      Outlander here. A month ago I had not yet heard the name Doug Sahm, tho i had heard the song Mandocino - German version many times in 1969/70 thereabouts. I knew of Charlie Pride easily forty years before discovering Doug Sahm. Doug Sahm is having a bigger inpact. I feel like I knew the dude in a past life.

    Was serving in the army stationed down in Texas in the early 70s. Every payday us young soldiers would go to Mexico to maximize our spending power. I developed a strong love to Tejano music. Makes me 18 again evetytime I hear this song! Thank you!

      Slide guitar goes with fiddle, my sister got stuck on classical music , played for low pay symphonies and chamber groups after she took violin lessons and got a music degree and taught new students. Then her horse fell on her and wrecked her wrist. Then she said she took up violin because she thought " it was expected of her" .

    Doug Sahm musical range was off the charts. I just got through listening to him playing grunge rock music with his boys, than I heard him playing 60's R&B Ray Charles inspired vocals, and now I am hearing him play straight country music. I bet he could rap if he wanted to.

    Back when I was in college, at UTSA, in San Antonio, I was an ROTC cadet. I had just left the Marine Corps after many years and was getting my education via the Army to be an officer. The Texas Tornadoes stopped in at Hills and Dales, owned by Coleman Davenport at the time, when that happened to be the uncle of my good friend Trip Davenport from Uvalde, where I was from. Coleman was a hell of a human. He hired ROTC cadets to work his place. He carried over 200 different beers. It was awesome. The crew off loaded the bus, then they set up, played for 5 hours, and we all drank until the sun popped up. Every single one of the Tornadoes was a real American Patriot. They loved us, they played for us, and they even were kind enough to let me bring out my trumpet and trombone to join the group. Special? Amen baby, they were special. Love them for the rest of my life.

I graduated from UTSA in 2015, I’m sure a much different landscape from what you experienced, but Hills and Dales was still a cool little dive off the side of the 1604 highway that my buds and I would hang out at. Reading your story and knowing that background makes me appreciate my days there even more.

    Rain dripping off the brim of my hat
    Sure is cold today
    And here I am walking down sixty-six
    Wish she hadn't done me that way
    Sleeping under a table at a roadside park
    A man could wake up dead
    But it sure seems warmer than it did
    Sleeping in my king size bed
    Is anybody going to San Antone
    Or Phoenix Arizona
    Any place is alright as long as I
    Can forget I've ever known her
    Wind whipping down the neck of my shirt
    Like I ain't got nothing on
    But I'd rather fight the wind and rain
    Than what I've been fighting at home
    Yonder comes a truck with the US mail
    People writing letters back home
    Tomorrow she'll probably want me back
    But I'll still be just as gone
    Is anybody going to San Antone
    Or Phoenix Arizona
    Any place is alright as long as I
    Can forget I've ever known her
    Any place is alright as long as I
    Forget I've ever known her

    Lyrics:
    Scooby Dooby Doo, where are you?
    We got some work to do now
    Scooby Dooby Doo, where are you?
    We need some help from you now
    Come on Scooby Doo, I see you
    Pretending you got a sliver
    But you're not fooling me, 'cause I can see
    The way you shake and shiver
    You know we got a mystery to solve
    So, Scooby Doo, be ready for your act
    Don't hold back
    And, Scooby Doo, if you come through
    You're gonna have yourself a Scooby Snack
    That's a fact
    Scooby Dooby Doo, here are you
    You're ready and you're willing
    If we can count on you, Scooby Doo
    I know we'll catch that villain

    • @StellaWaldvogel
      @StellaWaldvogel 5 років тому +5

      Agree but for the vocals.
      It's not that operatic Freddie Mercury stuff, but there was a quality to Doug's voice that I've never heard elsewhere. It's hard to explain - kind of an "I'm finally home" feel when you hear it, like getting off work and putting on shoes that don't hurt. I've felt like that since I was a little kid listening to Mendocino and Mover. It's unexplainable, but it's THERE.

    • @mcjoliaus9739
      @mcjoliaus9739 5 років тому +1

      @@StellaWaldvogel ah you feel it too. Tellin ya, this sound is more about feel and not about vocal talent and singing technique. We feel Doug's groove, same way we get to feel about our fav pair of boots. Such feelgood never leaves us. Credit to the entire band for sounding so ace instrumentally which glosses over any shortcomings in Doug's voice which is rather more like chirping when we begin to compare him to the magnanimous sound of Tom Jones or Engelbert Humperdinck whose voices order us to listen. Doug's voice is soothing, not spectacular. Aesthetically i could pick it to pieces, might tell him to have the adnoids removed as they definitely hamper his nasal passage, dampening his vocal range. I learned about parasites and how they rule other organisms only since battling somatic Morgellons (eg nano type Leishmaniasis). Many different parasites are comprised in Lyme Glyme and Slyme. Doug S could surely have benefitted from detox and it might have extended his life even. 60 is also where i am at now. I do rave on a bit. Lol.

    • @frankburton320
      @frankburton320 5 років тому +3

      Man he was awesome. Cant even compare him to Tom Jones or Engelbert. Totally different genres,both great,but i'm afraid by comparing them to Doug in my opinion takes away from Dougs wonderful talent. I know you are still complimenting him, but also looking way to deep into what is a very talented singer and musician. Apologies in advance if i'm speaking out of turn? I really do get what you mean though.

    • @colinmurphy3478
      @colinmurphy3478 2 роки тому +2

      @@mcjoliaus9739 His vocal power was seriously impressive. Problem is when you sing like that for a prolonged period of time, your voice will start to tire. Listen to any of the albums from the Mercury Masters (At the Crossroads), and he is one of the best country/rock singers ever IMO. Not a clean "technical" voice, but extremely powerful, soulful, and versatile. Perfect voice for rock that had shades of even Otis Redding.
