If you are a member of the Royal Ballet School, I am sure you can appreciate what an outstanding dancer one must be to make it to the Bolshoi company. Joy made it there. Congrats to her, and well deserved!
Flat footed balance is difficult. When I was still a young ballerina, it was much easier for me to balance en pointe than on the whole of my foot. Seems common also.
I have been following Joy for many years, but never saw this video before. She is gorgeous, whatever she does. She chose a challenging road, and she is the product of it. Hard work, excellent training, an enormous work ethic, talent , a bright mind and a well suited body...that is Joy Womack! May all success be hers.
They just saw here and said that she was not good good as Russian dancers but they haven't seen her recently. She got success later than others but very good among world class dancers.
In Russian training, hopping during turns is encouraged. Instead of students dropping their releve to get around on multiple turns, Russian students are encouraged to hop! Its weird, I know, but that's how it is! (p.s. I know this because I was trained in ballet by a Russian ballerina who went to Vaganova school)
Same over here! My teacher was a former bolshoi student and dancer, and she preferred us to hop at the very end of our turns but finishing them correctly rather than just dropping ourselves to have an “easier” landing, Russian ballet it’s the best for sure! But not made for everyone
Gorgeous strength, flexibility, agility etc. As a former Gold rated Ice Dancer, I can deeply appreciate this. I do ballet daily to stay connected to my dance. Sad to see so many know it all types here commenting. Where is your perfect, stunning, video? It's so easy to be a cyber cowboy and rip people the shreds, that is coming from your lower, bitter self. Gorgeous work, good for her!
so sad that there are so many horrible comments. i think you are an amazing dancer people that write hateful comments are jealous and insecure and only wish they could have achieved so much success as you have. hard work and talent have paid off and people that are negative on here should stop trolling these sites. i am a mom of 3 former professional dancer and you are inspiration!
I'm so happy for you Joy!!! Keep up the hard work and I know she watch her videos as well to improve and you never get tired or working everyday as all dancers do!!!
A 17-year-old student from Texas is to become the first American to graduate from the world's leading ballet school, the Bolshoi Ballet Academy. Joy Womack has lived by herself in Moscow, Russia, for three years, more than 6,000 miles away from her home in Austin, to attend the school. Joy is preparing to sit her finals and graduate in May.
the way she moves is amazing. and her feet are so beautiful. she dances with a lot of energy! and she uses her head a lot which makes it all so much better!
Oh my goodness! Joy, you're amazing!! It's amazing that you followed your dreams no matter what stood in your way, and now, you're at Bolshoi and doing such a wonderful job there!! Keep doing great things, love you!!!
I recently became a devotee. As the Guillems and McKerrows, Duponts of the world retire, it is a thrill to see the rising etoiles/principals rise. What magnificent feet, arches rarely seen in any American company. BRAVA JOY! And how brave to go to Russia for training!! Spazeba
@@renusarkar8644 Well wait a minute.. she left much later, after graduating from the school. So yes, she DID survive the training, and your reply to the comment is misleading

Joy Womack!! Thank you for sharing this special part of your journey! You are a fantastic artist. Your technique was wonderful to observe...thank you teachers!! I wish you well on your journey., AJ
she learned how to work her mucsles more wisely... I mean, evn if u dont have 180 turnout naturaly in ur bones structure u can make it happen with ur mucles. a lot of hard work!!
Such power, such precision, sultry yet joyful. Total woman empowerment. Thanks for the lift. I've heard this music once before and if it wasn't for you; I might never have heard it again. Thanks a ton!
absolutely loved the dance at the end - very talented young woman whose clearly got guts to follow her dream in another country, hats off! Try pilates it works wonders to give you a super human core. Can't believe how difficult russian ballet is, the choreography is nasty! Good luck to you and well done for all uve achieved.
