    I just repaired my seventeen year old Denon UD-M31 by following your instructions, it’d read some CD’s intermittently, I turned the all important screw anticlockwise as it wouldn’t go clockwise, turned it about just under half a turn or a gnats tit, anyway it’s even reading slightly scratched CD’s like my original Shaved Fish by John Lennon. I cannot thank you enough especially for making Covid-19 lockdown more bearable 👍

    Before going to this extent, I’d recommend simply removing, cleaning and resetting to connection cable. 9 times out of 10 that’s the real issue and adjusting the settings may not be necessary. It’s very possible that was the issue here as well and the adjustments weren’t necessary.

    I have used this repair method myself, but it gives a good effect, usually for a short time. This involves contamination of the optics, which are not easily accessible, only the lens you cleaned can be accessed, and the increased laser power supply current is also a factor that shortens its life. A proper repair involves replacing at least the mechanism with a set of optics (they are not always easily available on the market - it depends on the model).

    Good video showing a possible problem scenario.
    Trimmer pots become a bit oxidised and high resistance over time. Therefore the setting is no-longer in spec. Moving them slightly might clean their contacts a little which in this case helped but you really have no idea if the calibration is correct or not. As pointed out, it may go over spec and burn out the laser. If the high resistance is elsewhere, like the tabs that hold the contact wiper in place. Doing this will not fix that. My suggestion is to get some contact clearer lube such as Deoxit spray. Do not spray this directly on the trimmer But spray a little into a small container. Then dab the smallest amount possible onto the trimmer contact points and dab these areas with the corner of a tissue to soak up excess conditioner. Wait for it the dry before powering up and testing again. This should soak through the oxides and regain continuity through the trimmer without moving it at all. If this is the least invasive approach and you can always try moving it if it doesn't work. The brand I suggest is expensive but is pretty safe on most components (some aren't). It is a product that can be used to clean and lube scratchy potentiometers such as volume controls as well as faders and faulty switches.

    • @marcusfred4480
      @marcusfred4480 5 років тому +4

      Yes. That's what I have thought too. They go high by themselves at the point the contact touches the carbon track. By moving it slightly yes you are adjusting the factory setting, but prob more freeing the wiper on the trimmer and making proper contact again.

    • @peartfaldo

      Yep. My 11 year old anthem blu ray stopped reading some blu rays---everything else played fine---i turned the pot a teeny bit clockwise and then back to where it started. Now it works like new. reads discs quicker too. so, i think just moving the pot broke some oxidation .

    In older disc players that have ceased to play or even load a disc, the fault my not be a weak laser, but rather oxidized connections and contacts: as someone else here suggested, remove the ribbon cable and use a little contact cleaner on it, then re-insert it and pull it out a few times to clean off any oxidation. VERY gingerly, as these thin flat cables are uber delicate. Same goes for the diode current pots: mark the original position of the wiper, spray a little contact cleaner (a very little bit goes a long way) on the carbon trace, and turn the wiper back and forth thru its full range a number of times, setting it back to the mark. If this does not fully restore function, then try turning up the laser current a little, maybe 5 minutes (clockwise) as viewed on a clock face, that is, 1/12 of a circle. These procedures have worked for me on several players as old as 35 years. The unit Mr. Electronicle worked on in the video has the diode current pots in a relatively convenient location for adjustment. Most of the players I have worked on have the pots on the underside of the laser board, which is a REAL pain in the arse , necessitating removal of the laser unit.

    Thanks for the insight. I got the no disc issue resolved by 1)gently wiping the laser with denatured alcohol. Then 2) Bringing out the cable and cleaning it with a soft eraser. The type kids use for their pencil works. Erasers do great cleaning jobs on signal cables. Cleaned and reset the cable. That just did it.

