G'day Tim, your spot on about not selling the old girl, all new 4wd theses days are garbage built weak. My GQ patrol that I've had from new in 1989 is 6,300km from reaching 900,000km..
Far out mate, you have a GQ from new thats amazing mate and it's still going well with those high Ks. Yeah, i couldn't sell it. New 4wd's these days aren'y much chop i reckon. I will stay with my GU for sure. Thanks for your reply. Cheers Tim
Your GU is awesome Tim very well set up, I've spent a lot coin keeping this GQ going, the TD42 engine has been rebuild and running gear also and cutting out rust in certain areas, Car has always been in garage..cheers Tim

G'day Nathan, Thats going back a few years mate from the 4WD Action days. Around 2010 i started on the dvd trips. Thanks heaps mate for your feedback. Cheers Tim
Saw the wrap around awning with someone else and they had nothing but trouble with water pooling in wet weather. It was painful just watching! So good move!
Gday Kathy Yeah, I’ve never been a fan of the wrap around awnings, and I never will for the reasons I mention in the video. Thanks for your feedback Cheers Tim
Great work in your weight reduction efforts.👍 It's refreshing to see someone bucking the trend and doing it (reducing weight). It seems most 4WDers nowadays want to bring everything from home. Not just the kitchen sink but also luxuries like real coffee makers etc. I too am very mindful of adding unnecessary weight on my 80 Series. But I'm embarrassed to admit, that your efforts puts mine to shame by a huge margin. And while my 80 isn't a single owner vehicle like yours (I'm the 2nd owner), it has been in the family since new. It was my eldest sister's family car (bought new in 1996), and I bought it off them in 2018. I too don't see myself selling it anytime soon. ❤
Nice run through, Tim. Come to the UAE and enjoy some petrol 4.8 Y61s in the dunes :) Fully stock we can scream around all over the place, you’d love it. I’m no expert dune driver, but have been amazed what mine can do when following someone who is. Hoping to experience some low and slow in your part of the world one day.
Gday mate, That would be wicked fun mate. I’ve watched a number of sand dune driving in your part of the world. Some of the drivers don’t muck around. Heaps of fun. Thanks a lot for your reply and dropping in from the UAE. Cheers Tim
I would highly recommend replacing the Fuel Injector Pump at 40O,000 KMS. Don’t know the differences between a CRD and DI Pumps or how old mine was. but In January this Year, mine (Without Warning) decided it wanted a 21st Birthday Present (Built January, Compliance February, Delivered 8 March 2002) so it detonated its Injector Pump at 427,000 KMS.
Good onya Tim. A genuine single-owner GU Patrol. You've built yourself a very capable off-road tourer there. Your "Datsun Patrol" bonnet protector gave me a chuckle. Classic. 🤣
Gday Tim. I did the same trick to my Cruiser last year. Between the drawers and-going to my old alloy front bar and using lithium batteries, I saved more than two hundred kilos. Important for towing a van these days plus a decent reduction in diesel costs. Mine is about to see 400k as well. Amazing what clean oil will do. Good on ya. 😊
G'day Mick, Thats great you have thought a lot about weight with the gear you have added to your 80 series. More people should also look at weight when adding gear to their 4WD's. Mate, good clean oil works a treat, i have changed mine every 5000ks. My ZD30 loves it Lol Thanks heaps mate for your reply. Cheers Tim

Been a follower for quite a few years now, never reached out to let you know that I love the videos mate! Really do! Good one Tim, always great to see the progression of a vehicle and how it helps one get out and enjoy our great outdoors 👍👍. Good to see you’ve had it since new too mate, bit like my old man’s GU ute, factory 4.2 intercooled turbo, owned since it rolled out of the Nissan showroom … he’s looked after it since day one 😉👍

@@timbates4wdadventures Thanks Tim still considering which way to go the Duel Mass Flywheels are considered a wear item and can fail at low km like ours at 90K which is a real pain as they are also very expensive. Yeah nice. I've taken my 270 degree awning off as I never use it but we have taken one of those fold down Gazebo things on our last couple of camps and it's been fantastic imo. Setup the kitchen under it and near the fire so if it rains we can just sit underneath it as well. You can get sidewalls for them and they're light and easily packed. Also means that we don't have to pack it up every time we go for a drive. We do tend to get to a place and stay there though. I will sell my awning at some point and may put on a much smaller one but maybe not. Reversing cameras are the nuts imo even on cars. One thing I love with mine is that I can have my phone connected through the entertainment system so I can run Google maps and use offline maps when there's no service. It isn't perfect but it's great for most things I have found and even fantastic around town as I can get lost in my own bathroom. It's good to see a very capable vehicle that does exactly what you want/need it to do and isn't a quarter million dollar starship as well. Thanks for the video as always mate.
The weight thing is important Tim. I suspect that very few of us know what our vehicles weigh when accessorised and loaded for a trip. This impacts fuel consumption, braking, mechanical wear and tear and comfort. Often the GVM limits are exceeded because we don''t know! Have you checked yours on a weighbridge...it would be a shame to discard the pie warmer!
Thats for sure mate, not ,many would know what there 4WD weighs, its worth going over a weigh bridge to find out and be shocked when you see the number. Yes mate, mine is just under GVM of 3030 when on a trip. But i have taken a lot out of my Patrol the get the weight down. Thanks heaps mate for your reply. Cheers Tim
I have a simple vehicle (not full of electronic trickery) and simple lightweight camping set up also. Definitely the way to go. Not thinking of selling either.

Yeah, i think far to many people get caught up in the the marketing of new gear and they think they need it to go camping. You sure dont, thats for sure. Thanks mate. Cheers Tim

Great vid, when’s the next trip. 🤔🤔🍻
Great video Tim. With the rear camera being significantly off centre, do you find it gives a false readout on distance to obstacles either side of the vehicle?
G'day mate,
Not at all, i find the angle it shows is great.
Very handy things.

G'day Andrew,
Yeah mate, that pie oven switch is so handy, great spot to get the oven going on the go.
Exactly, why would you sell one of the best off road rigs. The Patrols are wicked.
Thanks mate for your reply.

Do the door seals and you will regret no rock sliders. They dont have to be heavy too. Single tube will do it.
Rock sliders have been gone for about 3 years now, i haven't missed they yet.
Would never put them back on.
Thanks for your reply mate.
