That's video is the greatest instruction and explanation video ever on UA-cam thank you so much subscribing, saving video and hitting like for sure
Worked perfectly, thanks
Sorry to bother you I have a couple questions so I followed your video and another Mike Daughtry and wind up my crank camshafts do the marks you guys were saying are hand rotated the motor to make sure it would spin put it back together and I started it and it has a rough idle like the timing is off is there a different trick would you have an idea what I might have messed up on
As long as you lined up all your marks the timing shouldn't be out. Did you maybe forget to plug something back in? Like an injector or coil or so?
Sweet truck. I d love to do this swap to mine
😊
What an amazing and educational video. I love my Canadian brethren. You guys are A-1. Thanks for the video from America. You make my life easy, even for a 2wd owner.
Thanks!
Did your ZF6 have the trans cooler lines on it? I am trying to figure out if that was something important or just something they added in the 2003 model. My zf6 has transmission cooler lines coming out by the starter and i just need to know if i can just plug them off or if i need it.
All the ford zf6s in diesels I know of came with the Trans cooler lines, I just ran them to the original air to oil trans cooler from the auto with 3/8th soft line. My buddy did his 6.0 and just capped the lines but in my opinion, if the opportunity is there to keep the oil cooler so that it deteriots less, might as well use it! I also added a magnetic inline trans fluid filter, just because.
Excellent video. Very informative. How long, from start to finish, did it take to do this swap? Thanks in advance..
Hey, sorry for the delayed reply. I put 2 or 3 weekends into it just taking my time, but on the clock I'd say I could probably knock it out in a couple of shop days. In my opinion it's better to give yourself time, that way glue and paint has time to dry and you don't forget any steps.
Now that it’s a year later and the 12 month warranty is up on the enginetech kit how is it holding up? I’ve been putting off doing mine for the fear of not being able to get quality parts but I don’t wanna hold off anymore lol
Hey, sorry for the delayed reply. I've put 20k on it, run very hard, 7k rpm limiter wheelspin getting out of mud and snow in the bush and daily driving, and the chains are perfectly silent and smooth still. So far, I'm very impressed by the kit.
What brand of chains and tensioners did you use? I've heard lots of horror stories about the chinese made units.
Enginetech kit off of rock auto. 20k km of hard abuse and still running perfectly.
We're u floating gears there ❓️❓️😲😲
No, I do in big trucks with eaton transmissions, but with synchronized transmissions it's just hard on the synchronized to float gears.
So the 99 manual trans ecu will not work in a 2002 automatic truck
No, not without flashing.
Awesome awesome video dude! Thanks a bunch
How long did this swap take you from start to back on the road?
I was at the time driving my ranger so I took my time, 2 or 3 weeks in total working on weekends but if I really put my foot into it I'd say I could probably hammer the job out in 2 or 3 days.
Looking to do this on my 99 v10
Nice job on the video! Is it roughly the same process in the h20a 2.0 v6?
I'm not sure, but I'd imagine it to be similar yes.
Hi Mike how can we contact you.. do you have an patreon or email address? Thanks 👍
Regarding?
Excellent Mechanic.
Thanks for your time in making this
That seems like a step by step video lol. Don’t sell yourself short my guy
Incredibly well spoken, informative, and concise. Great video!
Thanks!
Yo bro how much would you do mine for?

The guide sleeve on mine is worn bad, I'm assuming from a bad throw out bearing. Any idea where to buy a replacement?
I'm not sure where to get a new one no, you may have to just scour the internet for one, or see if any of trans shops of wreckers have a transmission laying around that you could steal one from.
I see you went from electronic 4wd to manual on the floor. Did you have to do anything different with the wiring for that?
It just depends on the harness, the harness I got from the wreckers was a 99-01 manual trans and manual t-case harness so it was straight plug and play.
Got this same problem now about 3 or 4,000 miles later after the clutch, flywheel and rear main seal were done at a big Ford shop...leaking trans lubricant out of the vent hole on the bottom and didn't even realize that seal could and should have been replaced. Crappy part is the transmission has to come back out and they didn't sound real interested in doing that and kept telling me the same thing that the transmission had to be taken apart. The ridiculous thing is that they also replaced the rear/output seal on the back (2wd trans) because IT was seeping, so on higher mileage units that come out it might be a good idea to just replace both the rear main on the motor and the input on the trans proactively as long as the input shaft itself is okay to reuse.