  • @janinapalmer8368
    @janinapalmer8368 2 роки тому +9

    It's not always the laser diode going soft ... it's often the track on the tiny potentiometer that gets dirty and grimy so making the contact with the wiper unreliable .. I personally would mark the position with a very fine point... and then spray they track with electronic cleaning solvent and move the wiper quickly from one end of the circular track to the other.... this beds the wiper in and reduces contact resistance...

    Sometimes simply removing and putting back the ribbon cable fixes the issue. Oxidation may take place over a period of time. Also, the surface of the pots could get some oxide over time, and thus simply cracking their position can fix issues. Most likely the player will work for a number of years to come simply with what this guy did to fix it.
    Going back some years ago (late 1980's through to the mid 1990's) I used to service CD players at a contract job for warranty service when these players were expensive. I was servicing units from consumer level to professional level types. I was doing the tracking adjustments using test CD disks, a scope, and referencing to the service manual. I was servicing Sony, Panasonic, and some other types. I was also servicing VCRs and TV set. We were changing motors, belts, the laser unit assy., circuit boards, and etc. I used a laser meter to verify the laser strength. The factory level service manual normally has the emission specs for the laser for testing it.
    Especially with the early generation players the lasers were failing. The newer replacements were usually improved and would last a lot longer. Servicing these units out of warranty was fairly expensive. With consumer type units it did not pay to service them. Better to buy a new one.
    When servicing any CD player, never look directly in to the laser if you remove the shield! The beam is invisible to the eyes, and looking in to the laser can and most likely will lead to permanent eye damage. With many models of players the laser is turned on with the power applied, and it stays on. If the CD/DVD player is a writer, while in the play mode the laser works at a low power mode. In the burning (write) mode it is at a fair amount of power. I cannot remember off hand the power levels, but even in the play mode the laser is dangerous for eye sight. The reflected beam can also be dangerous!
    If you have a laser tester you can see if the laser is alive during standby mode if you have the shield removed, and put the sensor over the laser lens.

      always pays to take a pic if you don't know what you're doing. Otherwise, when you grab the cable and let it go...ususally it is "trained" by age to go near where it was plugged in when you drop it. It will often even tell you which way to plug it in the same sense. Look around where it drops for a pin terminal/receptical that is as wide. I can't tell from your description if it is a flat cable or a ribbon cable with a molex end, or a ribbon cable with a pin header end. Any way you slice it though, there is only one place it will fit and has the same number of pins.

      I have a vintage Samsung Progressive Scan DVD-P231 DVD player, and the unit did not have any of the trimmer pots that was shown in your video. Anyways, all that I did yesterday was to get my small extra fine relay contact file, and shine up some of the ribbon cable contactors that were coming out of the DVD assembly. In addition, I had previously checked some of the larger capacitors in the power supply and checked a couple of capacitors on the logic board. Well, they all tested out okay. Actually, it could very well be that the unit simply has a weak DVD laser diode, but it looks like there isn't much that I can do about that. Yes, I had previously lubricated the spindle motor, and cleaned the laser diodes. The Samsung Progressive Scan DVD-P231 did play a full movie afterwards without interruptions, but I'm crossing my fingers as I did have regular problems with the video freezing at times. Thanks for the video!

    This trick fixed my old school Alpine 6-disc changer, model CHA-S604. Bought the changer brand new way back '97 and lately I thought I would toss it to the bin. Cleaning the pickup lens the previous years was fine but it was just lately that it fails to read any discs anymore :( I measured the resistance on the VR POT before turning from 650 ohms down to 640 ohms. Merely a 10 ohms reduction. Now the unit plays like a champ! Thanks a ton!

    Just a little tip- listen to the servo head drive, over adjusting will cause noise from instability in servo gain amps. Backing off to reduce noise will extend life by reducing temperature in the laser head. Every 10 degrees (C) rise halves the laser life.

