I have seen this film 5 times and this final scene is always very painful.....a masterclass in acting.
Charlotte Rampling is absolutely believable as the wife who realizes that her husband has been emotionally married to a dead woman for 45 years.
There is a strange irony here, because it seems that the husband, Geoff, played by the brilliant Tom Courtenay, has finally laid the ghost of 'Katya' to rest......he has had an epiphany in the same way that Kate has.
Geoff has realized that his GREATEST love is in fact the woman he has been wed to for 45 years......that's why he cried when he gave his emotional speech.......it has quite literally taken him nearly half a century to understand that he has been married to a diamond for 45 years and that he has treated this rare gem like she is a worthless piece of junk.
Alas, Geoff's epiphany and his heartfelt tears have come a lifetime too late.......the way Kate wrenches her arm away is symbolic.....she is wrenching herself away from Geoff......he has stabbed her in the heart and the marriage is over.
    And who can blame her?

You know I agree with everything you said but I don't in fact believe that he treated her like a "worthless piece of junk". I think the splendor of the movie is that they did have a good life and he treated her well, but the part of Kate the Geoff has had all these years, (her soul her trust, her vulnerability ) Geoff did not truly give to her until the couple of days before the anniversary (or maybe not even fully then). I think that's why it hurts the most. He wasn't this cold husband, he was charming and her personal perfection, so when she comes to realize that the way she has always intuitively seen in him, isn't how he's felt all these years ,and that she may be an over glorified rebound it's devastating and a sort of betrayal. Katya was hidden in a secret place in Geoff's heart where Kate shouldv'e been.

I watched it once and I didn't realize that he grew to love her in the end. I'll watch again if I have the time. But I think it's never too late for him to love her, the problem is she probably can't tell anymore whether he's loving her for her. She's now stuck in a kind of eternal hell. Like if it were me, I'd never stop doubting the sincerity of his every single affectionate gesture from this point on.

I think she probably left him but returned to him. He has pulled himself together, and she is sensible enough to know there is no point being jealous of a dead woman. When it comes down to it, they have spent their lives together. Katya’s ghost has been laid to rest.

I am little late to join this conversation but I repeat this film time and again so I am glad to discussed it any chance I get. My take on the anniversary speech is that he didn’t have a complete understanding yet what Kate went through. Whether drunk or not, he never realized the changes of emotion Kate was having throughout the dance, his partner for 45+ years. Its not like she expects him to not love anyone before her, but not to know the depth of love and how there is a mausoleum of Katya in his heart, not knowing that for one year would be heart breaking, for 45 years would be devastating. And accepting all the shortcomings in their marriage, especially childlessness, giving up music, abandoning those major decisions without knowing the cause is so so late for her. She won’t leave him, despite everything she loves him and he is sick. But even leaving him wont bring her any piece, she has been bound to him for 45 years, she wont be able to let go. When a person questions everything from their wedding song to husband love on 45th anniversary there is no happy ending for them in this life. This film truly breaks my heart 😥

The choice of song here is perfect. The lyrics "All who love are blind" and "When your heart's on fire, you must realize, smoke gets in your eyes" seem to allude to Kate's love toward her husband. For 45 years the "smoke" caused by Kate's love for Geoff blinded her to the truth of her relationship, that she would always be second to a dead woman in her husband's eyes. Truly painful.

    • @Dinobottenbley

It’s actually the opposite. The song is about falling in love and how fixated they become with their person and then losing the love of your life. This whole ending is heart wrenching cause even the wedding song is a subconscious memorial to the life he wouldn’t have with Katya.

This movie is taking me a while to process. Right at the beginning, when Geoff says "MY Katya" I was just stunned. How refers to a giflfriend from half a century ago that way! Then throughout the movie I admired how nice and polite Kate and Geoff were to each other. I guess this is always a big deal to me because of how different my own marriage always was. So I thought, well, they've have a good marriage, a nice life together, Geoff has loved her in a way that matters. But reading the comments and thinking about it more, omg, Geoff has been everything to Kate in their marriage since they don't have children, but she never had his heart. So tragic and sad.

My mom got very upset when my dad's ex from highschool 35 years ago reached out on Facebook and she saw on Messenger that my dad replied, "I still kept your picture from years ago in my closet." I was fuming as well but I'm not the type to lash out. That's why I find it fortunate that they did not have children in this movie because even children get affected by this-more than the parents can ever realize.

