Trying out the Lord Aylesford 1696 stradivarius on loan to me by the Nippon Music Foundation and the Joseph Filius Guarnerius 1694 from Beares in London.
The sound of the strad is more colorful in the mid and high tones. But can we speak about the deepness of the lower tones of the Guarnerius ? I loved it
I heard a real guarneri once in my old life. Sorta ruined everything for me. The only thing that sounded like that was a viola a mentor had which was a modern viola and it was amazing and it had an amazing player so that combos always good. But aaaaaaah! Guarneri
@@Kimpie4HC Me too. I actually preferred the Guarneri. I would tho. I have a Guarneri copy made by a French luthier, Tournier. It is a smaller cello with a slender waist. Makes a beautiful sound and easy to play.
Eh.... I think the Strad is just the superior instrument here. The Guarneri is just as bright or brighter than the strad... its just that the bright overtones aren't as harmonic and beautiful.
That reminds me of an old joke. I am the proud owner of a Stradivarius and a Picasso. The trouble is that Stradivarius couldn't paint and Picasso made terrible violins!
I think Stradivarius would be better suited to soloist work with orchestras due to the sheer resonance/volume of the sound, which doesn’t come across great on microphone. Whereas the Guarneri might be better in a quartet or smaller scale solo recital, just like people, different voices.
I was just thinking the same thing. The Strad is almost too bright. I guess I prefer the warm, rich tones and almost melancholy feel. The Strad is too joyful. A happy little violin can be spritely, but I prefer a dark cello.
I actually prefer the Guarneri. I prefer the size of it compared to the Strad and thought it had a nicer sound (even if one had to sacrifice brightness in the higher register). Though as others pointed out, the set ups are different (bridge, tailpiece, etc.). Both are gorgeous either way.
Que maravilla que tengas posibilidad de tocar esos incomparables instrumentos! Pero en todo esto hay una realidad que no se puede negar. Toques el cello que toques lo haces extremadamente de maravilla!!! ❤
They are both beautiful instruments, I loved the smoothness from the Strad, but you can definitely hear the difference when you wear headphones for the video. Beautiful.
To me, the depth and parameter of sound made by the strad was broader than the Guarneri. The Guarneri is beautiful, but I didn't hear as varying of a range from it as from the strad. Also the bow "popping" sound in the string at the beginning of the dvorak was insane on the stead!
The Strad is fitted with Belgium bridge/synthetic tailpiece, the Guarneri with French bridge/boxwood tailpiece. They are set up for different playing conditions so it's rather apple vs. orange here. Nevertheless, interesting comparison!
That is very astute of you to notice from the video. Thank you! I used to play my Joseph Filius cello with a French bridge and later switched to a Belgium bridge. It must have increased the sheer volume of sound coming out of the cello by 20% -- with no loss to the quality of sound and colors -- just different colors! As you said, set up in everything! NP
@@harkmay It is a wooden bridge. The tailpiece is synthetic. The Belgian bridge fitted on the cello has less mass at the top and longer "legs." It will make the instrument brighter and louder than a French bridge. The Lord Aylesford is what Starker made many of his recordings with, including the famous recording of the Bach Suites. That was before the upper bout was cut down, and Starker played with the bridge high between the F holes to keep the scale length close to standard. Incidentally, I did have a conversation with Starker about the Aylesford around 2007. He said that the Aylesford had the best C string of any cello he ever played. You can see why!
Thanks a lot for sharing this comparison. It's fantastic sound. Would be interesting to hear this strad compared to a one from 1715 (or similar). Next time?
Very different! The Strad sounds utterly beautiful. I’m tempted to think I’m just saying that because it’s a Strad, but I tried a blind test and yep - it’s my clear favourite.
I'd be really interested to hear the cellos both with similar bridges! Looks like the Guarneri is fitted with a French bridge, whereas the Strad has a Belgian. Beautiful cellos though...
I'd like to hear the Guarneri in Classical music, where such huge resonance that the Stradivari has is fittingly avoided. Haydn, Boccherini, Abel, and even the Schumann, all fit better in the rounder sound of the Guarneri. The Strad is wondrous in telling the Dvořák saga. I think it'd do the Shostakovich and Prokofiev concerti very well; the Kodaly and Hindemith sonatas as well. The bigger, throatier sound is more luscious for such later music. What about the Bach suites? I'd love to hear this cellist do ALL the suites on BOTH cellos, because I cannot imagine which would sound more amazing, and also because I'm greedy like that 😁
Me encantan! Tremendos instrumentos! El Strad tiene un sonido mas brillante, mientras que el Guarnerius un sonido mas profundo, como mas de su interior.. Excelente Pablo!