    I have watched several of your videos. I have RV stereo entertainment system. Everything works except the CD/DVD drive freezes/skips on all discs( never tried regular CD) after cleaning checking belts still no luck. I finally just pulled out that component and have DVD player hooked into system with AV cords. I have the drive out in multiple pieces. This does not have a tray that opens an closes. Do you have any suggestions? I would like to just replace the whole DVD component ( that drive/box is easy enough to remove from the stereo) I have very basic Jansen AW60 not looking to upgrade. in my experience this fix works for older electronics . 90%of disc players i repair its the spindle motor that goes bad not spinning at the right rpm replacing it does the trick if the pot adjustment doesnt work. this is due to the fact that everything now is made cheap and designed to fail

    • @Baerchenization

      I haven't done this before, but I wanted a nice player cheap, so got a player that does not read and also a new lens, thinking that is what it takes, but now I am not so sure anymore :) Hope it's not the motor now ! This is an ONIX SACD 15 I got for 150 Euros, hopefully not an expensive paper weight.

      @@Baerchenization well you already bought the player and lens . I suggest you go through with your original plan and see if that does the trick. You might get lucky. If not at least you know what the problem is not.

    • @Baerchenization
      @Baerchenization 5 років тому

      @@flashgordon1695 Well, there is news :) I found a video where someone replaces the same laser unit; turns out that you have to de-solder a little blob first and I don't have the means to do that. So I found a guy who fixes them professionally and he said that replacing the laser only on this unit is a hatchet job and I would need the entire assembly. So I got that and it was even cheaper than the laser only. Anyway, swapping the laser assembly did not do the trick and he had no immediate solution. Now, I have paid 150 for the unit, 2x ca 40 for the lasers, 50 shipping for the CD player and the repair guy has upped his estimate to 200... and I already drove out there three times, which is ca 25 miles from where I live... not going so great, eh :) Oh, and the seller forgot to send the remote control and of course never bothered again. He is in France, I am not, so that it that.

  • @jairosoft

    Wow! You're a genuine genie genius. I have a laptop that is being hit or miss about reading disks, so I am having a hit or miss time in installing the operating system. I have to use the CD/DVD way because its USBs aren't for bootable disks. It's an old laptop. It was working fine at the beginning and that's how I installed an operating system on it, but I want to add another operating system because I haven't gotten the first operating system to access WiFi; it is a Linux operating system and I'm not well versed on it. So I am going to try a partition with good old Windows 10, but the CD/DVD device is being difficult. I was thinking of buying one like it on eBay for only 7 dollars, but I decided to try cleaning it and wiggling it a little and it came back to work but it ran halfway for the WIndows 10 installation disk, it stopped spinning leaving the Windows logo, and it had not done loading all the installation utility to RAM. So, that's what motivated me to look around for ideas on how to fix these mechanisms.

    Thanks for the video. This is exactly my problem but I can't locate my trimmer pots nor find any reference to them in the service manual. Its a Marantz CD57 (IE Phillips era), the tray is still marked Phillips but the ribbon cable comes in at the side, not the rear. In service mode P01 I get Err 02 which is a focus error but I'm not seeing any light at all from the laser - would you expect to see something? Are there always trimmer pots? will they be hidden somewhere the tray or could they be on a board? Thanks.

    Update: Nah, didn't work, it's already 20yrs old, didn't want to stress the laser more, it was 8.21 Khz , move it up to 9+ something, then turned back to 8.22 Khz (the variable resistor is very tiny) :P

    To save chancing getting the presets out of alinment,perhaps try Servicesol (or the like) electric contact , electric clening fluid! Cover all parts with toilet paper to stop the spray from going anywere except for the presets and give a couple of short bursts ( keep the spray can as vertical as possible ) level for 10 minutes to dry and it should work fine! If it still doesn't work then chances are the fault lies elsewhere! You could try looking for other pre sets and spray them! If that doesn't work, then disconnect all the ribon cables (as in the video ) and spray the sockets were they came from !

      might not be adjustable on your model. You can check any other boards that are in the area (ie connected via the ribbon cable that goes to the pickup assembly)..but dont just turn things without knowing for sure what they do. In this case a service manual comes in handy.