Even if the snout on the input shaft is worn the Fitzall kit with the wear sleeve and oversize bearing works like a treat. I'm running that kit in my truck just a preventative measure to protect my input shaft.
what tool did you use to remove the screws on the tensioner
On which tensioner? Theres 3 of them.
Awesome video! I'm about to do the same job + replace those stupid o-rings that are sandwiched between the block/spacer and spacer/oil pan. How's the timing set holding up? Was eyeing that enginetech kit too. Later!
So far so good! Enginetech is a US based company and apperently supplies many large shops with engine parts, the parts looked like very nice quality going in. Yea as I figured out after getting er on the road, my deck plate is also leaking from that stupid o-ring. That's a project for another day, or year. 😆 This unit is only my winter/bush buggy, and I love it for what it is.
Thank you so much for making this video! God bless!
Awesome job man! Would it be the same with the wiring if I’m doing the swap in a 2003 f250 5.4 2v motor?
Also if I do the swap are the transmission cooler lines the same in the 4r100 and zf6 or did you have to modify them? Thqnks
I'm not sure on that one but I feal like it would be a very similar process.
Great video!!!!!
Thanks!
On that gray box what wire did you run the wire to for the over drive switch
Tan/blue wire on the clutch safety switch plug (grey box) to the tan/blue wire on the auto shifter pigtail.
Nice
Dude you have to be from canada...lol you and i talk the same
Haha sure am. BC Canada.
You did one hell of a job
Thanks! She's still running strong!
thank you for this video. Your methods of removing the old seal with a screw and using a pipe to drive on the new seal are brilliant. .My 2002 F350 manual transmission with manual 4WD has 375000 miles on it now. I am replacing the clutch in a few days. I am now ordering the seal from Amazon. Have you ever had to use an Input Shaft Repair kit KPBZ73HD on any ZF6?
Yes I've used the fitzall kit with the wear sleeve. If you check out my zf6 swap video you'll see it there. Works like a charm. Has been in my truck going on 3 years and running strong.
You wouldn't happen to still have that 2002 manual pcm would you? I'm getting ready to do the swap on my 03 and the only thing I'm missing to do it is the pcm
No, sorry, I've already sold it. You're the 3rd or 4th person already to ask me that. I guess that's a sought-after part. Scour any wreckers near you, I found my apx-1 at a local wrecking yard for 200 bucks canadian.
hey mike! do you still have the 2002 7.3L manual ecm? id like to purchase if you still do! could you reply with a way to reach you? thanks in the middle of this swap on my 02 f350!
I do actually yea. Sorry about the late reply, I dont check my youtube notifications too often. Find me on Facebook, Michael Burgin. Profile picture is me with my two dogs.
Would this swap be the same for a excursion ? Your videos are very educational
Thanks. Yes it should be the exact same if it's a 99-01, slight variances if it's an 02-03.
Curious if you've accomplished your zf6 swap on an excursion.. it's been an idea of mine since I first learned what an excursion was as a young boy, and then heartbroken to find out they didn't come with a manual transmission.. I will do it one day, as soon as I can find a clean excursion that isn't $20k
Could give a rough estimate of how much it costs for this project?
Well, it really depends if you buy a kit, bits and pieces or a whole parts truck. I bought a whole running parts truck for 3200 and sold the motor for 950 and the auto transmission for 950. No subtracting any of the other parts I sold off the parts truck the Trans and everything cost me roughly 1300. A full kit on marketplace seams to go for around 1500 in my parts. Other then that all you need is the clutch and the oils and shop supplies. As for the clutch my truck makes a decent bit of power so I went with a ceramic puck clutch off of rock auto for just under 400 I believe, with the resurfacing the flywheel and rear main and oils I'd say it was an additional 600 or 700. If you wanted too though of corse you could spend a couple grand on a southbend clutch but to me that is foolish.
You wouldn’t still have that 02 zf6 pcm that you would want to get rid of do you
I do actually. Want to buy it off of me?
What would be the safest way to give you my info for contacting
I would like to talk about the computer you have but idk how to get with you to do it
Hey, sorry Enjie. I don't check my UA-cam notifications all too often. Find me on Facebook. My name is Michael Burgin. My profile picture is me with my two dogs.
Trying to figure out the Computer on mine is swapping it necessary? Or could you have it reflashed I have a tuner in it that’s about all
You can have the pcm reflashed yes, there's some companies in the US that you can send your pcm too to have them reflash it to a manual PCM. I just did some searching around at local wreckers and found a L99-01 ecm for 200 bucks. Was the easiest solution for me. You'll just have to make sure to flash your auto ecm back to stock with your tuner before you pull it so that you can use your tuner on your new ecm. If its a chip you'll just have to reflash the chip for the new ecm code.
