I was off all meds except for a single metformin every morning for a yes then quit that. Currently my Fasting blood glucose readings are sub 80 . I also lost 100 lbs in the process. I have been Glucose NORMAL for over 2 years now.at 63 years young The big thing to watch out for is LOW blood glucose due to too much medication. This is a very tricky and complex change in your system and I recommend being supervised by a doctor. Dr.Steve Phinney is a major pioneer of keto and started Virta Health in Georgia to do exactly what you want to do with 24/7 remote monitoring through a App on your phone with a doctor.

Exercise more, any way you can - resistance training, aerobic, even walking - it will all help. Break the carb cycle by going relatively long periods without carbs or even food at all. Fasting for a full day or even multiple isn't as hard as it initially seems - hunger will come in waves that will subside - you will not keep getting more and more hungry unless you're actually starving - which is a point most of us will never be remotely close to. Avoid extra large meals, especially combined with alcohol or caffeine. Go for a walk after eating. Eat fewer carbs in general. Metformin is not necessarily a bad drug either - many people now take it who have no problem with blood sugar just for the longevity and all cause mortality benefits. A continuous glucose monitor would be the best way to identify exactly which foods, food pairings, and lifestyle activities end up spiking your blood sugar - the effects are often very different from person to person. Unfortunately these are still fairly expensive, but I hope that someday soon they will be as accessible as a smart watch/activity tracker is now.

Heya. I know I can research this, but research (I’ve found) is not as helpful as experience when it comes to keto, not including the science behind it all. 3rd week in to 20g keto (with a partner). Dropped 9 lbs in first two weeks but have stayed at exact same weight last week. 199.8 to 190.2. Started IF twice a week this week (20-4) using broth as intro and including it as dinner. We may not be tracking as much as we should but I definitely never hit above 20g and she doesn’t go above 30 (I was already GF for 11 years and this really felt like a natural transition for me, but not her). I am including cardio in the afternoon 3 days a week and lifting 2 days a week. Is it natural to hit a plateau at the beginning? I did a double IF mon/tues with limited results. Again no hunger or discomfort. Just not sure if I’m sabotaging or something. My sister introduced us to electrolyte powder so I drink that once a day when eating normally and twice when fasting. This community seems helpful. Advice welcome.
Edit: don’t hesitate to say I’m impatient. I know. Been a trail runner all my life. 39 now and gained 25 lbs in past 5 years working mostly stationary jobs. Felt like water weight came off super easy. Not complaining, just curious if I should step it up or keep steady.

40 year veteran here. Keto is not a weight loss program, weight loss is a byproduct of consuming a proper human diet. You are doing great, just calm down. You will experience "stalls" because that is how the body adjusts to the changes. Don't weigh yourself every day, focus on eliminating "keto products", eating enough fat and hearing what your body may be telling you regarding electrolyte levels given your exercise regimen. One follow-up, is there some reason why you categorize those nitro levels as "high", they are within the norm according to the printout?

This video kinda makes me sad, the golden age of UA-cam is over. We had a relatively brief window of amazing, independent content made by those most passionate and usually well informed - an amazing departure from traditional media that basically required corporate backing and approval. I don't really blame Thomas, but this video, like many others from quality UA-camrs, is an elaborate commercial - one that would never have been created without the sponsorship. That's not to say it's a bad video, and definitely not to say it's not full of interesting and factual information that could definitely help people - and yet... the golden age of UA-cam is over.

I get that too with loads of Brilliant ads and so on in my favourite YT videos, but the thing is, everybody has to eat and noone makes videos of quality without hard work put into them.
And that means that either you burn out / lose your family or you quit your day job and do YT for money and that requires money.
So ads and sponsors are neccesary.

    • @dd3mon
      @dd3mon 2 роки тому

@T M I'll definitely admit the algorithm is also to blame. My issue isn't the sponsored parts, but this whole video was conceived and crafted to fit in to the sponsorship. No shade on Thomas, he's does a great job of researching and presenting valuable information. However his real job now is a balance of maintaining his own image, generating views, and tying those views in to sponsorship deals - a difficult job that he excels at for sure - and one that often, but not always, overlaps with concise, top quality content.

@@barath4545 Not arguing for one minute that Thomas is making the wrong choices. Just lamenting the passing of a simpler time. It's not all bad, the new incentives created by the possible income streams from online content creation will and has already lead to some amazing new content that would never have existed otherwise. However there is also an alarming rise in not so amazing content that checks all the boxes to get views and sponsorships, but ultimately lacks substance and purpose.

I’m a follower and normally I get it- there r ads and u need sponsors. But this was a bit much for me- seemed a bit too much this time- took a lot of time away from the video. Amd on top of that were other ads- geesh, i was constantly having to forward through all of the ads so a bit disappointing in that regard

Most likely fat. Keto is supposed to be leucine sparing so it doesn’t destroy muscle

Thomas, can you do a video about the optimal time to switch from a keto, low carb approach, back to a carb burning cycle?
For instance, been doing keto for 4 months and I'm planning on switching after 6 months.

12:30 It's been determined that the sleepy feeling after Thanksgiving Day dinner is due to having eaten a lot of food. Tryptophan has nothing to do with it. THIS is why you don't get medical advice off of UA-cam.

Yeah, i agree because looking at the mechanistic data you'll only expect to see the difference at night, but in the short term there should be no difference because tryptophan dosen't instantly turn into serotonin and then into melatonin to make you sleppy.

This video sponsored by yet another ridiculously expensive gadget that is subscription based. Must be rough not having to pay for all of those devices. If we all bought this Lumen, a CGM, and a few of the other subscription services like Thrive and Butcher Box, I can't imagine what that monthly bill would be. Yikes.

"4:00" - "it's not to say one is better than the other" (fat burning vs carb burning). Tom, in your efforts to be impartial, you're misleading. If feeling wakeful and having better cognitive functioning are not "better" than i don't know what is.
EDIT: you even undermined the carb feel good factor by highlighting that emotional stability goes out of the window on carbs
EDIT II: i'm running on carbs right now; no wakefulness, with irritability, and wanting angel cake

Well it's better if you're triyng to go for a nap after you eat. This biphasic sleep where u sleep at 1-4PM and then at 12PM-1AM could be a use for carbs. NOTE: for me dosen't really work, even if i just sleep 4 hours i'm better of going to sleep earlier like at 10PM instead of 12. And later in the video he does mention that for short high intensity exercise glucose is better so you ethier didin't watch the whole video or you took him out of context on purpose.

@@loganwolv3393 "he does mention that for short high intensity exercise glucose is better"
      - ye for 0.01% of the time and then only if you do HIIT. Even after that, you need to get back to into ketosis to deal with soft tissue repair and inflammation. One of my best workouts ever was at the 48h mark of a water fast, so the only people that would NEED that extra pep from carbs are professional athletes in exclusively explosive events that last under a minute or 2. It's incredibly niche advice.
EDIT: my point is, Tom doesn't need to try to sound impartial, since his delivery of the facts is impartiality manifest. It feels like he's placating, and he doesn't need to. Rant over