So Interesting to hear both of these Cellos side-by-side. I give The edge to the Strad on the opening of the Dvorak, certainly more power. I felt the Guanari had the edge in the lower register. Aren’t you a bit nervous having some 15 million dollars/ Euros in your apartment?
¡No puedo creer que tengas dos chelos tan increíbles en una misma habitación! Yo estaría hiperventilando. En unos días tocarás en el Palau de la música, ¡espero poder ir!
Hard to tell from the recording as so many variables are at play, but I was a little surprised that the strad seemed to have a quite significantly more powerful sound/projection, at least in the middle and higher frequency range. In the lower registry the Guarneri seems to have a more punch and a slightly less "muddy" tone. Both sound fantastic, but not until handled by a fantastic cellist, like mr. Ferrández.
Yes one is brighter and the other is bolder. I have an early 20th century Stradivarious "model" from Germany and it is bright and resonates. More than other cellos I have tried.
The sonority and projection of the Strad is incomparable, particularly in the upper register. capable of cutting through any orchestra and making itself known; on the other hand the personality of the Guarnarius is far more intimate and personal compared to the Strad which comes off as more cold and aloof. Personally I relate more to the Guarnarius, which is no surprise since I also relate most strongly to Queyras' Cappa cello which also has an exceptionally beautiful personality.
If I could choose I would take the Guarnerius one because of its timbre. The Strad sounds louder and extremely beautiful too but the other is potentially better. Thats my humble personal opinion. The best of this video is the cellist playing. Congrats!
Microphone wasn't at the same angle when they played the lower register so I don't know how much deeper that Guarnerius is. The difference on the A string is pretty big though. Guarneri has that darker more transparent sound. It's probably worse as a concert instrument but wow it has a eerie quality to it.
Strad richer, more vibrant, more bite; has an extra dimension to the tone. The lower register growl in that first piece of the Dvorak (3:13) was blowing the microphone! Guarneri a somewhat polite sound by comparison, possibly more refined, certainly more restrained. I can see them being suited to very different works.
As a seventy-year old cellist whose idol, when I was young, was Janos Starker (who performed on the Lord Aylesford), I had been wondering where that cello was nowadays. This video answers my question.
Aldir Gracindo fuck it, just search George Navarro and you will see you have a twin hahahahaha he is my friend and your face in the photo is just like him xD
The strad is great with the higher pitches and is good with intense music. The guaneri is good with the deep pitches and is good with emotional music. I also think the strad is a soloist cello and the guaneri blends in with an orchestra. If I had to choose, I would choose strad. Guaneri is a cool name tho. 😁
Laying those on the couch like that is sinful. Lmao 😂 I only pray the ambient temperature and humidity is perfect. Lol 😂 Jokes aside Well played and thanks for the inspiration sir. Love the darker toned one. Kudos. Consider doing a track with both at the same time with two different parts. The bright tone on the other cuts right through! Thanks for the video!
The Guarneri to my ears is darker, and more rich sounding, the Stad brighter and more focused. what strings did you use? You can't tell the power by a video, so Ill leave that open to interpretation.
After listening to the comparison over and over with headphones... I'm surprised I like the Guarneri more than the Strad. To me, the sound from the Guarneri in this small enclosed space is much crisper. The Strad is just a bit too loud and therefore messy sounding in this space. I think it would sound AMAZING in a concert hall though.
Great cellists through history: Boccherini, Casals, Popper, du Pre, Maisky, Starker, Rostropovich, Ma, Ferrandez. Question for the newest master: thoughts on composing your own sonata or etudes?
Yoyo Ma should not be on this list. Highly subjective, I know, but his publicity is overmuch. And he is a most decent person; kind, apparently generous, and down to earth. But I have never felt his Bach as I do the others; perhaps he has not felt emotional pain as have the others. Maybe he is too happy, or he incorporates that into his persona as if that is essential. Sorry!
@@JXS63J I love Yo Yo too, but I have often felt that he plays most everything with the same saccharine tone. Starker recorded the Bach Suites on the Lord Aylesford. To me that is the benchmark recording.

It must be weird, but I really prefer the Guarnieri, even in the higher notes.
You're not weird. I like the Guarnieri quite a lot more. I think we naturally go for the cello we think would personally suit us best.
