      Awesome, thank you, exactly what I was trying to achieve. If you do get around to doing the swap, if you have any questions feel free to ask. Seams most videos out there don't hit all the points. Allot fo guys stick with the auto ECM, then you don't have to worry about the cruise or sensor but then they always hesitate when trying to make a shift and throw codes etc. In my opinion this is the best way to do it, no codes, no lights etc, and its really not that much work.

    Did your ZF6 have the trans cooler lines on it? I am trying to figure out if that was something important or just something they added in the 2003 model. My zf6 has transmission cooler lines coming out by the starter and i just need to know if i can just plug them off or if i need it.

    Question on the cruise control. So you merged those two wires into one? And where did you run it into that grey connector?

    • @mikewrenchin1735

      Just connect a wire to the tan and light blue in the column and run it down to the clutch switch wiring, connect it to the tan and light blue wire on the clutch switch connector, even a skotch lock would work to make this connection.

    Did you use a ZF5 shifter or did you cut the 6 down? I like that but it's definitely a shorter shifter than all the ZF6 shifters I've seen.

    • @mikewrenchin1735
      @mikewrenchin1735  Рік тому

      Its the stock shifter from my parts truck. I didnt cut it down, I just pealed off the old knob, turned the end of the drifter down a bit on the lathe and I put on a custom knob hand made from rose wood with a Krona in the top. I like it waaaaay more then stock.

    • @richmcgarvey4118
      @richmcgarvey4118 Рік тому

      @@mikewrenchin1735 It looks much shorter. I am getting ready to do the swap on my 99. I love my 97 ZF5 but i have drove a number of trucks with the ZF6 and really hate the shifter. It's to long. Makes the shift pattern to wide and when in reverse I hit my hand on the knob trying to back a trailer up. The ZF5 shifter is much shorter and plan to use one from a ZF5.

    • @mikewrenchin1735

    I just found this info out, and maybe this is why I have no check engine after my swap without the second ect sensor.
    The 2000 model year never came with a second Engine Coolant Temperature sensor, regardless of whether or not it was fitted with a manual or automatic transmission.
    The additional ECT sensor was not introduced until 2001, coinciding with the horsepower rating bump to 275 HP that was exclusive to the manual transmission trucks

    • @mikewrenchin1735
      @mikewrenchin1735  2 роки тому

      What ecm are you running? It's hard to find much, if any info on it. I know that all the manual trucks I've pulled parts from had the coolant temp sensor. I also know that the apx1 pcms I've used want to see the coolant temp signal or they will not work properly.

  • @tylerregen

    I did this swap on my truck and never did the coolant sensor thing as I couldn't find good info. However I don't have a check engine light, and it does run great, but I'm getting 10mpg with a truck camper and dirtbike on the front. Is it possible I don't need to do the coolant sensor? I've driven 10k miles no issue, but my gas mileage is poor id say, but not horrible?

    • @tylerregen
      @tylerregen 2 роки тому

      I have never scanned the truck since, and my check engine light is on before I start the truck, but not on running as it should be. Should I still do it?

    • @mikewrenchin1735
      @mikewrenchin1735  Рік тому

      @@tylerregen I would definitely have the truck scanned. You will get horrible milage and poor performance with code p0118 active. I dont know why the CEL wouldn't be illuminated if p0118 is active but i know that different PCM codes act differently too. What PCM are you running currently? If your still running the auto ECM I would swap it for a manual one and if you have a manual PCM and code p0118 is active then ad the ECT sensor.

    • @mikewrenchin1735
      @mikewrenchin1735  Рік тому

      You can have the pcm reflashed yes, there's some companies in the US that you can send your pcm too to have them reflash it to a manual PCM. I just did some searching around at local wreckers and found a L99-01 ecm for 200 bucks. Was the easiest solution for me. You'll just have to make sure to flash your auto ecm back to stock with your tuner before you pull it so that you can use your tuner on your new ecm. If its a chip you'll just have to reflash the chip for the new ecm code.

    Could give a rough estimate of how much it costs for this project?

    • @mikewrenchin1735
      @mikewrenchin1735  Рік тому

      Well, it really depends if you buy a kit, bits and pieces or a whole parts truck. I bought a whole running parts truck for 3200 and sold the motor for 950 and the auto transmission for 950. No subtracting any of the other parts I sold off the parts truck the Trans and everything cost me roughly 1300. A full kit on marketplace seams to go for around 1500 in my parts. Other then that all you need is the clutch and the oils and shop supplies. As for the clutch my truck makes a decent bit of power so I went with a ceramic puck clutch off of rock auto for just under 400 I believe, with the resurfacing the flywheel and rear main and oils I'd say it was an additional 600 or 700. If you wanted too though of corse you could spend a couple grand on a southbend clutch but to me that is foolish.

  • @calebmoudy4211

    Could you use the electric transfer case from the auto?

    • @mikewrenchin1735
      @mikewrenchin1735  2 роки тому

      Defenitely yes, but you would have to pull it apart and put in the input shaft that has the right spline count for the zf6, you would also have to ad the manual reverse switch pigtail to the auto trans harness. If your manual parts truck had the electric shift t-case (not sure if that was an option) then it would be straight bolt on.

    • @calebmoudy4211
      @calebmoudy4211 2 роки тому

      @@mikewrenchin1735 another question, would it be possible to put a zf5 s47 in a super duty? They seem to be a more direct swap from and auto. Output shafts are the same spline count and no oil cooler to deal with on the zf5. Also zf5s seem to be alot cheaper in my area.

    • @mikewrenchin1735
      @mikewrenchin1735  2 роки тому +1

      @@calebmoudy4211 yes it can be done, I thought about it myself. I've never done it myself but apefently its a fairly straight forward swap though I dont know if the shifter hole will line up in the superduty hump. Apparently the only thing that's tricky with putting a zf5 into a superduty is that you have to use the master and reservoir from the superduty and the slave from the Obs and they aren't really designed to be easily dis/re-assembled and bled. The zf6 trans cooler was a peice of cake to hook up, and it gives you the opportunity to put an inline filter in.

    • @calebmoudy4211
      @calebmoudy4211 2 роки тому

      @@mikewrenchin1735 for the hydraulic clutch I was thinking of using a slave and master from gas Superduty that came with a zf5. I believe 99-03 you could still get zf5 in a gas truck.

    • @mikewrenchin1735
      @mikewrenchin1735  Рік тому

      Yea the 4r100s are good compared to like say a 47re in a dodge, but still it is really hard to get a transmission that still relies on hydraulics for 1 2 and 3 to work well with any kind of power or big load. If you were to try and go to an Allison you'd be dealing with tons of wiring, aftermarket trans controllers, tuning etc. Go to a manual and you don't have to deal with any of that crap. I know a guy that put 800k km on his 02 zf-6 7.3 with the factory engine, trans, t-case, diffs, everything. Something I would really love to do at some point is 10 speed Eaton swap a pickup, maybe a compound turbo cummins. Next project on the line though is a turbo diesel boat, so maybe after that.