Knees in front of the feet in a plie= forced turnout. You can see it right from the beginning of the video. Puts a hell of a lot of strain on the ligaments in your knees, especially the MCL when you plie. She's a gorgeous dancer nonetheless, but things like that is why dancers' careers are so short compared to others.
+Winter Mariposa Hi! I'm 15 only as well. My dream is also to become a professional ballerina, and I would love to be part of a russian balet company as well, and as much as I'm trying not to be a victim of circunstances, it's tough to accept that chances for me are really slim considering the fact that I started studying ballet only last year. That being said, ever since I've been researching about the dance world, particulary the ballet world, and I think I have pretty wel round knowledge of it so far? lol, I'm also from a very small town in the corner of the world so I get how you feel, and I would love to talk to you more and help with whatever I can! Seems like we're on the same boat, where are you from?
she's a gorgeous dancer, don't get me wrong, but i don't think I understand what makes her remarkable. (i mean, compared to other dancers at that level, I think she's pretty standard, you know?) her alignment just seems a little off and she's stiff and forced. :/ at any rate, she's better than i'll ever be so good for her... i find her a little anticlimactic
WHat i love about her is that she's not a ballet robot, she fumbles a little bit. but it's probabaly because she was nervous. She's amazing though! And she's actually good with technique, not just stupid tricks that competition kids do.
i hope people won't hate me for what im going to say. i love Joy.. she is a truly amazing dancer- she has amazing arches , perfect extensions, grace and maturity in every movement etc.. and i'm sure she worked really hard to get where she's now.. what i don't like is her body..not because she's skinny, i mean most of the bolshoi dancers are skinny.. she has changed so much.. i've been a fan of her since she joined the academy and she had a PERFECT body.. she now look as if she's anorexic
My new obsession, at first I thought Russian dance was about mean teachers amusing their dancers and keeping girls from making ballet fun, but now I see that girls want to be there and thought the Russian dancers are amazing because they have strong mind and body
When you become a soloist with the Bolshoi, you'll be allowed to comment on her technique. Until then, continue making yourself look like an idiot. Her turnout is incredible. The camera is at a slight angle, making her turnout look slightly off. Regardless, I think her accomplishments can speak for themselves. Let's just appreciate her beautiful dancing instead of criticizing what we don't understand.
keep up the good work! to be so far awat from what you know and love in a foreign country where the only language you have in common with your peers is dance is a huge risk and can be terribly lonely. follow your passion! but dont be too hard on yourself either! you are young and you have time still to grow into the dancer you are becoming . the dancer and adult you will be!!!
I feel like for the first time (that I've seen) no one can really critique her--at least over UA-cam--because she is just that awesome. Keep it up, chica!:D
Dancers who plie directly over their toes are creating tension in the front of the ankle which can eventually lead to injury. The correct way to plie in the Russian method is to plie slightly in front of the big toe. Watch any video of a Vaganova class in Russia and you will see that all of the students plie in this manner. That said, it is true that if a student plies at an angle perpendicular to the line of the foot or very significantly in front of their toes, they will injure their knees.
Such a beautiful dancer! So annoying though how people keep commenting about what they think she is doing wrong. Like really? She's training at the Bolshoi...I don't think any of the brilliant teachers at the academy would be giving her the incorrect training...
she has been given some good conditions naturally... but not typical bolshoi perfetion like zakharova or osipova... BUT... she is wonderful because the russian training is so good. Perfect example of how vaganova structure is really the best. Once she gets older, and in a company, she will begin to relax more and her work will find more flow. But russian school classes are deliberately impossible with their exercise configuation.... like the petit allegro here for example... insane!
Wow! Amazing! That's like not fair! XP But I do notice she leans back during grand battement to the front and sticks her head out to the side but she's still amazing!! I know dancers can't be perfect...
Theodore Roosevelt said that. (Or so they say) I had to look it up, because I remember the quote, but never the author. I like it as well, and it's so right on. Thanks for your comment!
She was right to go to Russia. She never would have gotten the feet or turnout in a Texas ballet school.