@Lavender Raine She definitely was devastated. It was a stable family for all I thought when one morning I woke from my mom's sobbing screams of "liar!" at my dad and then she drove away somewhere while the neighbors wondered what the hysterics was all about. They both kept the conflict from us right until that meltdown and my mom revealed how the ex ignored her friend request since it was rather suspicious that my dad was (and still is) friends on Facebook with the ex. The ex ignored the request and my mom could still see my dad "simply having old time friendly chats", as he puts it, EXCLUSIVELY with her on Messenger. Basically chats that included "I still remember that model looking handsome guy from way back when...let's meet up...". I mean seriously? Meet up when she refused to even friend my mother? When my mom finally remarked to my dad what a B**** that ex is for such behavior, my dad said to my mom, "You don't know her, don't call her that because you're the B****". We refused to speak to our dad after that until he assured our mom that "he stopped speaking to her already". Supposedly, my parents were "starting over" after that incident but it definitely left an abandonment feeling and distrust on me. I would have told my dad and that ex out of spite what an embarrassment they both were, already approaching 60 and still desperate to capture/hold on to their prime and immaturity...that if it comes to that, that ex is pretty much just scavenging for some old "leftover" anyway...bunch of immature, thirsty old farts🙄.
I wish there's Alienation of Affection laws in California. I would definitely sue their behinds.

Thematically the song choice works brilliant for this moment, but anyone ever think it was weird they chose a song about love ending to be their wedding song? “Yet today, my love has gone away, I am without my love… tears I cannot hide” if you read into the lyricism it’s a song all about loss and love ending. So as I say, thematically it works great in the scene, but to think they chose this to be there song 45 years ago is odd.

I believe it's due to the overall strength of Brie Larson's movie. In addition to Best Picture, Room is also nominated for Best Director so it's basically a top 5 film. Brie was good but I think Charlotte is equally good if not better in this more difficult role. She was the only performer on screen in so many scenes while Brie had Jacob, the male actor who played her abuser and the rape issue which can affect the audiences much much easier than inner emotional turmoil.

I literally just finished the movie. At first at the ending i didnt know what to think, then i though maybe she was sad in the dance because she felt bad/ashamed about giving him a hard time about someone he loved in the past. But in retrospect her jerking her hand away at the end of the dance says it all. I completely feel her husband loves her through the movie, and that they have a comfortable loving life together. And at the same time i dont get why shes so distressed upon finding out about his previous love. I mean i dont get it, but i do at the same time. Truly heartbreaking. I do wish they would have talked about it more rather than skirting the issue. Esp after her seeing the photos of her and trying to understand/knowing why he is so distraught. In the end i think the message is ppl can be married for years like them, and live a good life together, but comfortable dosent equal true love.

@Lavender Raine I've read all your replies Lavender and you've really understood this film completely. I hadn't cottoned on to the fact that the reason he couldn't finish making love to his wife was because he'd previously been fantasising about his lost Katya when he kept his eyes closed. You explained it so well!! It makes you realise what subtle and thought provoking film it is.

They are too English to talk about it. That’s not how (especially older) English people work. She has realised that Katya was the love of his life. Katya was pregnant, Kate has no children. She has dogs. German shepherd dogs. Geoff reads German books and listens to German music. Even the names are similar (Kate/Katya). Over the course of that week, Geoff becomes lost in memories and grief for his true love, and Kate realises he has settled for second best. “They asked me how I knew my true love is true”

I watched this film a couple of years ago and didnt enjoy it at all. I completely missed what was going on with Charlotte Rampling and the lyrics of the song. Tonight I got the plot and found it a tremendous film with super performances from the lead actors. It's very clever indeed!
I've noticed a couple of people commenting on this film and they reckon Tom Courtney had killed Katya?? Did anybody else feel that had happened? I didn't get that vibe at all. A really good film!

I think the saddest part is that woman was dead, and she could never compared with a departed woman. She will always be young and beauty and perfect in his memory. That is extremely unfair.

Yes her acting is incredible, but why is no one focusing on the PLOT. Why was it such a big deal that her husband had a love that was lost before her? And why is it so heavy on her now after 45 years? I don't get it. This is not a unique situation. Unfortunately many of us would go through something similar. It's called baggage. Was she that pretentious as to think her husband's world always revolved around her? That he was incapable of love before meeting her? If so, how did his character suffer 45 years with someone like that?? Yes it was like watching a person fall apart. But the wife's character seemed so pompous and credulous, that I didn't feel an ounce of emotion for her.

@Sara Wilkinson Thank you for that wonderful explanation. I understand the nuances of how she comes to the realization. I'm just surprised at how she did not do so sooner. Like their wedding song...I mean COME ON. But then again I can understand that perhaps her love for him made her 'blind' to such inclinations. Not to mention, even I didn't pick up on some of the things you had mentioned. Though, in my defense, I was't married to him, lol.

@@samh5733 "smoke gets in your eyes" applies to Kate too. Who among us has not ignored warning signs or been naively optimistic? 45 years is a long time but it's a very human issue.
The last girl I dated was the most asocial person I've ever met. 7 months in, she told me "I don't know why anyone would want to date me." Near the end of the four-year relationship, she revealed that she was done before the end of the first year. Perhaps that quote was her way of saying she wanted out, I took it as self-deprecation. She wasn't strong enough to end it, and I was too hopeful. (Optimist and pessimist don't mix, folks. It's a drain. Don't be a savior.)
Humans can be too compassionate or optimistic for their own good.
