So funny - I just did this yesterday. I had 17 apples that needed to be used, so just decided on a whim to make applesauce. Hubby loves the stuff, but he wants his light in color, so I did it on the stove (didn't take long). My 17 apples made exactly what you ended up with - 2 pints and a 1/2 pint! LOL I agree 100% about the steam canner being a game changer. I haven't used my water bath canner since I got it! SO much easier to use. I really love it so much. One thing you're supposed to change using a steam canner is that you don't take the lid off and let the jars sit - you turn the heat off and let them sit for 5 minutes with the lid still on and then take it off and move them to a towel. You don't have to worry about the steam burning you at all that way. I'm not sure if that's the only purpose, but that is in the instructions for my FRUITSAVER steam canner.
Love this! I have 2 very old steam canners. Neither have a gauge. One is Navy with a white speckle, like most cold water bath canners, and an aluminum one. The aluminum one doesn’t have any type of handle, but it does have a vent hole on the side. They were my 93 year old mother-in -law’s. My son gave me a large tote full of pears and I was looking for a good recipe to can it up for my 7 month old grandson. Long story even more tedious (if you can imagine)… I ran across your video, and I remembered those old canners so I dug them out. I loaded them the same way you did, then I waited for the steam to come out the vent. When it steadily maintained about an 8 inch steam trail I timed it for 20 minutes, then turned off the heat and waited for 10 minutes before opening up the canners. They look beautiful and I feel confident that they are safe. 🎉 I enjoyed your video and when I make applesauce next week, I’m going to use the crockpot! Thanks!🌸🌼
You made my day! I love that you are going to try it with your kids (that's exactly why I do the videos...to help others). Let me know what you think, and how it turned out.
Hi! Thank you for this lesson. I have never heard of a "steam canner". My husband does the pressure canner out in our shop but I usually do water bath canning in my kitchen with a makeshift water bath canner and rack at the bottom, but mostly it is small batch. I probably should go back and listen again to what you said (and I will) but what can be put into the steam canner? I love this method. I have just subscribed to your channel. I am in NC and it looks you are somewhere in NC too. Have a wonderful day!
The steam canner will revolutionize your canning! Anything that you WB now, can be steam canned, and it's perfect for smaller batches. This is the one I have, and I love it. amzn.to/3pwYhEo We are in the Raleigh area. :)

I’ve watched a bunch of apple sauce videos. I respect your knife skills and choice of knife.
Canning applesauce is going to be so much fun. Thank you for sharing this method with us.
I did this with 4 crock pots at one time. Loved it!! ( I have a large family) We use quarts 😊
Thank you very much for the jar information!!! That was exactly what I needed!!!
So making today.... You made it look so easy and I just purchased a steam canner so I'm on a roll...LOL
Whoop Whoop! Congratulations, you are going to love it!
Thank you SO much for this video! You explained everything and gave me the confidence to do this today with my kids!

Do you add cinnamon? If so what part in the process?
I’m not sure if I did, but it sounds like something I would prefer to do. 😀 You can really add it at any point in time.
@@TheHappyHomestead I added cinnamon after the apples are turned into sauce
skins on?
Sometimes, I do.
Can you water bath this recipe if you don’t have a steam canner? Thanks!