Did you use a ZF5 shifter or did you cut the 6 down? I like that but it's definitely a shorter shifter than all the ZF6 shifters I've seen.
Its the stock shifter from my parts truck. I didnt cut it down, I just pealed off the old knob, turned the end of the drifter down a bit on the lathe and I put on a custom knob hand made from rose wood with a Krona in the top. I like it waaaaay more then stock.
@@mikewrenchin1735 It looks much shorter. I am getting ready to do the swap on my 99. I love my 97 ZF5 but i have drove a number of trucks with the ZF6 and really hate the shifter. It's to long. Makes the shift pattern to wide and when in reverse I hit my hand on the knob trying to back a trailer up. The ZF5 shifter is much shorter and plan to use one from a ZF5.
Fair enough. It would be easy enough to cut it down or make a custom shifter anyways.
Did this fix the issue ?
Yes. Have been daily driving the truck ever since and not so much as a weep.
you could make a booming side business out of doing this...
I would love to start my own business. I started out straight out of high school wrenching on farms and stuff just by word of mouth. Now I'm at a commercial truck shop to get a red seal ticket. Sometimes it feels like I've been wrenching longer then I've been alive lol. I want to move away from swapping rusty parts on semis and go back to doing cool weird stuff, make it less like a day job and more like a hobby again.
want to do this to my '02. on my 2nd 4R100 and they are crap. I would like a 6 speed Allison, but shops want 20k US...
Yea the 4r100s are good compared to like say a 47re in a dodge, but still it is really hard to get a transmission that still relies on hydraulics for 1 2 and 3 to work well with any kind of power or big load. If you were to try and go to an Allison you'd be dealing with tons of wiring, aftermarket trans controllers, tuning etc. Go to a manual and you don't have to deal with any of that crap. I know a guy that put 800k km on his 02 zf-6 7.3 with the factory engine, trans, t-case, diffs, everything. Something I would really love to do at some point is 10 speed Eaton swap a pickup, maybe a compound turbo cummins. Next project on the line though is a turbo diesel boat, so maybe after that.
@@mikewrenchin1735 I would love to. I can't find anyone in the Denver area that will do the conversion for me, and I'm too dumb to do it myself.
@@richfarfugnuven6308 With my video I'm sure you could manage lol. Honestly you'd likely be best off looking on facebook groups like this one i moderate. facebook.com/groups/1555885377832402/ Find someone private that has the skill set to do it for cash and you will save big bucks. I know if someone brings me a 7.3 to manual swap here in BC Canada I'll jump on it just for the fun of doing it!
I just found this info out, and maybe this is why I have no check engine after my swap without the second ect sensor. The 2000 model year never came with a second Engine Coolant Temperature sensor, regardless of whether or not it was fitted with a manual or automatic transmission. The additional ECT sensor was not introduced until 2001, coinciding with the horsepower rating bump to 275 HP that was exclusive to the manual transmission trucks
What ecm are you running? It's hard to find much, if any info on it. I know that all the manual trucks I've pulled parts from had the coolant temp sensor. I also know that the apx1 pcms I've used want to see the coolant temp signal or they will not work properly.
I never found the 2nd coolant temp sensor on my 99 donor truck. I found one at the base of the hpop but it was the black. I'm about to start my swap now
I did this swap on my truck and never did the coolant sensor thing as I couldn't find good info. However I don't have a check engine light, and it does run great, but I'm getting 10mpg with a truck camper and dirtbike on the front. Is it possible I don't need to do the coolant sensor? I've driven 10k miles no issue, but my gas mileage is poor id say, but not horrible?
I have never scanned the truck since, and my check engine light is on before I start the truck, but not on running as it should be. Should I still do it?
@@tylerregen I would definitely have the truck scanned. You will get horrible milage and poor performance with code p0118 active. I dont know why the CEL wouldn't be illuminated if p0118 is active but i know that different PCM codes act differently too. What PCM are you running currently? If your still running the auto ECM I would swap it for a manual one and if you have a manual PCM and code p0118 is active then ad the ECT sensor.
Most informed video I’ve seen yet I’m in the process of swapping mine and couldn’t figure out why it wouldn’t start and this showed me why
Thanks! Knowing I helped a few people made it worth making the video and posting it. I should start making more of these videos. I want to eventually start my own shop and then I can film everything. Currently I fix commercial trucks at a large shop in town.
